Title: SRF app/electronics thread, issues etc
Post by: gstrub on July 17, 2019, 07:24:03 PM
Hey all,

I’ve been playing with this SRF app and display for a while and have had a few issues, all minor, but wanted to know if anyone else had the same. Also I figured a thread that people could list these items would be helpful.

1. Not really an app issue, but if I turn the bike off in sport mode, it reverts back to street mode when I turn it back on. Anyone know if this feature can be disabled?

2. Remote connect via cellular: this has been unreliable. Sometimes it works, sometimes it just keeps searching. I don’t know if my bike has a poor cellular connection...is there a way to view the connection strength, like bars on a phone?

3. On the app, I can’t turn on or off the charge target option, even though there is a slide bar for it (it is grayed out). I can adjust the target, but it only goes to 95%, so if charge target is on, I can’t turn it off without doing it on the dash.

4. For the custom gauges, I don’t have the option for battery or motor temp in panels C or D, I can only put the temp in A or B. Seems weird.

Can’t think of anything else now!

Right now I can only tell you that mine remembers the mode last used and when I turn it on, it is always what it was before.
Remote connect seems to work fine (I just tried now and it connected fine with the bike in the garage) and I have received two OTA firmware upgrades so far.
I will check this afternoon when I get home about items 3 and 4.

If you haven't done so yet, I recommend you un-install the app and delete your bluetooth connection, restart your phone and try again.
I have had luck doing this on other devices that were acting-up. Worth trying.

1. Mine remembers the mode.  Rain. Street. Eco. Sport.

2. I assumed that the app connected to the bike over bluetooth.  It certainly only connects when within bluetooth range.  Here at work, the bike is parked 2 floors down in the garage.  No connectivity.  At home, the bike is parked in the garage under my bedroom.  It connects and tells me at 2AM that the target charge has been met.  I had to turn off notifications.

3. I am not quite sure what you are doing.  I could not ride the bike today so I can't try it out.  You did turn on these features on the bike, yes?

4. I was pretty happy with the existing gauge setup.  I turned on power and torque but could not see what they were trying to tell me so I turned them back off.

An odd thing happened the other day.  My time was off.  I set the time when I got the bike.  It has been accurate.  Then I hopped on the bike and saw that it was off by something like 1:20.  I had been in playing with the gauges but I do not think I modified the time.  I scratched my head for a  while, reset the time again and rode off.

Mine always remembers the mode I left it in.  Not that I change it much.
I also had to turn notifications off on the app.  I have my bike on a schedule, so it sends notifications when i'm sleeping.  Would be nice if you could pick what notifications you get, or when those notifications can send.  The charging notifications would be really handy if i'm plugged in somewhere out and about, but not at 4am.

I noticed the charge target thing.  Annoying, but there is a really easy way around it.  If you plug in the bike, once it powers up and shows you its going to schedule charge or go to target, you can turn the key on and select override and it will start charging right away and charge to 100%.

The time issue, mine does that from time to time.  I've noticed it being messed up after it charges, I go somewhere and when I key it on the next time, the time is correct.

My bluetooth connection to the bike is weird sometimes, but the remote query I haven't had trouble with.

It also looks like you can't do a 'record ride' unless the zero app is on the screen?  I turned it on, and then opened Waze.  It didn't record anything.  Or was it just because I opened another app that uses the GPS?

Here is one that had me scratching my head:
As of yesterday evening the odometer on the bike shows 230 miles and I am NOT confusing it with the Trip A or Trip B odometer.
The odometer on the app shows a lot more miles, don't remember exactly now but it was well over 300 miles.

Are the extra miles put at the factory (or dealer) that somehow don't register on the actual odometer but through the app only?
Anybody else have a discrepancy between the two?

I cleared the trip odometers but it did not make any difference.

Mine have always matched.

Mine have always matched.

You must have the bike set to km, not miles as I do.
Just figured it out: the app shows the distance in km, even if you go to settings and choose miles.

My 230 miles is equal to 370 km which is what the app is showing.

A bug to be fixed on the next release, I suppose.

So....

I talked to Zero. They said they think it’s a bad fuse #6. I don’t have any fuses at hone so this will have to wait a day or so.

Incidentally, this only started after I had the display replaced (one day it just totally quit). Zero said this has happened on more than one other SRF.

