Title: Is the CEO lying again about deliveries?
Post by: HoodRichOG on December 19, 2019, 10:17:39 PM
Recent article: https://electrek.co/2019/12/19/lightning-strike-electric-motorcycle-deliveries-secret-project/

"While Lightning originally expected deliveries of the Carbon Edition Strike to begin in July, they were only slightly delayed with the first deliveries beginning in September. Since then, Richard tells us that the company has continued making deliveries of more Carbon Edition bikes to early reservation holders."

Has anyone seen or heard of a delivery of a carbon edition strike?

Lying...or just taking liberties with the language? "Deliveries" is plural, of course, but could mean as few as two. "...has continued making deliveries of more Carbon Edition bikes to early reservation holders." is also very ambiguous. Again, the "deliveries" only means at least two, and "continued" doesn't have any timeframe at all associated with it. "Continuous" means "a delivery every six months" for some boutique companies. The one thing for sure is that he's outright saying nothing but Carbon Edition bikes have been delivered, at all.

"...continued producing and delivering its first production electric motorcycle, the LS-218." Well, it's just semantics at this point.

You're not impressing anybody, Richard. We want to love your bikes, we really do. We just haven't seen anything to love yet.

The one Strike that was confirmed as leaving the factory was not a Carbon Edition, as it had a 10kWh battery, no CCS, and no ABS.

Doug S quote: You're not impressing anybody, Richard. We want to love your bikes, we really do. We just haven't seen anything to love yet.

That's 100% my feelings.

How in the world does someone who seems smart enough to do this and has an overall win at Pike's Peak, act so shady with this bike?
If he got screwed over with his China connections say that.  The Carbon bike always had too good to be true specs and I can't imagine why someone would make those claims without having at least one to show off.

In the Bay Area, "fake it till you make it" is taken to extremes and accepted because there is so much wealth and this is an innovative hardware startup.

It's not just the Strike. There's zero evidence any "production" LS-218 every got delivered to an actual customer either, ever. There was a claim that there was a delivery in 2014, however photos of a bike that looks identical showed up in a couple of "factory tours", and no person ever owned up to owning it, riding it, or ven just knowing who owns it. People in the field aren't that shy (-:
Another 1-off customized LS-218 (non-stock motor & partia lfairing) was delivered to a person who posted here, for drag racing.
A South African dealership claims to have paid fully for an LS-218, but never received one.
That's it. No other owner's postings, forum discussions of actual bikes, motojournalists test rides during the past few years etc.

Delivered to whom? I can't believe 17 people have received their bikes and not one of them has said one word here on this forum. Then again, he didn't say 17 people had bikes, he just said they've delivered 17 bikes.

I'm not believing a word of it until somebody, just a single OTC customer, says they've received a bike.

I wonder what percentage of electric bike owners even know about this forum, or know, but have found no reason to join it.

No, not what the article says; it says that Hatfield says they did. Not the same thing.
Notice that article was authored by Alan Cathcart, who also authored the only road test review(s) of Lightning bikes. While he was certainly a very respected motojournalist, he's in his late 70s or early 80s by now (his exact bio details are never published, and published ones conflict) and mostly retired. He's the only motojournalist to publish any actual experiences with Lightning bikes -- odd both in ltself, and also because he lives in the UK and travels  little anymore.
The only source for that article is Lightning itself, so not taking it at face value. At least several of the people who've supposedly received Strikes would have made it known on public media and/or told fellow riders about it. E-motorcyclists are a small community, and it wouldn't have remained a secret (and there wouldn't be any reason for it -- Lightning needs the credibility, badly).

Lightning is a genius company. They got Electrek and motor journalists to post whatever they say, over and over again. It's mind boggling. No one asks hard hitting questions? Interviews "customers" (that no one's seen, besides a guy with a prototype LS?). It's like we live in Bizarro World.

Even in the last week they're still regurgitating what Lightning says. https://ww.electrek.co/2019/12/19/lightning-strike-electric-motorcycle-deliveries-secret-project/

Forum member Sam Baker is still planing on test riding one mid January.  That's the only source I believe at this point.
For his sake I hope it's everything Lightning said it would be, for the price they said it would be.

Elektrek isn't a source for anything, and have nothing to do with journalism. All they do is republish press releases, mostly by Tesla. Their "writers" know nothing about EVs.

Not quite.
17 is infinitely as many times as 0.
The unbelievable part isn't the number. It's that out of such a number, quite a few would be posting about it in forums, publishing first-ride videos, journalists would have reported on it etc.
And in e-motorcycle terms, the number isn't that low for a couple of months of initial production, esp. if ramping up.
The largest player worldwide by far is Zero, who make, by all sources (they don't publish official numbers), a low-four-digits of bikes per year; it was probably 2K last year, maybe twice that one of the preceding years.
Noone else makes more than hundreds per year.
e-scooters & e-mopeds are a whole different story: In China alone, the market is ~15M/year, and India is even larger.

