Home Brew / Random Question
« on: December 31, 2011, 03:29:55 AM »
Has anyone taken the rectifier off of a motorcycle stator/generator or off a car alternator and tested how many volts it would put out?

If not, any theories on possible volt/Amp outputs?

A simple GPS mount on the handle bars provides:  MPH, Distance, Average speed and much more

A $15 analoge (Ebay) State of charge meter shows not only battery charge but also acts as a rough amp meter.  (Keep the needle high in the green, get more mileage)

Good job.  Nothing beats that first ride when people see you coming but look at you strange 'cause they don't hear anything.  Or the feeling of acomplishment, you did it, very few people have done what you have.  Good job.

Home Brew / Pics of new completion

Sorry the pics are a bit small.  Formerly a 1991 Kawasaki ninja, this conversion is a 48v system running the ME0708, with an alltrax 4844 controller.  It's almost rediculous how quiet it is, making it more, "NINJA," than ever before.

My first test ride topped out at 46.5 mph
My second ride was 49.6 mph, 3.1 mph better and all I did was add the fairing.

Thank you everyone.  Without the help I received from this awesome forum I'd still be pacing through my livingroom scratching my head.

It started as a 1991 ninja.  I'm gonna have to take pics with and without the faring and post it as a poll.  I think I like it better without but I'm wondering if thats just because I've been looking at the frame of it for months now while I worked on it.

Home Brew / AHA!! Done! One question though. . .

I'm so excited!  My bike is finally up and running.  46.5 mph on a stock rear sprocket and controller set to 80% max.
One of the best parts, I talked to my girlfriend again about learning to ride.  Seeing how quiet the bike was and that it's basically an automatic since there's no gear shifting required, I got a solid maybe.  Not the usual, "Heck No."

Question:  When parking a standard motorcycle on an incline, leaving the engine in gear will prevent the bike from rolling forward and releasing the kickstand which will make it collapse.  Anyone have a good way of preventing this on an electric?  Only thing I could think of would be using a brake disk lock.

Just trying to problem solve before I run into the problem.   Thanks.

I don't suppose I could just whack it with a hammer like an old car starter? LOL.  Thanks for your help, a little direction really helps reduce the amount of pacing through the living room.

Now that you mention it, a few days ago, I would hear a faint,"tick," when I turned the key switch on.  Now, nothing.  How would I go about testing the contactor?  Don't really have the money to buy a new one unless I know that's the problem.

Tech Help / Stumped
« on: July 23, 2011, 06:14:30 AM »
 My motorcycle is all hooked up and i'm getting anxious.  I've gone over the wiring diagrams provided by alltrax again and again.  I turn the key on, (chain disconected) my controller green led goes solid, I twist the throttle and the motor goes a quarter turn, stops and clicks like a car with a dead battery.  Bateries are charged.  I can't find anything wrong.  Any Ideas?

Motor = ME 0708
Controller = alltrax 4844

48v system

Also, no error flags when I plug the controller into my laptop.

I still have it but the cable went into the original engine block.  That wouldn't work with the electric would it?

Home Brew / speedometers

What do you guys recomend for speedometers?  I was checking out the "cycle Analyst," but I don't have spoked wheels.  I don't think it'll work.  I'll just get a handle bar mount for my GPS for my test rides, but my donor cycle is registered non-op, and I'm pretty sure I'm gonna need a permanently mounted speed'o to re-register it as operational.

Home Brew / Re: Do two 24v Chargers Equal one 48v Charger?

Check out soneil chargers.  I found a 48v 2 amp for $100 or 4amp for around $175, at thunderstruck.com.  I haven't used them, so I can't give you any reviews, but they're small enough to mount on-board if you wanted.  By far the cheapest I've come across.

WOW! I never expected to get this much help, you guys are awesome.  Thanks!

The bike is a 1991 Kawasaki ninja 500ex.  It has a bit of room for a larger rear sprocket but not a whole lot.  The front sprocket is really my first main concern and you've all been a ton of help.  Speed isn't really the goal of this bike, it's mostly going to be used to commute a few miles through city streets to work. . . and to show off of course.

Thanks again everyone.
