One item that will probably be in the 2018 models is the new 32 Ah Farasis cells. Same weight and footprint as the current 29 Ah cells with a 10% increase in energy density, so a 10% increase in range.

Does anyone know what the energy density is for the current cell? I kept searching and Doctorbass had shared a fact sheet on the older 25 ah cell. 185 whr/kg so if the current cell maintains the same weight it would be 215 whr/kg.

It seems energy density has become trade secrets. It wasn't that way just 10 years ago when I was rolling my own.

After a lot of research I found someone that weighed the new 2170 cell Tesla is producing at their Gigafactory and it is 66 grams. Since it is rated at 5,750 ma, I finally know its energy density is a very good 322.2 wh/kg. To put that into a Zero perspective, I believe the (4) packs that make up the 13 kwh pack weigh about 168 lb, correct me if I'm wrong. Using the Tesla's new 2170 cell the pack would weigh 89 lb. So you could have a 25 kwh pack for the same weight as the Farasis cell pack currently used. How nice would it be to have 200 mile range at 70 mph?

Zero, unlike others in the automotive marketplace is sure tight lipped about their next year models. Last year it wasn't till November before press releases. I wonder if they do this to help their dealer network clear out current year models with discounts? The option of CHAdeMO charging is what I'm waiting for and will buy from the first manufacture that provides that on their electric motorcycle. Lightning LS218 has it but hasn't started production to my knowledge. That is how important CHAdeMO charging is for me, I'd buy a Lightning at $38K before a Zero at $18K that doesn't have it. I would buy a Zero today if they had CHAdeMO. My fingers are crossed they will offer it on their 2018 lineup.

Thanks Doc, very informative. On one of my old projects I was using the Winston LiFePO4 100 amp cells when they started to come down in price (about 10~12 years ago). Prior to this I always used Odyssey AGM lead bricks. You mention that Zero's pack sag is 4 volts under 550 amp load, which at 116 pack voltage isn't bad. With the AGMs I saw almost that much at the 12 volt single battery level. At 96 volts if memory serves me, about a 25 volt sag. We have come a long way in 10 years. My Winston cells gave me my first experience of very low sag under high current. I still have those cells and they are still performing fine.

Staying within the design parameters of the components used, my guess is based on the 29 Ahr cells being capable of 5C discharge like the old 20 Ahr cells.

Controller at 102 volts and 775 amps would be good for 106 hp. After being schooled by Doctorbass I learned that 550 amps is the input rating and after subtracting efficiency turns out 70 hp is about it, nothing left on the table.

Battery at 13 kwhr and 5C discharge would be good for 87 hp.

Battery at 16.3 kwhr would be 109 hp, controller could handle this small % increase.

Since output is limited to 70 hp, Zero is being very conservative, leaving 39 hp on the table.

Sure, CHAdeMo would be nice. An agreement with Tesla to use their Superchargers would be a hundred times nicer. But if you're going to get out of your EV dead zone soon, you might want to mimic Electric Terry. I think he wrote that he has 200 miles of range at freeway speeds, but don't quote me on that. He regularly does 400 mile trips.

Now were talking. At what speed is he getting 200 miles? How much and where did he put the added batteries? I still want to use CHAdeMO so Zero needs to up their voltage or I'll wait for production of the Lightning 218 with their 20 kwhr battery at 380 volts. $47K is a bit of coin for any motorcycle purchase but you do get the fastest production motorcycle made (gas or electric), CHAdeMO charging and enough range to make it to that first CHAdeMO station on a west bound trip with only needing to reduce speed to 60 mph on that leg.

There is a big difference on long trips between a maxed out level 2 charging at 1 hour and 20 minutes vs 20 minutes on a good CHAdeMO, don't you think?
Electric Terry and others use multiple outlets to slash charging times. So if your charging park has two or three unused level 2 chargers, or a Tesla destination charger, you could be using them if you have enough battery to take the charge.

At the very best they might get 1C at level 2 so about an hour. I can't help but think Zero owners would want the ability for CHAdeMO charging. I'm 64 so time in the saddle would be limited to my butt, so the range of 100 miles at 70 mph works for me. The difference of doing 400 mile legs on a cross country trip is 3 hours at charge stations (assuming you leave in the morning fully charged and arrive at your motel empty) at Level 2 vs 1 hour at CHAdeMO.

I love where I live. I live on 2.5 acres in 1st Aero Squadron Airpark, a residential flying community. My hangar is insulated and 60'X40', lots of room for planes, cars, bikes and other toys.

Erasmo, I wish it was easy. I don't want to weigh the bike down with (3) extra chargers just to max out 14-50 RV outlets for a slow Level 2 charge. I'm sure (at least hope) Zero will see the light and up their voltage so fast DC charge stations can be used while on long trips. There is a big difference on long trips between a maxed out level 2 charging at 1 hour and 20 minutes vs 20 minutes on a good CHAdeMO, don't you think?