You didn't miss anything. The article read like a promotional for Lightning, rather than anything useful for anyone interested in the Strike.  Reading the article led me to believe that the author was riding that blue prototype that showed up in the drone video last spring, shortly after the Strike was announced. I also got the feeling that he was paid by the word.   ::)

Looks like another white Strike was delivered.

Again with the J1772 port. So it's not a "Carbon".

Looks less like a prototype now, the motor casings are cast and not CNC like the first delivery.

Check the Lightning FB group for more details.

Also check out this sweet dash and CycleAnalyst showing the pack at 128 vdc. Do the math on it for the voltage of the cells and it turns out the delivered Strike operates at 150 vdc, meaning incapable of CCS charging which has a minimum of 200. Allowing it to use CCS will mean:

- A new charge inlet

- charge controller

- Complete re-wiring of the battery pack (or, more likely, an entirely new pack)

- replace the level 2 onboard charger that is outputting 150 vdc to a unit that outputs 300 vdc

Apparently it's a $1500 upgrade so that's a heck of a value!

It's hard to tell, but it looks cast since it's not shiny CNC milled like the previous Strike.

Either way, it looks like they delivered two Strikes, but it's unclear if these are real "production" bikes.

I agree the Carbon Strike would need a totally different battery/charge controller/wiring. Still waiting for evidence of a carbon Strike existing, whether in prototype form or not.

I'm also told that the rippling or uneven/non-straight lines in the bodywork are because it is hand laid carbon. They appear to be quite proud of that.

Also check out this sweet dash and CycleAnalyst showing the pack at 128 vdc.

I'm not sure where you're seeing that. Are you interpreting the "PK 128.29" as referring to pack voltage? Since the entry immediately after that is "AVG 3.6", I'm interpreting it as "peak", not "pack". Charging current, maybe? Discharge current?

It's hard to imagine the bikes that can DC charge and the bikes that can't are configured completely differently in terms of battery voltage. They do use the same motors, we know.
Title: Re: Is the CEO lying again about deliveries?
Post by: MVetter on January 14, 2020, 07:09:33 AM
AVG 3.6 was the individual cell voltage. Because he's low on charge. They're seriesed up.

128.29 / 3.56 = 36.03...

Ok, 36 cells. Those cells have a max of 4.15 vdc

4.15 x 36 = 149.4 vdc aka ~150 vdc

150 volts

Yes, I can't see it either. That would make the design work very complex, SW would need to be different for each case, lots more testing, different thermal envelopes when charging/discharging; not to mention different conductor thicknesses for different amperages. And the cheaper bikes with no DC charger and lower system voltage would need the more expensive cables... Unless all the bikes get the thick cables which isn't weight- or cost-efficient.
If they're doing this, it's not series production.

The thing that jumped out at me was the two battery voltages mentioned: 150 VDC and 300 VDC. That would splain why CCS charging is available on the upgraded models but not on the base model....and that it can't be retrofitted to the base model. That's critical information to many potential customers.

Oh hey!  Yep, that's me.  Richard took me on a test ride and allowed me to shoot video of it (I've started editing but it'll take a while to make it fancy).  I've heard they do test rides every Friday, so if you're interested, call them up to book one.

I was very impressed with the build quality and performance, even on the demo bike (something they use for testing) and even with the lower power.  For a small company like this to bring out something that fills the gap between Zero and Energica so perfectly, I think they're worth supporting.

I can't speak to the number of deliveries or where all the owners are, though.  Hopefully some of them share photos or ride stories soon!

They can't hand over bikes until they have an inventory, and that is always a problem for a budding company.  It was quite awhile before Tesla had enough to have full cars in all their shops.

Clearly they haven't run away yet, but I wonder what the holdups are?

In response to the original question, no I don’t think so. When has the CEO quoted numbers delivered?
I went to their shop Tuesday. I spoke to Rich.
They don’t have staff for the social media thing, and perhaps the folks who buy these kinds of motorcycles don’t have an interest in sharing, er showing off, or making public, their expensive toys. Rich did post o FakeBook three weeks ago. The nature of Bookfarce is you have to look every couple hours to stay engaged. Some of us don’t do that... anyhow, that seems to annoy some, to the point of speculating (er, making shit up) and posting it on YouTuber.
You folks who have or have ridden these bikes know the truth.

I pressed Rich for production numbers and he would not tell. Seriously, for a limited production company trying to defend against trolls there is no point in responding.

As soon as I finish this I am going to ride my Alta.

I do recall a publication where Lightning made a claim of 17 Strikes delivered. If you would like I will attempt to find and link it for you. So far the internet has been able to confirm 2 deliveries of Strikes, both the white "Carbon" edition, neither of which have Carbon specs (CCS charging as one of many examples). One of them actually operates at 150vdc with the standard edition battery pack. Other one is unknown.

