Zero Motorcycles Forum | 2013+ / Re: DSR/X range

In the southern United States where I live we have a lot of level 2 charging stations that can deliver 11 kw to my DSR/X with the rapid charger but the problem is in the hot summer time it’s easy to reach the high battery shutdown temperature of of 120 degrees f and the charging stops. So in the cooler months I look for the higher capacity charging stations but in the summer I don’t.

I have added the rapid charger to my DSR/X  and am happy with it. There are a lot of 48 amp level 2 chargers as well as 80 amp where I ride. Tesla has added a lot of there universal wall chargers in the last 12 months. These are public and the price is all over the place because it’s set by the site host. Must use the Tesla app to start the charge.I have also noticed the Ford dealerships around here are building public access charging with DC but more importantly 80 amp level 2 for me. Make sure you purchase an 80 NACS to J1772. I had a problem with the charging being reduced due to handle overheating with the 48 amp unit I had. Purchased the A2Z 80 amp adapter and problem solved.

I had the Rapid Charger installed on my DSR/X this past February. All was good until it got hot outside. The battery charging will shutdown when the battery internal temperature reaches 122 degrees f. If I change in the sun after a long ride I  get shutdowns but if the bike is in the shade it will charge all the way up without overheating. This is probably why they have the charging curve the way they do. In the sun the skin temperature of the black battery case reaches 130 degrees easily.

Zero is offering a free rapid charger upgrade with all left over 2023 bikes. Sweet deal.

Roman Nedielka ( e.round the world ) has ridden his DSR/X around the world alone without any support. He put about 38,000  km on it in about six months. I ask him about the service and reliability of the bike. He changed the tires, brake pads and belt at 25,000 km. He replaced the headlight at 30,000 km. The only maintenance was simple belt adjustment. I would say it’s a very reliable motorcycle so don’t worry and go ahead and buy the bike. I have 9,500 miles on mine and so far trouble free.

There is also a nonprofit organization called Adapt A Charger funding Level 2 charging at parks , museums, and other public locations coast to coast.

I don’t know what the official Hilton policy will be but they may not be free and therefore public. These universal wall chargers have the magic dock with J1772 and NACS. They also have the ability for the provider to charge a fee. There are four of these above 30 miles from my home that I use on occasion at a hotel and conference center. They charge $0.15 per kWh. If you check your Tesla app under charge your none Tesla you will see them being installed from coast to coast. These have been going in at a rapid pace for about six months.

Most hotels in the south where I live don’t mind none guests charging for free for the time being. I do expect that to change with new equipment installed that allow them to collect money.

AC charging is growing quite well. Many small businesses are adding them to attract customers. All the major hotels are adding them, in fact Hilton purchased 20,000 48 amp / 11 kw universal wall chargers from  Tesla to install at most North American locations. Where I live there are 10 times more locations with AC charging than DC charging. The availability of charging is why I purchased a Zero and not an Energica. Also the DC chargers tend to be located just off the interstate and I prefer to ride the back roads or near small towns.

I had the rapid charger installed on myDSR/X the first week of February and so far I am happy I did. Where I ride I am able to find 48 amp 10 to 11 kw chargers. While it’s not as fast as the Energica with DC charging it’s close. I can charge from 5% to 100% in just over an hour and before it was over two hours. That’s a big difference on a 250 + day ride. I does cost a lot of money and may not be necessary for some people.
I purchased my bike in July 2023 and have just under 10,000 trouble free miles so far. I am very happy with the DSR/X

General Discussion / Re: EV vs new ICE model ranges
« on: December 15, 2023, 08:47:20 PM »
It is true that EV sales in the U.S. have slowed but they are still going up year over year and month over month. In this country EV’S are a political issue and until the 2024 presidential election is over there will be a lot of one sided news. For instance the news is that Ford is cutting their 2024 production by 50% and that’s true but if they produce the approximately 80,000 F150 Lightings in 2024 they are now forecasting ,that’s almost 4 times what they will sell in 2023.

It’s vaporware if it came from Toyota. They don’t build BEV’s. Why would anyone need an EV to go twice as far as an ICE vehicle anyway. Can you imagine the heat generated charging a battery that fast.

General Discussion / Re: Experia versus DSR/X comparison

The review Don is doing on this thread is great real world information. I can only address one of your questions about the DSR/X and that is wind protection and head buffeting. Zero does offer the barn door option windshield but I don’t have it. I am a 5’7” rider and the stock windshield does a good job with smooth air flow, however I was getting just a little too much wind noise and noticed I could lower my head just a little and it would reduce the wind noise. I purchased a small 7” Givi wind deflector that attaches to the top of the windshield and it did the trick. Very smooth airflow and I love it. The upper body wind protection is very good. You do get more wind on your lower legs than you do on a GS. I have only ridden it in a light shower for a few miles and it seems about average protection.

I have found that my DSR/X is getting approximately the range Zero is advertising on the website. I have not really paid a lot of attention to the charging speed because most times I just plug it in when I get home and walk away. Today after a ride I thought I would check the charging speed against the advertised speed on the website. It says it should change from 0% to 95% in 2.0 hours with the standard 6.6 kw charger. I didn’t run it down to 0% but after my 106 mile ride I was down to 9%.

It was about 90 degrees when I started the charging and it was charging at 6.3 kw. My voltage here is about 230 and is probably why it wasn’t at the advertised 6.6 kw.
At the one hour mark the bike was at 55% and the charging rate was down to 4.9 kw.
At the one and a half hour mark the bike was at 73% and holding steady at the 4.9 kw rate.
At an hour and fifty five minutes it was at 90% and charging at 4.8 kw.
At the two hour mark it was at 92% and still charging at 4.8 kw.
It reached the 95% mark in two hours and six minutes. But it continued to change another five minutes as the cells balanced and the charging was tapering down until it shutdown at rate of 1.5 kw.
So all in 9% to 95 % in two hours and eleven minutes on a 90 degree day. I expect the quoted time on the website is at a cooler temperature.  I think the advertised specs are pretty close to real world.

WOW sorry to hear this. I have put 4500 miles on my DSR/X since mid July and the software has been solid without any failures. I did see a warning pop up the other day when I turned on the key and put up the side stand and turned on the kill switch before the screen had booted up. It said something about throttle position. I turned the key off and back on and gave it time to boot up and the warning was gone. There are no faults logged in the system.

The bike is great for me and I absolutely love riding it. It looks like I made the right choice. By the way I  placed an order for the Experia just after the order board opened but canceled it in late February due to production delays. Still waiting an electric motorcycle I decided to give the Zero a try. So far so good.

General Discussion / Re: More EV battery vaporware!
« on: September 21, 2023, 09:07:42 AM »
I watch a YouTube video of someone who attended the battery equipment manufacturer trade show in Detroit. This trade show had exhibitors that sold the equipment to the people that make batteries in high volume for not only the EV market but consumer electronics as well. He ask them if anyone was selling equipment to make solid state batteries and could not find a single supplier. So if no one is selling the equipment to make solid state batteries in volume it may be a long time before we see them.