18 months ago I moved from Northern California to Columbus, New Mexico. I didn't realized how good the EV charging infrastructure was on the West Coast until I moved. My nearest charging station for a west bound trip is 227 miles in Tucson. That kind of distance would require not exceeding 65 mph (A/C on of course) on the 75 mph posted speed limit in a typical 75 kw/hr Tesla Model S. It is a CHAdeMO charger at a good sandwich shop. I really don't want to load up the bike with multiple chargers for getting the most out of very slow Level 2 charging. I would rather use that weight allowance for more batteries. I understand with the low 102 volt system of the Zero that CHAdeMO charging is a hit or miss propitiation and that brings me to why does Zero use such a low voltage? I'm old enough to remember Detroit switching from 6 volt to 12 volt and I don't know why they didn't go to 48 volt instead of 12 volt. If Zero's basic cell building block is based on a 29 ahr 3.7 volt cell then a 306 volt battery is the way to go. Fast DC charging at all stations. Reduced weight as wire sizes can be reduced. Less heat build up because lower amps produce less heat in controller, motor, batteries and cables. I know upping the voltage isn't a simple feat. The EVs that I have built meant in most cases a complete redo. Batteries, charger, controller if present one didn't allow the higher voltage, and motor if the higher voltage caused a rpm increase above its rating. Sometimes I got away with the minimum like 25 years ago hot rodding golf carts. Pulled the (6) 6 volt batteries and replaced them with (6) 12 volt batteries. Changed to a 72 volt controller and charged with (2) golf cart chargers. Same motor but now at full power it spun at twice the speed, produced twice the hp, and instead of 16 mph it ran 32 mph. Zero could easily go to a 275 amp controller instead of the 775 amp they use now and have a bit more power in watts at the new 306 voltage. The motor would require different winding for the higher voltage. The small 1.3 kw on board charger would need to be changed. Rather than letting the Lightning get a foot hold in this market with their 350 volt cycles and total CHAdeMO compatibility, it is time to up the volts like Detroit did in the early 50's.

Now after all that, back to my problem. At present if Zero did offer 306 volt models that could use CHAdeMO, I think my only way out of my EV dark hole of SW New Mexico is the max battery option of 16.3 kwhr, a well designed fairing, and driving at a speed that mimics the city cycle range. That would probably be about 40 mph constant speed. On Interstate 10 with 75 mph posted speed, not a fun proposition but at least I'll have my 4 way flashers on. If Zero's turn signals aren't LED I would swap them out. Any ideas out there to get me out of this EV dark area? Once I make it to Tucson I can drive at freeway speeds.

Thanks Terry. Since it was finished 13 years ago it's no longer a project. As a very respected member of the EV community I would like your input. Would you consider towing a battery trailer behind your Zero? I have found a small aluminum trailer with a 500 lb payload and swivel hitch (so you can still crank and bank in the twisties). Plenty of room for batteries and camping gear.

Aw, the mighty Etek. It was the first motor used on Zero motorcycles. I pushed mine so hard I bought a 2nd one just in case. But even flogging the 1st one towing a 450 lb battery trailer for a race didn't phase it at all. Still have both the first one and the new spare. The new one has only been spun by the output voltage of a single 65 watt solar panel, no battery.

A touring version has appeal for folks to get out and do serious cross country riding but the upfront investment for a company as young and small as Zero is a real gamble. To allow their current offerings the freedom of long cruising and fast DC charging they could farm out a trailer build to test the market. I'm part of the aging baby boomers, and we represent a very large population bubble with ready cash and plenty of time. My thoughts on the trailer is for it to carry batteries capable of the 300 mile range that Tesla has and be able to charge at Tesla's supercharger stations that are popping up all over the country. The battery bricks would be in a parallel configuration for riding and when plugged into a Supercharger, 100 amp rated contacts on relays would change the bricks to series for the voltage of the Supercharger. Since most all charge stations are pull in and back out, and we don't know if or when Zero will offer reverse, the trailer could be configured with a low power motor for backing up. I know, crazy idea, but it would give the motocross hierarchy of Zero's management an idea of how many of us want to travel the country on electric bikes without them having to invest in an unknown market.

On a very small and admiringly low buck amateur scale I did this about 13 years ago. Before there was Zero. I was into EVs and I used the same motor they started with 10 years ago on their first offering. It is called an Etek and was developed for Briggs and Stranton 15+ years ago when B&S entered the electric outboard market. Not a puny little Minnkota kind of trolling motor, but a serious PMDC motor. I hooked up with a group of gas minibike racers and it wasn't long before they changed their event to a 50 miler in Arizona on route 66. My little creation back then was fast but only had a range of 6 miles. My solution was to build a battery trailer and haul (6) 180 ahr flooded golf cart batteries to extend my range. To give you an idea of the strength of the Etek motor, it did just fine hauling a 110 lb scooter, a 220 lb rider and towing that 450 lb trailer for the 50 mile run plus I still had about 10 miles of range left.