Anyway I will let you know what happens when I replace the fuse. Right now the display is going back to factory settings every time I turn it off which is super annoying. I am really, really hoping this is just the fuse...having just towed the bike 800 miles round trip to get to dealer and get home with a display that is still misbehaving is frustrating.

Even if it is a fuse, we have to wonder if a short somewhere caused it to blow.

A newer fuse blowing of the correct rating is usually  showing a problem other than the fuse itself. The fuse only did its job by blowing, most likely.

I wonder if the original unit failing was what blew the fuse, and they just didn’t check the fuses after replacing it. It was like this when I picked it up, I just figured it needed the new firmware. I didn’t realize everything was resetting until today.

One particular annoyance is I have to disable the charge target feature on the bike each time I plug it in, with the bike still on then plug it in. Otherwise if I turn it off and plug it in, it defaults to setting the charge target at 95%.

The clock going back to 12pm is also getting old really fast. I would set the clock to “hidden”, but when I turn the bike off and on it comes right back:/ usually with the incorrect time.

Ah the joys of a brand new model. Worth it for the ride though, just hope I don’t have to schlep it back, again.

Or perhaps they blew the fuse when they were working on your bike.  Hopefully all you have to do is replace that fuse.

As said before, the original display going bad probably blew the fuse (or it blew while they were troubleshooting it/replacing it)
It is very likely this fuse protects the circuit that maintains a "trickle" power to the system so it does not loose the settings when the bike is powered off.

It's funny how those things are wired: When I was replacing the handlebar on mine, and had all the connectors behind the headlamp disconnected (around six of them) I got an alert from the app that the bike had just been tipped-over.
But it never was tipped. Must have been the lack of power to the component where this sensor lives.

Replaced fuse, problem solved!

Replaced fuse, problem solved!
And hopefully, it stays solved. A fuse blowing every 100 miles is usually a worse problem than a fuse blowing right away, as such intermittents can be tough.

However, I think the odds are quite good that they blew the fuse while working on the bike and your problem is solved for good.

My SR/F remembers the mode but I have the same issue with charge target. Once turned on it won't turn off or go above 95%. Actually I'm OK with that but it is clearly a bug.

So I wish that the New Generation app would have the ability to push a firmware update like the old generation app.  I’ve had the recent update fail on me twice.  Whatever carrier is used for the bike’s cellular signal is very weak in my area.  I can’t get it anywhere near my house so each time I wanted to try to update, I need to ride to where I can get a signal in order for it to download.  Just to get back to my house and find the update fail.  Next time I am going to try to remain in a area where I have a signal and let it run through the update process to see if that makes any difference.  If the cell signal doesn’t get better on the bike, I probably won’t be paying for the service once the free 2 years runs out.  So I hope the app get’s the ability to update otherwise I will have to go to the dealer for every update, definitely a step backwards.

When Zero was updating the firmware (before they started working on the SR/F) for my 2018 S, I would usually get a warning at the end of the 30-minute download that said that the update had failed. But when I tried again it said that my bike had the latest firmware update. So it is possible that your update was installed correctly and the warning at the end of the process was wrong.  ??? You might want to check again to verify if the download took or not.

I wish there was a easy way to determine what firmware was currently in your bike.  As I understand, the only way would be through some method with a serial cord and computer.  Not even sure you can still do this with the SR/F Cypher lll system.   It would be great if like your cell phone you can look up system settings on your bike’s display and it would give the current versions of all the software on the bike.  My understanding is the Firmware indicated on the display is only the display firmware so I do not think that is helpful.  I looked in the error log on the display and it showed I believe Error 8 Firmware update failed each time.  The only way I know to determine if the update actually failed is to bring it where it can get a cell signal and see if new update is available which I did after the first failed attempt.

My SR (no F) says (on Zero the app under "firmware update") I need a dealer download because I am on version 14, but should be on version 22. Could it be the same on the SR/F that it only shows when you need an update?  And if it shows nothing, you're up to date?

No, I don’t think that functionality is built into the app yet.  Both times, I never got any indication in the app that a firmware update is available.  It only showed up on the bikes display.  The area on the old app under support for firmware update is not in the new app.  Hopefully they will build it into new app and not just rely on the cellular update process.

Assuming the cellular connection is working, do you have all the same functionality of the App as if it were connected via Bluetooth?

No, cellular is pretty limited.  Just bike location and charge state/status, you also get notifications (charge complete, bike tipped over, etc.).
