Title: Anything new in 2019 for Energica?
Post by: NEW2elec on April 07, 2019, 07:36:35 AM
Well title says it all, I haven't seen any news on their website or any 2019 bikes listed on Cycle Trader.
I know their big focus right now is on the race series but will the Ego get an upgrade in the near future?

For 2019 bikes they have communicated: 15% faster DC charging, cruise control, traction control, heated grips and more charging options. I have seen these options being installed on 2019 bikes. The pre-2019 bikes will be updated, but with no CC, TC and heated grips.

I visited my BMW dealer today and they had a couple of 2019 models on the showroom floor - along with a 2017 bike.  I gather that sales have been slow but steady. With a price under $20K, USD, I would have to say that they are a pretty good value for what you get. Photos attached.

Hi Guys, I just joined the forum. I purchased my EVA 107 in Jan ‘19 and it is a 2019 bike, but I did miss out in the cruise control and heated grips update. I’m working with the the dealer to see if it would be possible to upgrade those systems. The CCS level 3 charging is working very well and I have missed out on firmware updates that should be installed next week. I’ll post any updates after that. Cheers

In the USA, due to a quirk in how VINs are issued, this is a 2020 model. So USA is always one model number ahead of Europe.

What made you decide on your Zero over the Energicas?

I have never even seen any of the Energicas. But they look very interesting to me.

And how long have they had Energica at CalMoto?  The last time I was in CalMoto in Mt. View was around six or seven years ago.

CalMoto is actually very close to US Energica HQ. I've been there and it's a nice display. The bikes really are as clean on the inside as they are on the outside. The biggest thing, for me, is the 20 minute fast charge. I am a fast charge addict.

edit- Don, when Brandon does the Iron Butt run on an Energica he'll pass through Reno. You could meet at the CCS station and take a look at the bike when it happens maybe.

I bought two Zeros, a 2012 S and a 2014 S before Energica ever entered the U.S, market. So it was natural for me to purchase another one as I have never had a problem with any of my bikes and they suit my type of riding. When Energica first entered the U.S. market, they were way too expensive. But when they dropped their prices over $10K, they started to compete with Zero prices and their much higher technical specifications made them a good value.

However, I found that the Energica models just had too much of everything, except range, for my needs.  Mostly too much weight, too much power, too much speed, too top heavy and too complicated for my utility-type of usage. All I need is something to get me down the road around the area and that can be charged overnight. The Energicas are wonderful motorcycles, just not for me.

Calmoto has been selling the brand for just about three years now. In fact they were selling Energicas before they started selling the BMW C-Evolution scooter.

I might add that I was surprised today to see how high the handlebars were on the SS-9, shown in the photo in my post above.  With a handlebar windshield attached, I bet the bike is quite comfortable to ride.  :)

Sure, if he can let me know when. Plugshare (https://www.plugshare.com/) shows two CCS stations in Reno, both at Save-Marts, one on Plum and the other on Kietzke in the southern part of Reno, and they are fairly close together.

I also see that the CCS stations are evenly spaced between here and  Auburn, CA which would make the Energica a good pick for me. I assume I  will also find it more comfy than the Zero SR/F.

I wish somebody sold the Energicas closer to my locations. I would like to try one out. And I have the room for my 10th motorcycle!

I just installed the Energica SS9 windshield on my bike. I’ll report back here late next week or so on whether or not I notice any difference in range. Since I don’t spend a lot of time at freeway speeds I’ll have to take the longer (distance) way into work to test out freeway comfort and range with the windshield.

Yeah on the test route run he used the one on the South edge of Reno. Also he's altering the route so I don't know if it's going through Reno at this point but if he is I'll definitely let you know when. Here's a timelapse of the 800+ mile test day he did on the Energica. With the state of his broken back there's no way he would be able to do this on an uncomfortable bike; I think you'll find the Esse Esse 9 is definitely the most comfortable of the offerings.

Reno is around 25 seconds in the video I believe.

The Blue EVA EsseEsse9 looks interesting to me. I assume I will find it more comfy than the Zero SR/F (I am a little over six feet tall).

But how is it for comfort? Is any of it adjustable?

What type of maintenance is required that a dealer must do?

What else can you guys tell me about the Energica that's not on their website?  What is the price tag?

I see the largest problem as probably being so few dealers, especially when away for the CA coast. I wonder if there will be more dealers any time soon.

I assume I will have to go quite a ways just to test ride one and then buying one will probably be even a bigger hassle. I also wonder if the Livermore Cal Moto store could get one from their other store in Mt. View.

Any info. you guys can give me about these bikes I will appreciate.

Compared to the SR/F and Eva, the EsseEsse9 is noticeably more comfortable. Compared to our Triumph Trophies though, it’s still nowhere near as comfortable and feels like the smaller bike that it is. Neither the bars, foot pegs, nor seat are adjustable. You would need to swap out the bars and pegs with different pieces to adjust the riding position. You could probably get the seat re-upholstered but given the seat is the charging port cover and doesn’t quickly remove you might have challenges getting an aftermarket seat for it.

