Thanks odedmaz ! That worked. Successfully changed Custom Mode settings, as well as finally being able to download battery logs from the bike, which had also been broken for quite a while.
Can you detail, what exact make/model/year, the decoded logs info for model / version / revision, and which android version you have, what app version does not work, what version is working?

I asked before but this needs to be documented better for the unofficial manual. This seems to be a common problem talked about on the forums.

The version of the app installed on my phone that DID NOT work, was v1.5.7 (20).
I installed odedmaz' suggestion, v1.2.8 and it IS working.
still on same android phone, 5.1 (22) (on a Motorola Moto G)
Bike is 2014 Zero model S (no chargetank or powertank) - MBB logs say it is:
Firmware rev.      52
Board rev.         1
Model              SS

Hope this helps

bike is a 2014 model S (no powertank/chargetank).

I am unable to download the battery logs after the last time I got it back (so I can't confirm the bike firmware version), but Zero said that they were working on a new version of the app to resolve whatever's causing that problem. Haven't heard back from them in a while.

The bike was taken to a dealer a few weeks ago to get the latest firmware installed. I'm assuming it's fully up to date.

The app version is v1.5.7 (20)    and it's running on android 5.1 (22) if that's relevant.

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / unable to change Custom mode.

Hi all,

after the last time I got my motorcycle back from the factory, I have been unable to change the settings for the Custom mode using the Zero App on my android. The app shows mileage, battery state of charge, etc, so it's definitely communicating with the motorcycle. When I change max torque, or max speed, or anything else under the custom mode, it momentarily shows the setting I have set, and then a few seconds later resets back to what it was before. I have tried resetting to factory defaults in the app, reinstalling the app, and re-doing the Bluetooth pairing with the motorcycle, and nothing makes a difference.

Has anyone else experienced this or have a fix for this?

Cheers,
Tico

Gotcha. Thanks for the clarification. The absolute last thing I want is to add unreliability to my bike, so no plans to try serial'ing a couple of chargers.

Cheers,

There is a trick for ac voltage reduction that might work for this. Using a 24 volt secondary transformer rated for the 20 amp current, you could buck the voltage down to 253 volts nominal. These transformers are cheap and readily available. The ac phase must be connected the right way to reduce the total voltage by connecting the 24 volt secondary in series with the 277 volt line.

Cool -- I forgot about how common those little 24V transformers are.

I suppose another option could be to just put two chargers in series, since 277v / 2 gives us 138.5V --- well within the 85-265V input range.

7
Wait a moment are those the measured voltages at you outlet?

Yes-- but not a common service outlet.  a single phase of 277V delivered on a L7-15 or L7-20 receptacle, typically for lighting purposes.

I have dreams of 3-phase 240/416V power outlets being commonly accessible, but alas, that appears rarely available in the Americas.

Thanks Brian, good to know.

Also, to begin answering myself -- apparently the spec sheet for the Delta-Q chargers specify 85-265VAC input range, so it comes up a wee bit short of 277V. Also, apparently their PF is .99 @120V and .98 @230V, which is pretty nice.

Hi all,

A bit of an odd question -- are any of the commonly available chargers able to function on 277V service?
 Has anyone done so?
Looks like a single phase of 277V@20A = 4.4kW (assuming 80% circuit breaker load and 1.0PF).

got the bike back -- apparently nothing was different about my bike -- the dealer just had to update the software on their laptop for it to correctly recognize my 2014.

It still won't download the battery logs, but apparently Zero is coming out with a new version of the Android app that fixes that problem??

So I dropped off my 2014 S at a local dealer this past Friday to get the firmware updated, and I heard back yesterday evening (Tuesday) that when they hooked up the computer to it, that the bike identified itself as a 2017, and could not update the firmware. They're gonna call Zero and see what to do.  No other details so far, but has anyone else heard of this happening?

Maybe the last time they applied a firmware update, they chose wrong image or set it wrong? Or maybe they put in a new MBB board somehow.

Yeah, it's very possible that it has a different MBB-- the bike had to be shipped back to Zero for battery problems a few months ago, but I wasn't told that they'd replaced anything. Still no news.

Well, I got some news -- it looks like there was a break in the ignition switch wiring for some reason (??) and that the  techs were able to communicate with the bike after bypassing that.

I still don't know why I wouldn't have seen the occasional blink LED indicating state of charge on the BMS window, much less why a wire would randomly break while the bike was *not* being driven (as opposed to a dirt bike being thrashed on the trails) ..

We'll see. I'm pleased that this hasn't dragged on as much as previous failures, and I've got to say I'm sure that contacting the factory and begging them to bug the dealership has a lot to do with that.

Howdy NEW2elec,

I don't tend to follow football, but everyone around here is going nuts-- we'll see how it all turns out. I just wanted to make some sweet tips delivering food over the weekend and let people party (or mourn).

Anyhow, I don't doubt that the guys at the Zero factory are going to do their best to make it right, but at this point, I don't know how many more breakdowns I should expect on a new bike before the warranty runs out. If they just swap out the BMS board again, how long until I'm stuck on the side of the road again?

I've had the bike since May 21, 2016 (new), and it was dead for 27 days in June/July, then 18 days in December, and now 3 days and counting (since January 31) -- so 48 out of 257 days is  a dead bike for 19% of the time that I've owned it.

As for the current symptoms, the BMS lights don't blink at all, with the key on or off, and the dash doesn't light up or indicate anything either. 100% dead.

I wish I had  had the money to follow Electric Terry's advice to get a 2015 (or later model) for better reliability, but that ain't happening, and I already paid a ton of money to exchange my piece of crap 2012 model for the 2014 model because it was supposed to be more reliable.

Honestly I'm hoping they just swap out the whole bike for almost any other bike at this point. I have zero confidence in it at this point. Pun intended.

Well, Nicholas at Zero talked to the folks at the local dealership, and arranged for my bike to get picked up tomorrow, and a tech at the factory is supposed to contact the dealership to start troubleshooting as soon as they have it.

Getting the mechanics to start to look at the bike two days after the problem occurred is the fastest start time yet (compared to the previous problems) so hopefully my frustrated messages have resulted in this being taken seriously.

So basically no real updates yet regarding the cause (or the solution), but I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

In the meantime, I was hoping to make some quick cash driving food deliveries for all the insanity that is hitting Houston, what with the Super Bowl being in-town this weekend, but alas, it ain't gonna happen without a bike.
