Well it's been a month now since the battery went out.  I've been told that they are looking for another but will most likely have to build one.  Not a whole lot of 2011 motorcycle parts lying around I'm sure.  I've got the feeling that although they have been very polite about it, this isnt really a priority.  I'm still hoping that they can make this right--soon.

Just thought I'd give an update.

Hang in there. The same thing happened to me after I ran into issues with my original 2010 DS. They eventually swapped it out with a dealer demo 2011 DS with only 37 miles. I drove that one home and it also was not acting right. Last fall Zero built a brand new pack from scratch and got it installed on my bike. Has worked flawlessly ever since...well until I tore my patellar tendon and have not been able to ride it yet this season!

Buy Sell Trade / 2011 Zero DS Like New with only 612 miles!

Denver, CO FOR SALE $5800 OBO

Local Craigslist Ad: http://denver.craigslist.org/mcy/3773624019.html

2011 Like New Zero Motorcycles DS with only 611 miles (<100 miles on new battery)!

This bike was a warranty replacement for my original 2010 DS that was purchased originally in Aug 2010. This bike for sale was only used last summer (2012) before the entire battery pack was replaced by Zero. This bike only has a little over 100 miles on the BRAND NEW battery pack system. This is like getting a brand new 2011 Zero DS.

The Colorado State EV credit for motorcycles is gone in 2013. This is you chance to get a phenomenal deal on a bike that originally cost $11,000 before any credits/rebates.

The bike has performed flawlessly since the replacement! 43 real world miles of range. I would commute to my job 18 miles each way from my home and make it home with plenty of range! Completely silent...all you hear is the motor whine, the quite belt drive, and the wind. I am only selling this motorcycle because we have another child on the way and need to make room for a third automobile.

Sale include the Zero branded soft luggage and Spitfire aftermarket windshield. Both can easily be removed.

Please reply to this post or PM with questions.

Do you have a link to document?

Hi Rewski,  are you in Colorado?  Looking to buy a 2013?

Nope I was one of the first with a 2010 DS in Colorado that Zero ultimately traded for a 2011 DS because of all the electrical issues I had. I was contemplating a 2013 but not now without the rebate. I'll just hold on to my 2011. It gets me to work and back 30 miles round trip!

However,  it would be nice if the designers thought about the extra money they could make selling the next gen powertrain for 'old' model owners to fit who aren't content with a slower shorter range bike because they can't afford 10k every year for an upgrade.

I have to agree with this. When I bought my original 2010 DS, Zero was running a promo for a free 2 year "no fault" warrantee. This was essentially an upgrade warrantee that would enable to you get any part upgraded if it broke but more importantly, an future upgraded part in future model years for 50% cost. I believe this was Neal's original plan and the reason for the style of battery pack the Zero has in place. The problem was that the 2011's already changed the frame to accommodate the belt drive so that even meant you could not even upgrade that portion of the bike. Obviously this was not my only reason for buying this bike back in 2010 but it also made it a stronger argument for the wife :)

Hi Adam,
I just got an (almost) new 2011 model S.
Do you still have the PDF of the user manual?

Thanks

I believe CO uses the actual price paid. I don't know if tax, shipping are included.

75% * ($11895 - $4449) = $5584.50 credit

$11895 - $5584.50 - $200 = $6110. I don't know if the federal rebate stacks with the CO rebate (for example, if the CO rebate is applied after the federal rebate then the federal rebate is effectively (100% - 75%) * 10% = 2.5%. Still an extra $300 off if the federal credit goes through, bringing net cost to $5813.

Ridiculously good. I want to move to CO : P

Congrats on the new bike! Just be aware that you will get taxed by the Feds on the CO credit the following year. I was a bit surprised when I got the notice of the "income" I received from the State of CO for my original purchase of my 2010 DS. Nevertheless, the CO deal for electric bikes is a no brainer. Enjoy the ride!

Yes it is a 2011 and I loved the slight but significant upgrades from the 2010 I had for almost two years. Also thanks for the analysis about trade-in/value above. Unfortunately the price I can ultimately sell it for is what someone will actually pay for it. The good news is that despite having the original 2010 for almost 2 years and taking advantage of the significant federal and CO state rebates the original bike only cost me about $5500 net. Add in the additional $1000 I just spent for the exchange and I'm only about $6500 in the hole not including insurance and registration. The other interesting part is that I have not claimed any rebate on this "new" 2011, so if I were to sell it locally the buyer could still claim both a federal and state rebate. Possibly another selling point on the bike at least here in CO.

