Tech Help / Re: 2013 DS Battery meltdown
« on: April 24, 2025, 04:38:56 PM »
I thought my post to say replacing a headlight bulb instead of DC DC convertor was helpful wen my 12v system failed. Ill say again there are no dealers here otherwise I wud hav got the bike checked out. But learned my lesson..I will go for a Chinese electric scooter as thats all we can get in this backward country. But if anyone looking for Zero DS parts let me know.

I still find it hard to believe no one else here has had a similar failure. Unless they left this grp after a failure as they would never own a Zero again. Sad thing is I really miss the bike..if only someone in SA could repair it. No surprise Im not getting any help from Zero.

Im surprised no one has any comments on this..pretty lame I think. Guess no one knows what to say..am I the only one to experience this??? U shud all realise u have potential time bombs in ur garages. Park them outside under a fire blanket or get smoke detectors if u dont want to lose ur house. This bike was never abused off road or fast charged or anything that cud cause an issue..wasnt plugged in at the time. Bike was just standing there in the middle of the night.  Who knows wat gases I breathed in getting the damn thing out the garage.

Tech Help / 2013 DS Battery meltdown
« on: January 31, 2025, 11:26:34 PM »
Hi guys
I awoke Wed morning to an extremely bad smoke filled garage, it was so bad I could not see my hand in front of my face. The Zero batt had started smoldering but luckily didnt ignite. Got all the vehicles outside and fire dept arrived after neighbours thought my house was on fire. Im now sitting with a useless bike with probably good parts on it but no batt. I know Zero did a recall on 2012 models for fire issues so do I have recourse with them? Im sitting in South Africa with no dealer support so bit clueless wat to do with it. I must say last 3 weeks its only been charging to 10 bars not 11 which i thought was normal battery degredation. Bike has done 40000km.

I only trickle charge off house power..no fast charging..also hardly any freeway riding. Try look after batt best I can. No dealers in SA so if it goes im gonna be stuck.

Hi Guys
Can anyone give some insight into battery life on the Zeros. Is it true these batteries good for 400000km?. Someone must have replaced a battery..how much mileage..years service you get?
So far I have 25000km and 1450 charge cycles.

Tech Help / Re: Gauge cluster goes on and off intermittently
« on: December 03, 2022, 03:06:01 PM »
Just an update on this. The 12v system was off for about a month after which I changed headlight bulb to LED and actually ride with it off most the time as I only ride in daylight. So 12v has stayed on for last 5 months without issues. I suspect old headlight bulb maybe overloaded 12v system. Dunno but it seems fine now.

Ok so that might be a bad idea. Im still thinking it could be connection issue as it still switches on intermittently but stays off most the time. Something I havent mentioned is this 12v system was modified as the bike was a demo model for the local police. So lights and hazard switches were moved to top of tank area, blue lights and a siren was also added. As someone has messed with the 12v system I shud maybe go through all those connections thats been fiddled.

Ive been thinking I like the idea of installing a 12v battery which I can charge separately as its bound to give more range (Im charging batteries all the time on my ICE bikes). Anyone done this before..is there a procedure or is simply a case of replacing the converter with a battery using negative and positive which connect to the converter??

If it is the convertor can they not be repaired?

So the 12v system worked couple months ok but then completely shut off last 2 weeks which really seems like bad connection somewhere. On investigation found bad connection in instrument cluster and got it working. But problem soon returned..found the relay in the charge circuit is tripping so still fault finding. If it is the convertor will fitting a 12v batt last long enough for riding?..im presuming nothing is charging it wen riding.

This problem went away for about 3 months. Thought was ok but today its suddenly back. Got no backup here in SA..can anyone guide me where to start checking and must the bike be made safe first? I would think its a connection problem as it switches on and off all the time.

Tech Help / Gauge cluster goes on and off intermittently

Hi
This is a 2013 DS model. After 7000km trouble free riding its got an issue. The gauge cluster switches off so no speedo..rev counter..SOC..lights..horn or indicators but still have drive. Its doing it intermittent off and on while riding. Seems like a contact issue. Can anyone point me in the right direction to troubleshoot?
