I guess this mean Zero will stop supporting any 2012 and before model. Oh well, I just sold my 2011 XU a couple months ago, I guess that would be either trade-in for a new zero bike, which I still have to pay another $10K, or it will be sit at home with a anytime soon to be a dead battery... (I heard the 2011 use molicel and it is about to go down really fast after 3 or 4 years of used)

Congraz iSurgeon. You did a very nice job. I also have an 2011 XU, and also planning to do the same. The only thing is I am not too familiar with the electrical stuff. But according to your post, it seems it is pretty much a plug-and-play swap. I am just wondering did you need to do any special tweak to make it works with Leaf Cell? I also wonder will I need to do anything with the delta charger and the original gauge to make it works with the leaf batteries.

congrats to your new bike. You may want to check out this thread about unlock the LSM
http://electricmotorcycleforum.com/boards/index.php?topic=2804.0

I also got a 2011 XU, but luckily my is an unlock one but still registered at LSM. Right now, I am looking at battery and way to increase its range. I did contact Zero once, but have no reply from them yet.

Ride it home alright and after charging it again, everything goes back to normal. I see the green full charge indicator, after a couple hours of charging. Just glad it is working well.

I have a 2011 XU. It was working fine without problems. But today, after I rode it to work and charge it after, something strange happen.
In the BMS, I have the trickle charge indicator keep on flashing. Usually when I plug it in, the charge indicator, or the trickle charge stay on and also the current light. And then after around 2 hrs, I will have the green light show it charged up. But today I have charged it for 3 hrs and I got this flashing light. I have tried to unplug it, wait for while and plug it in again, and still the same thing.
Anyone know what the meaning of it? I tried to search the manual on-line and I could not find anything about it. And I am still at my work place, I just want to make sure I can make it home in one piece...

I also got a 2011 XU, it runs flawless so far. The range is 25km each charge. I find I have improved range after let the bike plugged in for 1 winter season. (BTW, I was away from Canada last winter) I only got 20km before.

Anyway, I think the 2011 S, with double the battery of XU, you will get around 50km avg per charge, all depends on the speed and terrain.

For me personally, I really want to see Zero makes improved battery for the older model. So that those older model owner can continue use our bikes with increased range.

I didn't install any frame/support. I now ride it with a tank/tail bag more often then the saddle bag, as it gives less air-drag. For an e-bike, I find every little bit that can reduce drag or increase range is important. The next step I may be need to lose some more weight. Ha Ha!

Jerry, what top speed you get from your 2011XU? I also have a 2011 XU, registered as LSM, but the dealer told me it is not restricted. I got 85kph top.

For the XU, 30miles range is more like 2012. 2011 is more like 20miles range, with shorter charge time.  But that is the real world range. The advertise range is when it runs at the optimal situation, with unbearable low speed.

For the battery break-in: I do found I have better range after. Before, I had only 2 bar flashing after 16km ride, but after the break-in charge cycle, I can have 18-19km ride then I will see the 2bar flashing. I think it is more like charge cycle, calibrate the display, and rider learning.

I had the 2011XU for almost a year, and only riding it during summer time. The top speed is around 51mph, or 85kph max. So it is not "highway worthy". And the range is around 22~24km, with a mix of slight hills (up and down) and short highway and city. I ride to work on one way, around 20km, with short highway (5km, 80kph) and then some uphill, I have one bar left when I arrive my office, and 3 bars left on the same way back when I arrive home. (downhill and highway).

I have "break-in" the battery already, according to the Zero "break-in" process. and I find each bar has the range around 2km.

And my current odometer is around 800km.

So I will say your XU is standard, pretty much as what I have.

Well, being an Apple product user, you are kind of expected that the next model will be better then the current model. But it just doesn't make sense to keep waiting for the next one, as there will be infinite waiting. So I usually like ZeroSinMa, wait for the second generation so the product is more refine, or buy the last generation at a big discount price.

I found Zero has a similar approach as Apple, which I think is better then see the announcement but never receive the product.

The other motto I always keep is buy it when you need it (or want it) and then use it as much as possible, don't let it just sit around collecting dust and become obsolete. I think this apply to most tech gadgets and so does to Zero.

Here is the situation I have:
The way I ride to work consisted of a stretch of the rode that goes 80kph(around 50mph), and a couple uphill climb. After I arrive my work place, I rode around 19.6km and had 1 bar left.
On the same way home, some downhill and also the stretch of 80kph road, and when I arrive home, I have about 3bar left.

so on average, I get around 23km range, which is around 14miles. Takes around 2hrs to full charge.

I got the 2011 zero XU for over 3 months already, I have ride it to work, grocery shopping, errands, or a short leisure ride after dinner. I find once you realize what the zero bike is and you will be very happy with it.

To me a zero is:
a commuter bike. - it takes you from point A to point B, recharge in point B, and ride back to point A.
It is also a perfect bike for short errand trip, you won't feel pain to ride a 8km distance to a grocery, buy some yogurt, and then another 8km home. You won't feel you waste so much gas just because all you want is to buy 1 orange.
It is good for a short ride around the neighbourhood. There is no noise to irritated your neighbour, and most of them will find the Zero is a cool bike.

A Zero is not:
A Touring bike. I will not ride my Zero to tour around the town, even if I know where is the electric plug.
Definite not for cross country.
If you like to mechanically upgrade and tweak your bike in every imaginable way you can, a zero is definite not your cup of tea. I own scooter before and I actually transform it from air-cool to liquid-cooling, but when I got a zero, all I can do is just some minor body mod. May be I am just not that good at electrical and software engineering.

So I receive good and bad comments on my XU, some laughs at the range, but some just find it so cool to ride on it. But as long as you know your range, purpose, and where you can recharge your bike, a Zero is definitely a fun and cool bike to have.

I love my Zero!!!

Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2012 and older / BMS working or Glitch?
« on: September 05, 2012, 01:03:55 AM »
I rode my 2011XU yesterday, I rode it for 24km already, and I have only one bar left. According to my past experience, the battery should be almost used up.

So I am only 200m from home, and all of a sudden, the bike seems losing its power, I cannot go past 45km/h, and the warning light flash once. No stalling though. So I baby the bike for the last 200m and got home, and when I turn off and turn on again, it seems there is not enough power to power up the bike. So I charge it and after the battery is full, I take it out for a spin again and it seems it is back to normal.

Since I am only a newbie regarding the Zero, just wondering is it normal? or am I experience the glitch which many of you are experiencing it? BTW, my 2011 XU has only 450km on the odometer.

on a side note, I rode it with a mix of city and highway, with a stretch of the road that I go for a little bit over 80km/h (50mph), its top speed. And I can definitely feels the winds drag. I am planing to get a puig city sport windshield. See if this will improve the rage and speed a bit...

This is great news. I hope it get to a production process that many end user can get a hand on this battery for their ev. I would love to get one for my 2011XU, to increase its range. I would upgrade it in a heartbeat.

I am imagining just a battery upgrade for my zero and then (maybe) a software update for the controller/BMS if needed, and then result in increase range with the same performance....how cool that will be!!
