Tech Help / Battery life
« on: December 04, 2017, 05:29:18 AM »
Got the latest firmware update for my 2015 DS about 2 months or so ago. Pretty soon after that my onboard charger went out. I am not using an external charger to charge up the bike overnight.

The problem that I have been having since the update is that the battery goes through the first 7% really quickly. Like after only 3 miles mostly on city riding. Used to get much farther before getting that low.

Also, I pretty consistently lose about 8% instantly in the mid-range area. I will look down and see that I am at 49% and then look back down after only a few seconds and the battery will be at 40%. This is at highway speeds 60-70mph.

Before I got the firmware update and my onboard charger went out this would never happen.

Has anyone else ran into this issue or have any ideas on what this may be? Are the batteries become unbalance? Is BMS malfunctioning?

Since I can't charge at work the batteries have to last for my total commute. Should be no problem with the range the bike has but when I lose 7% real quick at the beginning and randomly lose 8-10% around the middle it makes me worried I won't make it one of these days. Especially if it gets any worse.

I used an electronics component cleaner spray. I just sprayed the plugs and let them dry.

Tech Help / Hot power cable when charging
« on: April 10, 2017, 10:46:42 AM »
When I charge my 2015 DS there is a constant charging sound. Tonight I came out to the garage and that sound was starting and stopping.

I checked the cable that was plugged into the bike and it was hot. I also checked the connection of this cable to the extension cable and it was hot as well.

The extension cable is to spec of what is called for when charging the bike and I have been doing this over 2 years since I bought the bike.

Any ideas what may be going wrong? Is the bike going to explode?

General Discussion / The most pleasant encounter
« on: April 07, 2017, 10:05:04 AM »
So I am riding to work. Seemed like any other day.

Going north on the 405 in west LA. Traffic is bumper to bumper like usual and I am splitting between the passing lane and carpool lane.

I pass by a bike waiting to get in from the passing lane. I look back and like usual the bike has gotten in and is catching up to me. I ride pretty mellow so this is no surprise.

I get over so my fellow motorcycle rider can pass. Then it happens.

The bike slows down when beside me and I look over. It is a black ZERO S! I look up and...

The rider is a woman! How awesome! It is rare that I see another Zero but a woman riding a Zero? That was like seeing a unicorn!

She smiled and waved. I waved back. Maybe it was the situation but her face was so pretty and she looked so happy to see another Zero rider as well.

And then she rode on. I could not get the smile off my face.

I already think women that ride are awesome. But riding a Zero? Over the top.

Maybe I will get the opportunity to see her again.

Or perhaps it was just my imagination running wild.

Parts, Mods And Hacks / 2015 DS Mirror specs
« on: January 28, 2017, 12:09:59 PM »
Looking to replace mirrors. What are the thread specs that I need to match. 10mm? Any suggestions on what would be good mirrors to get? I do a lot of lane splitting.

Buy Sell Trade / Re: Quick Charger
« on: August 28, 2016, 11:01:33 PM »
My wife almost killed me when she found out I was selling it for $100. Have to revise price to $300.

Had no idea what it sells for $600 new since I got it as a gift.

Sorry if I got anyone too excited about it. $300 is still a great price.

Have not even looked at it but I have attached a picture of the box.

General Discussion / Crazy Lane Splitters
« on: May 23, 2016, 11:01:10 AM »
I ride my Zero DS about 25 miles each way to work.

My route involves taking the 405 freeway for about 20 of those miles.

The 405 freeway is one of the busiest freeways in the world. Especially in West Los Angeles where I ride.

Now, I don't have a beef with lane splitting. I actually lane split when traffic gets under 35-40 mph.

I have a beef with these bikers that are going way to fast when they are splitting. Guys who split when traffic is going 70mph! Riders that split going 50 when traffic is going 15. Just plain stupid and rolling the dice. Eventually, a car is going to change lanes and there is no chance to avoid a wreck. In these cases I can't blame anyone but the motorcyclist. Bike appears from nowhere at those speeds.

Fortunately in California it is actually legal to split but these few idiots are going to make lawmakers think twice about this.

