General Discussion / Hi I have a few battery supply questions (Why aren't there bulk supply lines?)

Hi guys, I was looking into batteries while I'm finding the proper chasis.
But I'd love to use NiMH or LiPO4 [over unsealed lead], but, I can't seem to understand why there aren't established bulk productions from hybrid vehicles, such as the Prius, that would help bring down costs.
Sorry, that's really poorly worded. But what I mean to say, is that can't we piggy back on the orders for Prius packs, or roadster factories, or is the expense of batteries coming purely from materials rather than lack of bulk-scale?

P.S, I've tried to found good links on learning about batteries. I understand the chemistries, I just am having difficulties dealing with the current market information, and I assume most of the resources I've found are outdated.
