Hello, everybody! I have a 2010 Zero DS in great condition with two caveats:
1) The left plastic has a hole in it where the turn signal goes, as seen in the picture below. It doesn't affect functionality; the duct tape on the backside keeps the signal in place.
2) The battery is dead. I left the motorcycle in a parking garage while I left on a year long work contract with specific instructions to leave it plugged in. When I get back, the motorcycle is unplugged and the charger is giving me the low voltage warning.
Everything else about the motorcycle is in tip top shape and original. The motor is new; less than 10 miles on it, replaced a little over a year ago. Same with the speedo sensor by the front tire.
Never been in an accident. Lightly used as an SF commuter.
The motorcycle is located in SOMA in San Francisco.
I'm asking$2000 $1000 OBO. Modular helmet shown in the pictures is included.

Protomech is 2 for 2. I zip tied the iphone onto the (now mostly useless) speedometer and it uses gps to gauge my current speed. There's some delay and it's hard to read in direct light, but it's better than nothing.
Protomech, you're the man. I've ordered the new sensor, I'll update here when I have it hooked up.

My speedometer doesn't work. I'm pretty sure the sensor attached to the front fork is busted (there's supposed to be a blue LED to show it's active, but it doesn't light up). Does anybody know where I can get a new one, aside from Zero themselves? I was talking to customer support for a long while about my motor, but after the motor issues were resolved, they stopped responding. I don't blame them, they're pretty busy, but I can only go without a speedo for so long.
Worse case scenario, I have a spare iPhone with a speedometer app, but I would rather get the built in speedo working again.

What about a 2 speed dog clutch? It would give you a "starting" gear and a "cruising" gear. Would that lose as much power as the CVT?

Thanks for the advice, both of you. I got most of them out with some compressed air, but there's still one or two stubborn ones. I'll continue to work on it, since I need to wait for the motor cover to come in the mail anyway.

Hello, everybody! Here's the story: I have a 2010 Zero DS that had some burned brushes. I shipped the motor to Zero for service and when I got it back, a handful of packing peanuts managed to wedge themselves inside the motor. I can turn the gearshaft with my hand and hear the peanuts moving around. I called Zero customer support and the guy I spoke to said it should be fine to run as is, that they'll disintegrate or get pushed out.
So, here's the question: does this guy know what he's talking about? Running a motor with foreign material inside just sounds like a recipe for disaster, but I know nothing about electric motors.

I ran out of juice once, but that was planned. I had just bought my bike in San Jose and wanted to see how far up the peninsula it could go. After 30 miles at 55mph, it died in Redwood City and I had it towed the rest of the way to SF.
I've also run out of gas in my car, on more than one occasion and needed my grandfather to drive out with a bucket of gas. I wonder if that's not the real source of the miles paranoia. With a car, if you run out of gas, you just get more. The batteries require a considerable amount of time to charge and aren't swappable. Even a half hour charge time is considerably more than the 5 minutes it takes to dump a gallon of gas into your car.

Hello everybody! I just bought myself a used 2010 DS with around 100 miles on it. I've ridden it for a couple of days and it seemed fine, but yesterday, I noticed a strong electronic burning smell when I was at stop signs. When I got home, I noticed a stream of light colored smoke coming from the motor. I rode it around the block this morning and the smell is still there, even though the motor is cool to the touch. It seemed to handle just fine, despite the smell.
I'm guessing this is a bad sign? I've heard of motor brushes burning up on the 2010 models, but it seems odd to me that it would "burn" even though the motor is cool. I'm at a loss as to whether I should have somebody look at it, or just keep driving it until the motor fails or if this is completely normal?
