I personally think the zero sr is the perfect beginner bike. Its one of the easiest safest bikes to ride and will have enough power to keep you very happy as your riding skills develop. No need to trade it in for more power later, which is what petrol bike riding is like.

I would assume that the biggest killer of the batteries is heat, discharge rate, and storage conditions.  Me personally I would rather have Li-Po batteries.  Sure it may explode in a crash but damn....it wold be light and fast.
You would prefer a heavier pack? The cells in the zero 2014-2015 are 184wh/kg. Thats better than any li-po pouch cells I have used.

I believe the life of pack is 2500 full cycles x by range of intended use. City range being the highest and used as a best case for life of pack to 80% capacity.

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Re: Efficiency between gear ratios
« on: March 14, 2015, 10:38:06 PM »
Hi,
I myself do not have the higher torque gearing option on my zero but given the speed you wish to travel, I doubt you will notice any change in range given how electic motors work. The standard gearing on your zero was designed to be the best effeciency over the speed limits normally encounted. The topspeed of the bike is achieved using afeature called 'flux weakening'. This is a feature of the controller. It increases motor speed(rpm) at the sacrifice of effeciency and motor torque. This happens above 4000rpm till 'redline' at around 6000rpm. Changing the gear ratio for more torque will increase motor rpm for a given speed and when over taking vehicles in 'spirited bursts' will result in decresed effeciency. when cruising at 90km/h the motor is in its peak effeciency zone and pulling no more power than needed to maintain its speed. Electric motors are nothing like petrol engines which are at best 40% effecient and only at a certain speed. The zero motor is around 94% effecient. Hope this helps  :)

The main thing I think zero needs to do to really get into markets outside the US is to have the standard on board charger at least be rated to what those countries standard wall sockets are. In Australia it is 2400watts. 240v and 10amps. No need to carry a 1000w power supply here as the bike charges fast enough with 2400watts instead of 1300. Range issues half with this simple cheap fix! The 2015sr is epic. My 2014 issue were fixed in 2015. My last concern is standard onboard charging. Time to fix this!
Oh and 10% more torque and battery capacity next year would have me buying another ;)

First off, making changes via the app is not going to change the effeciency of the bike. The eco and sport modes are set for this difference you are wanting to expirence. You can reduce the torque in the custom mode to 0% but that is of the range you can adjust and not actually 0% as the motor will still apply torque in accellerating. In the custom mode I have set them all to max. This gives the most regen and most accelleration at the expense of heating the motor up quicker. If I was to reduce my power consumption then I have 2 options.
1. Lower my cruise speed and/or
2. Dont accellerate as hard.
When the bike is at speed it is only consuming as much power as required to maintain its speed regardless of the app settings
The custom mode is good for setting a top speed and using it as cruise control to prevent you 'hunting for a speed' which will consume more power. So if you need to travel at 75 then make that the top speed in the app and ride at full throttle to enjoy effortless stable speed.
The harder you accellerate the more heat you produce. This is wasted energy as it can no longer be used. The aim is to keep the motor cool as a cooler motor will have a slightly lower resistance in the wiring which will increase the efficency of they whole system.

If you want max range then go 0% motor torque. Top speed set to the top speed you will go. Regen to 100%. Then increase motor torque till you have enough torque to not be a hazard on the road. The eco and sport modes set by zero are pretty good though.
Custom mode does not exceed sport mode in accelleration.
Is this the info you were after?

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Re: MCM tests the SR
« on: August 19, 2014, 01:57:34 PM »
The way the power limiting on the SR works from expirence is this: @ 100C the thermal warning light comes on blinking. This is just a warning. @ 110C the bike enters power limiting where it starts cutting the power from the controller for every degree over 110C. I have had my bike up to 128C in very spirited riding at at this temp the bike is very gutless. I have not got to the final temp cutout. Does anyone know what temp this happens at?
Its pretty frustrating but the motor cools down relatively quickly and once below 110C you have full power again.

I asked about the Bluetooth as my bms is waiting replacement and none of the charging info shows up in the app and never has.

10
My sr has the same problem. The solution is to update the firmware. Im waiting to see how this goes. Let us know how you get on as it could also be the bms is faulty or a loose connection. Does the charging show up on the phone app for you?

I have an SR and the steering is the best at of all motorcycles I have owned. Last bike was a 2008 Ducati monster S4rs. The smooth power delivery and lack of clutch for slow speed manovering makes turning this bike the easist i have expirenced. I Have the power tank and no issues getting to steering lock.

12
Yes I also have the power tank installed. Interestingly I have only had issues after a deep discharge. Discharge below 35% that is. I have only done this twice and each time has cause dramas on the charge.

Hi,
I'm in West Australia and have the first zero in the state. I have a SR Which i got from the eastern states and have been having the same issues you describe. Just this morning I went to get on my bike to go to work and it failed to fully charge last night. Its was @ 80% and would not accept anymore charge. I left for work and 500m down the road the battery dropped to 1% from 80% so i turned around and rode it very slowly back home and put it on charge again. Straight away it jumped to 80% with a loud click(switch sound). I then decided to see if it was OK to ride and left for work. Got to work which is 4km away with 82% charge. My bike seems to generate power when riding  :o
My first charge was similar with a fail to reach full charge as it stopped at 80% too. Ive done 1300km on the bike so far.
Each time it has done this I noticed the phone app indicates battery voltage is 101v @ 80% SOC instead of the 116v you get @ 100% SOC
Something is not right with my bike and the dealers like you mention are not clued up on what to do.
Would love to know more if you find out whats happening to yours ;)
