Tech Help / Re: AC Motor EV Conversion
« on: September 23, 2009, 05:21:15 PM »
Thanks for the welcome. I will post at diy soon. My main focus right now will be on the inverter controller design. Just not sure how to spec it. Need to learn more about the motors. The one I described could come to me very cheap and thought it might be a good start.

As I learn more on the motors I'd like to get some feedback from the more experienced here. If you were designing/building around an ac induction motor, what specifications are you looking for in an inverter/controller? I'll assume low cost, high quality/efficiency as a requirement.

Tech Help / AC Motor EV Conversion
« on: September 21, 2009, 05:24:42 PM »
Hello All. I have been thinking of doing an EV conversion using an ac motor. I have experience in designing 3 phase inverter drives and want to attempt to design a drive control system to be used in a motorcycle. My problem is selecting a motor. I am not sure how to size the motor and what can be expected of it. Any suggestions on a good cheap motor to start with. I am looking at a used motor for sale but not sure if it would be sufficient or what to expect. Here are the specs:

Frame = 184T
Volts = 230/460
Amps = 12.7/6.37
RPM = 1740
HP = 5
HZ = 60
INS = F
Min eff = 85.5%
Nom eff = 87.5%
PF = 84%
AMB 40 deg C
SF = 1.15