These are the facts that have surfaced so far.

It was that New Zealand publication, which was basically a shill piece for Lightning.

The company and supposed owners must be in a secrecy pact.

I've never seen this much silence from a moto company or owners.

First off, Sam glad you enjoyed the bike and I truly hope it all works out best for you and I would love to see even more of the beautiful New Zealand scenery in even longer electric motorcycle trips whatever you decide.

As for info from Lightning I asked very nicely for more information about the bike way back in April on their YT channel.  If he thought I was a troll he needs to go learn about business.  If someone shows interest in your new product and asks just for basic information and a demonstration of that product a true business man embraces that opportunity and does not ignore the request.
Richard Hatfield has made it difficult to support or recommend his company due to his, just odd, actions.

As I joked (but kind of serious) with Sam, Lightning should just give him a bike and let him handle their PR.  His videos are far better than anything they have put out in the past.

Haha thanks.  I'm tryin!  Hopefully my Strike test ride will help give people an idea of what these bikes are like.  I wish I could have spent more time on it, gone faster, tested the range, plugged it in, tested the 0-60 time, etc etc... but I'm sure someone else will do that in the future.  If I can find a way to get a bike into NZ, I'll do all that stuff myself  ;D

That's the only problem I'm running into at the moment.  The bikes don't have ABS, and that's a legal requirement for all imported motorcycles in this country (also all of Europe).  I'll say this with 100% honesty.. if I was living in California, I'd already own one.

And I guess I am a shill.  I'm just not a paid shill lol.

Yeah for sure.  I've been going back to the shop about every 9 months and every time I'm surprised to see the amount of stuff they're working on.  This time I saw way more Strikes, Sparcs, and other projects in the works that haven't been announced yet.

I talked to Richard about the PR problem.  It's that difficult balance between sharing too much about the production setbacks and delays, so people think you don't know what you're doing... and not sharing enough, so people question whether bikes are even being made.  The only way to find out is to go to the shop and get your mind blown  ;D and that happens every time I visit.

That said, hopefully some owners get more active online to put everyones' minds at ease.

But when is Lightning going to set up a retail, distribution, parts and servicing program?  Without that, they can't expect to sell very many bikes.

Electric Motorsport tried to sell their bikes directly from their "factory" in Oakland in 2008, but they couldn't make it work out and had to start selling them through small brick and mortar shops.  Eventually, they changed the brand name to Native as the number of retail outlets expanded a bit.  But then Brammo came out with the Enertia and tried selling them out of Best Buy stores. That pretty much put an end to Native sales, soon followed by Best Buy giving up. But then Brammo created a retail and distribution network, which lasted for a few years, until they threw in the towel and sold out to Victory. And you know how that ended up.   :(

Not an easy business to be in.   :'(

Zero also tried to sell direct in the early years and that didn't work out for them either. At least they figured this out before it was too late and decided to sell through dealerships. The fact that Lightning would ignore a request from an established dealership that already sells Zero and Energica is not a good sign. They want to sell thousands of their bikes yet seem to have no interest in getting their bikes out in the press and to dealerships. They claim to have a factory that is producing bikes but where is the inventory that is being produced from these factories going? Energica hasn't been around for very long either but they have figured out pretty quickly how to get their bikes out in the press and to establish dealerships to sell them. No question the Strike is a great bike but until Richard decides to use commonly accepted business practices to market and sell them I don't see Lightning being anything more than the boutique bike shop they have been for many years.

If they don't have enough bikes yet, they can't sell through dealers.  Yes, they should reply with a form letter admitting this, but they clearly don't have the legal/sales department they really need.  But that's not uncommon to small businesses and startups.  Those things all cost time and money, and the supply of the former is finite, even if the latter isn't.

ultrarnr - Good comments, Thanks. Interesting perspective that rings true.

....... Lightning should just give him a bike and let him handle their PR.  His videos are far better than anything they have put out in the past.

NEW2elec - You're quite correct. Have Sam Baker be the point for Lightning. I've viewed his videos - always good. I met Sam not long ago. I enjoyed the short discussion with him and his lovely wife.
Things I've read about Lightning to-date are quite unnerving.

Lightning's unusual bike reveal last year - I found it odd when I heard attendees were not allowed to get close to the displayed models. Contrast that to CalMoto Livermore's open house last  month. Energica was there with their newest models. Attendees were allowed to touch the bikes, and even sit on them. Stefano and Laurence were there. If a question was asked, answers were quickly provided. No fluff, just hard answers.

Haha thanks for the kind comments  ;D If I still lived in California I'd be bugging Richard for rides every week and shooting tons of videos on those things.  It's crazy how much innovation is going on in the bay area.  I really miss it.

