Hopefully it's ok I revive my old topic.  I bought a new KTM 500 EXC two years ago and I've put over 4000km on it.  I love the bike but I still have that envy for the FX.  I don't enjoy the EXC above 80km/h so I'm curious how two years on, if any more of you have had a chance to try both the EXC and FX and what your thoughts are.  Off-road, the EXC is extremely capable but I'm not the jumping type so I'm guessing the FX would be plenty capable.  I love the hill climbs, cresting over big bumps with massive wheelies, rooster tails and just wandering the trails.

How reliable have your newer FX's have been, especially in off-roading?

I'm very curious to hear about the 6.5 and how it compares.  I'm guessing 2015 models will be discounted and with the terrible Canadian dollar, there would probably be a considerable gap in price.  The FX went up 1800$ in 2016 so probably 2500$+ difference OTD.

I definitely like what I'm hearing about the Zero FX.  Is the power decrease that noticeable when you're battery's SOC goes below 50%?  I currently drive a DRZ400SM, does it become slower than that?  Can you not do wheelies anymore?

I rode a KTM 690 Enduro R and one of the big issues I had was the vibration, especially when going over 50MPH.  How is the FX in terms of vibration and overall wheel balance.  Is it smooth as butter and not bouncy when going that speed (or any speed)?

Thanks for the information!  One of the main purposes of the Zero FX (or KTM) would be off-road use.  I'm not talking motocross-style jumping and big drops and such.  It'd be more exploration and travelling in the woods on trails.  Is the frame not sturdy enough for major off-roading?

Well, I finally provided TD with a VIN and they've decided to increase the cc's to 750 and the price to 1450.  That's a little discouraging.

Anyone here have insurance in Ontario?  I got a quote from TD insurance for a 2015 Zero FX and somehow, it's rated as a 650cc according to underwriting's best guess.  650 seems pretty high and rhis shoots up my cost to 1250$ a year.  Where do you guys go for insurance?

Are you using the wrap around handguard made of steel that goes inside the handlebar end?  That's what I have on my DRZ and they've been very sturdy, especially when you drop the bike.

What sort of range are you guys getting on average?  I'm mostly looking at fire roads, a little bit of highway (20-30km tops) and then the usual in-town and off-roading.  The most I go on my DRZ is usually 100km but those are rare, usually more around 60km.

Just out of curiosity, in terms of pure enjoyment/smiles, how does the Zero FX compare to a wheelie machine like a KTM 500 or 690 Enduro?  Given the choice, which would you pick?

I'm assuming it's very low, but how is the vibration for road use or anything higher speed (60mph)?  That's one of my big issue with the high strung 1-cylinder.  Never tried the 500 but I found the 2015 690 very vibey in the handlebars.

I run about 4000-5000km a year so it's not that much use, we have pretty long winters in Northern Ontario.   Never heard about those service checks though.  I'm very curious to see what the 2016 FXs will be like.

These are some interesting stories.  It seems like if you get a lemon, the manufacturer support is hit or miss.  I couldn't imagine having to do multiple 8 hours drives to go get my bike fixed once...  Maybe I need to coax one of my local dealers to pickup Zero haha