Here it is unencumbered by the trailer. You have to remember this is at least 2 years before the first Zero (it wasn't called that back then).

Since I'm in the market for a Zero Motorcycle I have been reading their site's every page. When I read their 10 years of history I was taken back by their very first offering since its power train was the same that I fabricated in 2005.

I saw the Etek motor and it brought back memories of my creation. Too bad I built mine as a scooter and not dirt bike.

My range back then was 6 miles, but those were fun. Joined up with a racing minibike group as the only electric and by my 2nd year they handicapped me with a 50 mile long event in Arizona on Route 66. A 6 mile range wasn't going to cut it so a trailer was built to carry (6) 8 volt golf cart batteries to supplement my (4) Odyssey 680 AGMs. That poor Etek had to move a 110 lb scooter, 220 lb rider and tow a 450 lb battery trailer, but did with no issues.

Home Brew / Long distance, go slow

As we all know, speed kills range. On the highways you don't have a choice, but on waterways you do. I used to be a sailboat cruiser 25 years ago and always thought electric propulsion is a good fit for slow sailing speeds. First test of this theory was a kayak I set up with 64 lbs of LiFePO4 cells.

Put together (2) 12 volt, 100 ahr packs, one used as outbound battery, the other for my return leg.



An electric kayak is so quiet, and at a slow cruise speed of 4.5 mph, I have an unreal range of 80 miles, good for the entire 75 mile shoreline of Lake Tahoe.


Next project for the water is to scale things up a bit. Bond Yachts from Poland make a perfect candidate for electric propulsion. It is a 30' catamaran power cruiser that is so light and has such an efficient hull that a pair of 50 hp gas outboards can push it to 25 kt. Their designers have the same idea as me and have run some early tests with electric propulsion. 1500 watts gave an impressive 5 kt of speed.

If folks here are interested, I'll keep you posted.

Welcome Deckofficer.  Thanks for posting the video.  That is a really neat application for the Zero motor.  I hope Zero continues to make their power systems available for other applications besides their motorcycles.
That makes two of us. When you consider the current most economical planes are the new FAA Sport Class (<1320 lbs) powered by Rotax 912 and 914, burning just 5 gph at cruise will cost with overhaul TBO figured in, about $40 per hour. 1 hour of cruising on 9 kwhr even at a high rate of $0.15 per kwhr works out to $4.35 per hour after calculating battery cycle life.

If your a air junkie that wants to rack up 300 hours per year on your retirement income, big difference between $12,000 and $1,305 per year.

Hi all, this is my 1st post here, and coming to this forum has been a "long, strange trip". It started about 15 years ago when through work I was operating my first electric vessel. 32,000 ton diesel-electric offshore oil exploration rig, powered by (6) 5000 hp electric thrusters and those in turn were powered by (7) 4.6 mw diesel gen sets.

After seeing firsthand the culture of the oil industry, It was mutually decided I wasn't a good fit and I left with the attitude that I would do everything in my power to promote EVs.

Here is my first EV project, a scooter with a mean streak. I cannibalized a Rad 2 Go, in steps. When the stock controller gave out, I replaced it with a 400 amp Curtis. This led to the battery terminals melting off the cheap, stock battery so I stepped up to (4) Odyssey PC 680 in series for 48 volts. It wasn't long before the stock 1500 watt motor died and went with the Etek.



I enjoyed racing against the gas mini scooters and it wasn't long before they changed the format. Instead of a moto X style course, they decided I needed to be handicapped so the venue was changed to a 50 mile road race on Route 66 in Arizona. I still wanted to compete, and since the Etek had plenty of grunt, I put together a battery trailer with (6) 8 volt flooded lead acid batteries for a total weight of 490 lbs trailer, 110 lbs scooter and my 250 lbs, 850 lbs all up.



I've had a few more projects, one I enjoy is my motorized kayak that I put together 64 lbs of LiFePO4 cells that at 4.5 mph cruise speed has a range of 80 miles.

My next project is to convert a MotorCat 30 from gasoline outboards to electric propulsion.

I also like to fly, and that is how I found this forum. Mark Berille (sp) has been trying a lot of different motor and battery combinations in his e-gull airplane recently used the motor, controller, and battery from Zero motorcycle and take off and climb performance is quite impressive.


After researching Zero, a google search brought me to this forum and I discovered a group that seems to understand that electric is the way to go.
