General Discussion / Sizing a Hub Motor for a Vintage Metal Scooter
« on: December 24, 2022, 11:05:15 PM »
Hi:
I'm trying to determine the correct kw motor for a vintage scooter I'm considering as an EV conversion project. It weighs 340 lbs and originally had a 175 cc motor. A 12 inch QS-motor wheel would give me approximately the same diameter rear wheel, but they come in sizes from 3-12kw. I'm looking for consistent 40mph with occasional 50-55mph performance. I've seen various formulas to calculate speed (for example, https://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=79178) but they don't factor in real world weight and performance requirements enough to make me feel comfortable.

I'm using an 8kw hub motor on a microcar  that I converted and I'm happy with the performance. That weighs in around 600lb. I don't want to "leave wattage on the table" if you know what I mean. I've attached pictures of similar scooters and car for a frame of reference. thanks Shawn

The throttle lets you go both forward and reverse. Very handy.

Buy Sell Trade / [SOLD] Vectrix VX-1 for Sale near Boston

Hi:
I purchased this scooter from the original owner with 1400 miles in the fall of 2019. My intention was to convert the non-functioning battery pack to Lithium, but post-Covid my priorities have changed.  I have assembled all of the software, manuals, etc. CAN-BUS cable, diagnostic software, and trickle charger.  It is in excellent condition except for the NiMh battery pack and the throttle grip which has become sticky (both typical problems with these bikes).

Included with the sale:
•   Instruction Manual
•   Dealer Service Manual
•   Upgraded software from Dugas Engineering (on a USB)
•   Can-BUS adapter cable and diagnostic software
•   Trickle charger
Bike comes with the manufacturer’s certificate of origin (title was not required where the original owner lived).

This is a great EV project as the conversion to LI is well documented on the internet and YouTube.

I’m asking $1,200. If you have any questions please email me.

Thanks

I'm thinking of importing 24 100ah LiFePO4 cells from China to power a trike. I know i have an $800 threshold before US customs kicks in. I checked the Harmonization schedule and it doesn't look like there is an additional duty.   Has anyone done such a purchase and is there anything I'm missing? I don't want to be surprised and blow my budget.

thanks
Shawn