I think when I get the bike back I will give it a fair chance again but any more faults/problems with it I will get any warrantee work done and sell this bike...or possibly pursue a manufacture buy back if it gets to be a problem.

I'll keep everyone posted.

First a little background. I bought a 2010 DS when they first came available after riding one at a Zero demo event in Denver, CO in Spring of 2010. That bike served me well for my short commute (and was a great upgrade from my Vectrix scooter) until the throttle had to be swapped twice and finally in the summer of 2011 the entire battery was swapped in my garage by a Zero service technician.  I continued riding it last year into the beginning of the winter until is started faulting again (and making a clunking sound but no acceleration on startup). I could always just recycle it off and on and it would work. I never had any shut downs while riding. Over winter did not ride it much at all but come March I was ready to ride it again. Took it to work a few times with the startup glitch happening a few times but always making it home, until one day it would not come out of the fault. At this point there was finally a dealer in Denver so my talks with Zero said just to get it to the dealer for some diagnostics. I dropped it off in April and 7 weeks (yes 7 weeks) later they told me they did not know what the problem was and offered to swap me a 2011 DS at the dealer for only $1000. I said sure and bought the new bike. On my way home from the dealer the bike shut off while I was cruising at about 40 mph. No further faults like that. Then the range on the bike became an issue. I then learned about the run in process where the computer continues to adjust the range indicator based on riding style etc. Zero encouraged me to continue to ride it and the gauge/range would fix itself over time. So throughout this summer I would do rides around my home of 12-16 miles before the range bar was empty and flashing then come home, hoping at some point the range would pick up. All summer I was never able to ride to work because it is 28 round trip and I did not want to get stranded. So finally after doing about 10-13 charge cycles without any change in range, I took my bike back to the dealer for the recall stuff and for them to run the diag again on this bike. It has now been there for 4 weeks and finally had to call Zero's director of customer service twice to find out they finally were shipping a new 2011 battery to the dealership for install in the bike.

That brings me to today. I should be getting this bike back next week with a fresh battery and he fully no more issues, but now I am strongly considering just trying to sell the bike locally or on eBay and be done with it. Wait until next year for 2013 bikes or (dare I say) consider switching to another brand in 2013. If I do decide to sell the 2011 Zero DS what is a fair price to attempt to sell? It will essentially be a brand new bike again (there are only about 250 miles on the odo).

Thanks for reading the long post just to get to my question but I think typing this whole thing out was a bit therapeutic for the drama I have endured this year.

Speaking of rebates, I have this feeling that I will be getting a 1099 from the organization that sent me my $900 CA EV rebate at the end of this year.  If that happens, I will be paying both Federal (about 25%) and CA state (about 7.5%) income taxes on that rebate.  The government giveith now and the government takeith away later.   :(

You are correct. In 2011 I had to pay the Feds tax on my CO state rebate from my 2010 DS purchase in 2010. Still a great deal here in CO!

Yesterday we ran it until it stopped us, all bars were gone at 20miles and the bike stopped at 40miles.

I just heard back from Zero about this issue after they just swapped out my 2010 for a "new" 2011. There is a process called the "Running In" period. It states that for the 2011 bikes (not sure about the 2012s) the first 30 cycles of the battery is the run-in period. A cycle is considered using 1/3 of your battery capacity. The first 4 charge cycles will have a preset usage rate that reflects a very conservative percentage of your charge remaining. After 4 partial charges the indicator will begin to reflect a percent charge remaining based on the previous 4 riding cycles. You will not experience full capacity and accurate gauge until about 30 partial cycles on the bike! Attached is a pic I snapped of the PDF they sent me. I can email it to you if you PM me. Hope this helps. It sure did to me!

Does anyone have the PDF of the 2011 Zero DS Owners Manual? Zero just exchanged my broke 2010 for a 2011 dealer floor model with 38 miles but the little USB drive they gave me has the 2012 model owners manual. PM me and I'll given you my email address to send it to. Thanks!
