Plus, there are two Zero dealers in the SF city area.  Monroe Motors, not far from downtown and Mission Motors, located in Daly City, just outside the SF city limits.

I test rode a Vespa GTS 300 and found it a nice scooter, but I didn't care for its handling at high speeds on the freeway.  Above about 70 mph, it became kind of "darty" and the small wheels would cause the scooter to bounce around whenever a bump was encountered (and there are a lot of them on the CA freeways) or when hit by a wind gust.  For the same reason, I would recommend a vehicle with larger wheels than a Vespa scooter in San Francisco, as the city is also well known for its potholes and other wheel-eating pavement irregularities.   ::)

Munroe isn't a ZERO authorized dealer, unfortunately (I wish it were!), but DLC isn't far away. The question for me is whether the $8k premium of the ZERO S over a Vespa GTS is worth it -- I won't be on the freeway with my Vespa (ever), and I don't struggle too much with the roads on the ET4 (actually, I think I DO struggle more than I am admitting). When I tested the S and DS back to back, the S was clearly the winner for me (the vibe was immediate and visceral that that was the bike for me). As previously posted, no ABS has been the deal-breaker for me. I am starting to let that go, as the ONLY automatic bike options with ABS are Honda NC series and Aprilia Mana. I just don't connect with any of them like I do with Vespa and ZERO.

This will be my daily commuting vehicle in the California SF Bay Area.

Congratulations on your purchase!! What color did you get?

I live in SF, and I have a short commute of two miles (!) one way, though errands all over the city are part of my typical week. I currently commute on a Vespa ET4, and will be losing this to my spouse in a month or so. After many months of hand-wringing over a replacement (which really should be a bicycle, I know, I know) ... I have landed on either a Vespa GTS 300 or a 2013 ZERO S. I used to own a 2005 BMW 650CSA, have considered several ICE bikes, but I just refuse to go back to a clutch with all the stop and go of the city. It's scooter or ZERO for me -- they seem closely tied for practicality, and neither has ABS (which is really unfortunate).

Are you on surface streets only, or also on the freeway? Did you buy in DLC?

Thanks for the insightful perspectives, everyone. I am a conservative, urban-only rider and almost never ride in the rain. I guess I can always upgrade to a new bike with ABS in a few years, and in the meantime I can hone my riding skills and focus on preventive riding, in hopes that my defensive riding and emergency braking skills will keep me out of trouble! Now, I just need to get this one past the CFO at home!!

I am SO ready to buy a motorcycle for commuting to work and running errands here in San Francisco. I used to have a BMW F650 CS with ABS (from 2005-2008), and now I am using a 2005 Vespa ET4 that my partner abandoned. I have tested the S, DS, and XU, and I loved them all (favoring the S).

My "deal breaker" is the lack of ABS. I had it (and engaged it) on my BMW a few times. With fog and slippery road stripes/train tracks, plus crazy SF drivers ... I can't imagine getting a new bike without ABS. I really don't want to wait another 2-1/2 years for this on a ZERO.

How did recent ZERO purchasers get past this? Or, I am giving ABS way too much weight in this purchase decision?

hello forum members. i'm a zero rider from berkeley, california. my name's xo ... and i ride a xu.

only played with it for less than half a day so don't know much about it except that i can't lock the battery pack system because the dealer didn't have the key for it. other than that it seems pretty basic. which is what i want/like/love.

oh and hypocritically, i can't wait to see what farkley things i can do with it in the future!

Glad to know one of these is on the road here in the Bay Area! I test rode one in Daly City two weeks ago  -- I love the way it handled and performed. I think my "mistake" was also testing the S and DS models. I can't justify the expense right now for any of these -- but I will get one eventually!

I hope you enjoy your new ride!

I have been riding motorcycles for a long time with no need for ABS... I would prefer to keep the ABS off of motorcycles and the price lower but I think that ABS is already rolling towards us all in an effort to protect us from the dangers of the world and slick surfaces under our tires.

I recently read that Zero will be tooling up for ABS in 2016.  It's very expensive which is why they haven't gone that route yet.

I read that somewhere, too. I am surprised that they can't just "fit" it to the bikes, but then I know nothing about engineering a motorbike!

Thanks for the insights. I had a long talk with my CFO tonight, and we agreed that even the ZERO S doesn't achieve my target for a bike with ABS. So, I am going to sit this out until the Fall, once the dust has settled around our daughter starting elementary school in our neighborhood and our taking stock of our transportation mode options and plans -- we have two cars, four bikes, and a scooter. Another motorized anything right now is simply not ideal.

I will stay tuned here and keep my eye on how things shape up for 2014 and beyond!

Cheers!

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / ZERO XU : design as deal-breaker?
« on: May 01, 2013, 12:41:57 AM »

I have had my motorcycle license for just over eight years. I learned to ride in San Francisco on a 2005 BMW F 650 CS (belt-drive single cylinder city bike). I sold it after about four years (when my daughter arrived).

I changed jobs, and have been commuting on our 2005 Vespa ET4 over the past couple years -- only two miles each way here in the city.

I stopped into a local dealer to "browse" and ended up test-riding a "new" 2010 Brammo Enertia. I loved the fit and finish, but the fan noise, ergonomics, and turning radius were enough to make me say no, even at $4,400 with 6 month warranty.

Then, I tested the 2013 ZERO S a couple weeks ago, and I fell in love. I simply can't justify that expense for my intended purpose.

So, I tried the 2013 XU last Saturday. This bike looks "cobbled together" -- and not in a good way, IMO. Once on the bike, I liked the geometry, the ergonomics, handling, and power. If it looked better, I would have bought it on the spot.

Is there anyone here who would (or did) buy the XU with reservations about it's appearance? Or, am I an idiot for even caring?

Thanks!
