although i did not have the same issues you are having, my original chain ate itself in about 8k miles, it was pretty shitty.

That lines up almost perfectly with jotjode’s 14,000 km and my 13,000 km.

I lacked a bit of patience and had already ordered an RK ZXW chain, a JT rubber-damped front sprocket, and an Esjot rear sprocket from Carpi Moto in Genoa before your post. Had I waited, I would have used your suggested source, kawaschrauber.de, which would probably have allowed me to save on the customs fees for imports into Switzerland by using a parcel forwarding address in southern Germany. At least Carpi Moto deducted the VAT.

In addition, unlike the MVXZ2, the ZXW doesn’t come with a screw-type master link, so I’ll have to rely on my bike shop for the installation.

Patience is a virtue. ;)

Hi Jürgen,

Yep, it is still the first chain and sprockets. So it should be the original Regina chain, which is probably toast as well, even if my riding style is likely a bit less spirited than yours.

Have you had good experiences with JT’s rubber-cushioned front sprocket, the JTF704.15RB? And which 44T rear sprocket and 525 RK chain model did you buy? I couldn’t find that information in your much appreciated 100,000 km review.

Thanks for your thoughts. I am somewhat relieved that no one has suggested a motor-related issue based on their own experience.

The bike has only 13,000 km / 8,000 mi on it, and the chain, front sprocket, and rear sprocket still look to be in pretty good shape based on simple checks: chain tension at different positions and trying to pull the chain away from the rear sprocket.

The issue is strongest at around 80 km/h / 50 mph, but it starts at about 65 km/h / 40 mph. Above 90 km/h / 55 mph, it becomes less noticeable again.

One interesting detail is that the problem has become much more noticeable since I switched to Michelin Road 6 tyres. As these are said to have better self-damping than the previously fitted Pirelli Diablo Rosso III, I would actually have expected them to mask rather than amplify a drivetrain-related issue. So this may simply be a coincidence, with the actual problem developing around the same time.

Even though the chain and sprockets look intact, given the notoriously high torque of these bikes, there may still be an issue with uneven chain stretch, tight spots, or uneven sprocket wear. I will therefore have the chain and sprockets checked and measured properly at the bike shop, using tools that I don’t have.

Hi everyone,

I ride an Energica EsseEsse9+ RS with the EMCE motor and notice a strong jerking/surging sensation under partial load at around 80 km/h / 50 mph. The effect is not only felt as a vibration or oscillation, but can also be heard acoustically as a changing frequency.

The issue does not occur under full acceleration or during regenerative braking, but mainly when maintaining speed with light throttle. The vibration/oscillation is strong enough that my Givi tank bag visibly swings back and forth. Uneven road surfaces seem to amplify the effect.

Could this be caused by uneven chain stretch or a tight spot in the chain? A manual check of the chain, without measuring tools, did not reveal anything obvious. Or are there other known causes on the EsseEsse9+ RS / Ribelle RS / EMCE bikes that can produce this kind of partial-load surging?

Any suggestions on what to check first would be much appreciated.

Energicas do not use a separate flasher relay. Instead, the indicator function and load monitoring are integrated into the bike’s central electronics. Therefore, the only solution is either using indicators with a compatible current draw, or adding resistors where needed.

I wanted to share a potentially useful finding for owners of the Energica Eva, Eva Ribelle and EsseEsse9 in Europe.

Given that the original Energica LED indicators still are unavailable as spare parts, finding a suitable replacement is somewhat difficult.

It is already known that the LED indicators used on certain model years of the Aprilia Caponord are identical to those fitted to the Energica Eva family. However, these Aprilia-labelled parts usually cost around €45 each.

What may be less widely known is that the LED turn indicators used on the Fantic Caballero 700 and on the XMF/XEF 125, model years 2023–2024, also are identical. In Germany, these Fantic indicators can be ordered for around €20 each from Fantic parts suppliers.

This is relevant mainly for European Energica models, because US-market Energicas were equipped with conventional bulb indicators rather than LED indicators. If LED indicators are retrofitted to those bikes, additional resistors would be needed so that the electrical load remains within the range expected by the bike’s electronics.

One important practical note: some soldering is required for the Aprilia as well as the Fantic indicators. The easiest option is probably to reuse the cables and connectors from the original defective Energica indicators. Alternatively, suitable Molex connectors can be ordered separately. The connector type appears to be:

Molex 18–24 AWG, Standard .062” pitch / 3.68 mm, 2-circuit connector

Depending on the side of the bike, you may need either the male connector on the left side or the female connector on the right side. However, these Molex connectors are relatively expensive and quite fiddly to work with, so reusing the original Energica indicator cables may be the more practical solution.

Congrats on hitting 100,000 km with the Ribelle! Not only is the total mileage seriously impressive, but your yearly mileage is in a completely different league from mine.

The durability — and the bike’s overall relative lack of drama, apart from the occasional electronic gremlin — makes me genuinely optimistic about my SS9+.

I’m also very glad that all four of your crashes ended comparatively well… although, “comparatively well” becomes a rather elastic phrase when four broken ribs are part of the story.

From what I could find, the "brick" of an EVSE usually contains the control pilot signaling, ground-fault protection, current and temperature monitoring, relays, and the basic safety logic. So its design and build quality is indeed safety-critical.

That's why I'm more than a bit uneasy about ultra-compact designs where everything is packed into the J-plug. Beyond heat dissipation and long-term reliability, I also wonder how well fault protection can realistically be implemented in such a small space - especially AC ground-fault detection and DC leakage detection, which seem to be essential to avoid blinding upstream GFI/RCD devices. Without independent certification (CE, etc.), this approach seems to carry non-trivial risks.

I made it using a wallbox electronic package from evalbo for the Type 2 plug that goes into the bike, and an EV electronic package (just a PCB) from evalbo for the Type 2 plug that plugs into a charging station.

Very likely the most compact EVSE out there. But as it stands, it’s indoor-only. Any plans to go commercial and make it IP67 or the like?

Thanks, but I have a brickless brick ;) in mind. Yours does look fairly compact indeed, but it still takes up more space and adds more weight than a truly brickless EVSE. The unit offered on AliExpress appears to do exactly what I am looking for; however, given the lack of documentation and real-world user experience, I do not feel comfortable trusting it.

Thanks for the clarification — I agree these devices are not "chargers" in the strict sense; the actual charger is on the bike, and this is an EVSE supplying AC and handling the signaling.

What prompted my question is a specific design difference. Most portable Type-2 EVSEs have a fairly bulky in-line control box between plug and cable, typically around 20 × 10 × 5 cm (8 × 4 × 2 in), which adds both volume and weight when traveling. The Romada appears to be the first design I've seen where all control electronics are integrated directly into the plug head, with no separate in-line box at all.

The obvious advantage is reduced size and weight in luggage. My hesitation is therefore not about AC charging per se, but about build quality, protection, and compliance, given the complete lack of documentation or independent testing. Any real-world experience with this specific unit would be very helpful.

Or, if anyone is aware of a similar concept or product from a reputable manufacturer, I would be very interested to hear about it.

Hi everyone,

Does anybody here happen to own one of these Romada 3.5kW/16A Compact Type 2 chargers? (https://aliexpress.com/item/1005010017541800.html)

It seems to be very compact and lightweight—potentially a good solution for traveling in areas where fast chargers are scarce. However, I'm unsure if it’s legit or compliant with necessary safety standards. I can't find any tests or reviews and there's no documentation at all from the manufacturer or seller, just the few pictures on Aliexpress. Despite the low price, I’m hesitant to buy one due to the risk of bricking my SS9.

Any experiences would be greatly appreciated.