In the last week I rode by 3 different wrecks that involved a motorcyclist that was splitting. A wreck between the carpool lane and the passing lane results in tens of thousands of people sitting on the freeway for an extra half hour or more just to go 3 or 4 miles.

Eventually people are going to get fed up with this. I actually do not usually see any other electric bikes. Most of the offenders are on sport bikes but sometimes I actually see big cruisers doing it too. Nuts.

Not sure if anyone else here has seen this going on or has any thoughts on this. Sorry about the long post. I hate to see fellow bikers go down and do not want to lose the privilege of lane splitting because of a few yahoos getting their jollies out on a packed freeway.

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Re: 2016 Zero motorcycle lineup poll

Not sure what organization is buying Zero motorcycles in "fleets" other than maybe Police departments. And they have their own special model I believe.

Zero does not sell a lot of bikes. It is still a very niche market that I would assume is dominated by customers that are mostly into performance regardless of cost. However, I think as the entry level bikes like the S and DS come down a bit more in price, the commuter market will start to heat up. Anecdotally, I continually hear interest from people including ICE bike riders but the entry price stops them cold.

At this point, it takes about 4 years to break even on cost between a S/DS and a Ninja 300. That is a long time. If that can get down to a couple years or less there will be a lot more people buying the entry level Zero bikes.

The largest group of potential customers untapped by the motorcycle industry in the U.S. are commuters. Many people don't commute on motorcycles because of having to shift gears and the maintenance hassles and costs. Electric bikes solve these issues but are still too expensive to make inroads into this huge demographic.

The 2016 DSR is appealing to me since I prefer the dual sport form factor.

For large purchases I can obsess over the details and research until it drives my wife nuts.

I started looking at electric motorcycles in 2012. Narrowed it down to Zero in 2014. Just was not quite there in terms of power/range/components. When the 2015 was announced it was just enough to get me to pull the trigger. I purchased the small battery (9.4?) DS. The plus with that one is that it accelerates a little faster than the big battery one.

I commute 25 miles each way mostly on the freeway. I am in California so I can lane split legally. A good portion of the commute involves lane splitting since I am on one of the most congested freeway sections in the world. For this purpose I chose the DS because it sits a bit higher. Plus I like the option that if I do go out on a weekend that I can take it down a dirt road if I want.

I have had the bike since January and have ridden about 6000 miles. I keep it plugged in whenever it is not in use. I have only taken it down below 20% battery level a handful of times. The original Pirelli tires still have a good 2000 miles left on them. I just bought replacements for the front and back (Trail Attack 2s). Other than that, no maintenance whatsoever. Zero. Nada. No gas. No oil. So basically in 9 months and 6000 miles $0 in maintenance costs. I have not seen a noticeable increase in my electric bill either. Of course half the charging is done at work. The other benefit of no gas, no oil and belt drive is the bike stays clean and so does the garage.

Some have said that the DS is slow. For a bike, yea. A little. But it is fast enough in traffic that there is no problem getting ahead of the pack of cars. And when you are going 35 and want to get to 70, it gets there in a real hurry.

I would recommend the DS to anyone doing a commute as the main use. It is super smooth. Very little vibration and great response from the throttle at all speeds up to 90 MPH and capable even on crappy roads.

I absolutely love the bike. It has so far exceeded my expectations and puts a big smile on my face whenever I ride it.

Anyways. That is my 2016 preference and testimonial for those that are contemplating a purchase.

I guess this why I got an email from Zero today offering me a free quick charge accessory or a Zero jacket and gloves. LOL.

I really don't mind and that is a good gesture on their part. I knew that the technology is evolving and did not buy the bike thinking of resale value.

I have put almost 3000 miles on it with no problems whatsoever. Love the bike. Completely satisfied.

I stand corrected Ted. Must have been looking at one of the V6 specs. :-[

I can sense a very slight delay on my DS from a stop (0-10MPH?) but after that it ratchets up quickly. I knew that I was obviously not going to get the fastest bike in the Zero lineup so I did not expect that much. In sport mode I am getting zero to sixty in around 5 seconds no problem. That is faster than a Mustang GT so I don't think it is particularly slow.