I agree 100% that this is still a boutique shop.  They're a small operation that's trying to ramp up, and it's a slow process.  Once their factory in China can start pumping out what they've been making in California, they'll be able to sell through dealers.. but not yet.

But building a dealership network is not an easy process as Energica is finding out in the US. For Lightning to ignore a dealer with Zero/Energica sales and wants to sell Lightning is an extremely poor move. It doesn't matter that bikes aren't available right now. Richard should have responded to the request and developed the relationship so when bikes are available they are immediately shipped to the dealer. And Lightning's first dealer needs to be on the east coast and the dealer I am referring to is in Raleigh, NC, a perfect location. I am sure myself and many other riders on the east coast would love to test ride a Strike but there is no way I am going to buy an airline ticket and fly out to California just to ride one. But Lightning is going to face a much tougher challenge finding dealers than Zero or Energica ever had because of all of the issues that have been discussed in this forum.  After all potential dealers read these posts to. And sometimes the person who gave a company life is not the best person to lead the company into the next stage. If you look at Zero one of the guys who started the company got booted out and looking back it seems like it was the right move. I don't think Richard is the right guy to lead Lightning into prosperity. No question he knows how to design a great electric motorcycle. But it takes more than motorcycle design skills to run a motorcycle company. It takes many other skill sets that must be hired. There was a post on the advrider forum some time ago about a web site called Glassdoor and what former employees think about working there. Not good. And it does help explain many of the missteps that have been discussed here. I wish Lightning the best of luck, it would be great to see them grow and become competition for Zero and Energica as all of us would benefit from that. But I am extremely skeptical that that is going to happen as long as Richard is in charge of the company.

Well I know Team Powersports in Raleigh has been a pro electric bike dealer for some time and is close to your heart (and house) but he'd have to go west coast to start with.
The elephant in the room to me was when he was on stage with Harlan from Hollywood Electrics so we know they had to have met and talked at least about the possibility of selling through HE.  The fact that there has never been any mention of that pairing tells me something
was not right to not get that deal done.

The other good choice though out of CA is of course AF1.  The way they sell Zero parts directly to customers would be needed if Lightning really planed to sell bikes nation wide.

If they don't have at least a few dealers on board the best they can ever hope for is being a CA boutique shop.  Maybe that's good enough for them.  Who knows?

NEW2elec, I agree AF1 Racing would be another good choice for a Lightning dealership and being in Texas they can cover the central part of the country. Then have TPS cover the east coast. At least to start out these two dealerships are key to getting sales outside of CA.  I have talked with some of the guys at Team Power Sports about Lightning and they are tracking all of the missteps that have been discussed in this forum. It is making it increasingly unlikely that they would become a dealer but maybe someday an agreement could be reached.

At this point it looks very much like Lightning's best bet would be to attempt to sell themselves and their tech to Zero, and give Zero a mostly-developed supersports range ready-made.

Cas :)

I am not too sure that Richard wants to sell his "tech" ideas.  He certainly has had plenty of opportunity to do so during the past 10 years that he has been developing his motorcycle designs.  I think he likes to talk, dream and tinker, but mass manufacturing motorcycles doesn't seem to be his thing.

That would be the idea I think - sell the plans to Zero and let them figure out how to mass produce it, then enjoy a happy life designing new ones and tinkering. Maybe.

May be that Zero at the moment is occupied enough with the production of their own new bike(s).
As far as I was told, they were at least last year with the SR/F. The SR/S is standing in the line; it will be interesting how successfull that will be.
(I'd really be intersted in their selling figures ...)

We have interesting E-motorcycle times ahead ... Lightning, BMW, ....

All I can say is, I hope Lightning is successful, because at the moment there isn't another bike that feels like this.  It fits right between a Zero SR and an Energica (and I don't mean an SR/F).  The Strike has good power, but isn't heavy.  It has the perfect sportbike riding position.  If for some reason Lightning closes tomorrow, I'll be sad, because nobody else is building a bike like that.

Bump.

What's the deal with Lightning these days?

I saw they were developing some sort of ridiculously looking enclosed motorcycle nobody needs or asked for.

Any news on the Strike, or did they call it quits after delivering a few half baked prototypes to customers?

I posted an update in the public Facebook but I'll repeat it here. I went to Mike Corbin's factory in Hollister a couple days ago, and Mike informed me that Lightning was moving in to his factory. Apparently the people that own the building Lightning is renting in San Jose are selling it. As such Lightning is now renting a portion of the Corbin factory for their operations. I personally witnessed 3 people setting up shelving and attempting to figure out the best spot to set up CNC machines. There were also a handful of bikes in the corner which I did not approach or get a closer look at.

Thanks for the update. I wish Lightning actually gave updates about their production but I guess they don't actually care about selling bikes.

Also surprising to see Lightning not running out of money yet. Seems like they have a hell of a runway...
