If you recall about 3 months ago I came out to my zero after leaving it in the direct sun and the display totally quit. I had it replaced.
Today I charged it for 90m in the sun and when I came back it looked as you see it in the photo...a big black crescent from the top. I rode it for 20m and it gradually faded back to normal thank goodness.
I almost am always parked in shade and hardly ever charge outdoors, but this is the second time that leaving it in the sun has messed with it.
Anyone else have similar issues? This is my second display:(

Not only will the sun overheat the LCD, which can cause the contrast adjustment to go out of whack resulting in black areas on the screen like you're showing, eventually the UV will also turn the display yellow. You really should keep the display covered when parked in the sun.
I've been putting my gloves over the display instead of storing them in the trunk when I park outside. I worried originally about someone stealing the gloves, but it hasn't happened yet...they're not too noticeable sitting there. Of course the direct sun isn't very good for the gloves either, but I'd much rather replace a pair of gloves than the display.

Carry a motorcycle sunshade. (https://www.cycleshade.com/p7IGM_images/fullsize/10lgswlgg_fs.jpg) They fold quite small. There are many different sizes types. I use one for when I am charging out in the sun.

Maybe just make a small custom cover you can put over just the display? Anyone you know who could knit one? :D
To prevent yellowing, it might be possible to use 303 on it. That stuff is great.

I had a similar problem with the display on my 2014 S when it was new. But eventually it seemed to go away. Which is something that I can't explain. ???

Would a tinted windscreen provide enough shade?

The same thing happened to my screen. I was charging outside, and there was nowhere I could put the bike in shade.

Get one of those white surgeon shoe covers. The fit sound be pretty good and the elastic will keep it in place. I have a box of the blue ones they may work even better. Wads up to the size of a gumball.

I find it pretty ridiculous that we have to find a workaround or a cover because a 20k bike can't be left outside for a few hours.

I put a white wash rag over mine when leaving it facing the sun. I try to park not facing the sun otherwise

Hey, leave a $1000 smartphone on your dashboard in the sun on a scorching day and see how well that does. It is one of the drawbacks to certain modem electronics.

I tend to agree with the sentiment that I should not have to worry about 2 hours in the sun. I have left my iPhone in the sun longer and no problem. I seem to remember the ads about “torture testing†the SRF in Death Valley. Did they drive around with surgeon show covers on the display?
I emailed zero with photos we shall see what they say.

It does seem like a whiff since we get lots of intense sun here in Santa Cruz. Probably their displays weren't delivered until later in the development cycle and just aren't up to spec. UI pieces tend to arrive later in dev cycles.
Downside of a fancy display, I guess. I hope they get this fixed at the supplier level or they'll be doing alot of replacements!

Is it a temporary problem or does the display issue remain after the screen cools down? I agree that if the screen remains obscured the next day, Zero has a real problem and one that is likely not going to be cheap to fix, especially if it is a common issue. But perhaps it only is occurring on a few defective displays? This is the first complaint that I have heard of so far.

This time it went away and only partially obstructed the view, but the first time the whole display went out permanently and I had to get it replaced.

I just replaced mine, for a waterproof problem.
On the new one, the label says "REV 04", the first one was "REV 01".
It seems that they have troubles with dash and trying to fix it...