The maintenance interval is every 6000 miles (plus the initial 600 mile service) and the electric motor oil as well as the VCU coolant is changed out. Everything else is inspect and replace as needed (brake fluid, brake pads, tires, chain, rear sprocket) plus I’m sure a fork oil change at some point in time like on most bikes.

The base SS9 has the same MSRP as the SR/F Premium and is the most direct competitor performance-wise. The base Eva107 runs $2k more but you get more performance in the form of a 107kw motor instead of the 80kw motor in the SS9. The base Ego is $4k more (I think) than the SS9 but is a sport bike riding position so definitely much more aggressive than the other 3. It has the same motor as the Eva107. All Energicas can be upgraded with cosmetic (carbon fiber panels, color-matched bolt sets), functional (heated grips, windscreen & side cases for the SS9/Eva107), and performance (Öhlins front forks and rear shock) pieces.

Although sister shops, only the Mountain View CalMoto location carries the Energicas. They are looking into adding Energica to their Livermore location if volume increases I think. That being said, they’re pretty flexible about working with you if you need to drop off/pick up the bike at the Livermore location...just don’t be in a rush since they don’t make runs between their shops everyday. Unless you’re riding the Energica to Livermore, Mountain View is only about 35 miles (give or take) away and isn’t that much farther if you’re trailering the bike. There are public L2 and L3 charging options available in Pleasanton if you do have to ride it Mountain View though.

Hope that helps...

Yep, that helps a lot. Thanks.

Does any of  the normal maintenance stuff require a service shop  or is it all stuff I can do myself?

As far as the comfort, FWIW, I can say our TTSEs are not nearly as comfy as my Harley (and that's the only model from Harley that I can stand of the many I have tried).  Ever ride a Zero SR (non-F) or DS? If so, I wonder how those bikes compare with the EsseEsse9. That I can relate to, since I own one of each. I find the Zero stock seats a bit hard, but it's fine from one charge station to the next, which is all that is really needed. I rode my SR from Auburn to charge at Cisco Grove (as I ate a Subway sandwich and sent an email) and from there to Reno without getting tired.  The math tells me I could easily make it without a recharge as at the half way point (near the summit) I have 50% of my charge left indicated by SOC and from there, it is almost all  down hill. But I get range anxiety very easily.

IMO, charge station locations are a lot more important than range on a single charge. If battery is half the size, wait half as long twice as many times. The better charging on the  Energicas is a major plus. But what we really need, IMO, is a lot more charging stations in the middle of nowhere.

The only Zero’s I’ve ridden are the SR/F and the DSR. Those were demo rides but gave me enough seat time to place the EsseEsse9 somewhere between those two in regards to riding position.

I don’t see why you couldn’t do the maintenance yourself except maybe safety concerns. The Energicas are a higher voltage system but if you’re used to working on electrics it may not be an issue. I haven’t seen a service manual advertised anywhere but I haven’t checked with the dealer either since I’m letting them perform all scheduled maintenance while it’s under warranty.

If you’re ever going to be close to Antioch feel free to PM me and I’ll let you take mine for a spin. I’m not comfortable enough with range/planning to try and ride it to Reno yet. ;)

Since I have had my two Zeros, all I have done maintenance-wise is to check the belt and I replaced (and paid for) a new front ABS sensor on my SR while the bike was still under warranty, but I still would rather do it myself and pay than try to hassle with their service. I am several versions behind on my firmware and I never had the  motor commissioning done since purchased new. And they each have around 7,500 miles on them. I have tried a couple of times to get them serviced to no avail. The Zero dealer here in Reno does not yet even have the firmware. But I will take care of it ASAP. Just not possible here in Reno yet. I may have to try Oak Grove Power Sports. But both bikes still ride perfectly and I am not too concerned.

I have also done repairs on my TTSE during the warranty period. I even cut into the cable harness to make a repair when the bike was still under warranty, which voids the warranty on the harness. Not real smart, but easier than dealing with the service when I can make a repair myself the same day and ride. Anyway, that's just me. I prefer to fix things myself, when I can, even when under warranty.

Yes, I have a lot of experience with electronics and high voltages, so that's no issue. I have been into electronics all my life, both as a hobby and professionally. I retired five years ago from the City of San Francisco as an Emergency Radio Systems Technician.  But I am still somewhat new to EVs and have a lot to learn.

You would not have to ride to Reno. We could meet somewhere half way between Antioch and Auburn, CA.  Perhaps Elk Grove Power Sports (https://www.egpowersports.com/), for an example. That's where I purchased my Zero SR.

I normally spend a couple of weeks in Reno and then a week or so at my house in Auburn and I am usually very flexible on when and how long I stay at either place, since I am retired.

I called the shop in Livermore to see what I have to do to buy my new Energica.

I have to go to Mtn. View, CA  to buy the bike and do the paperwork. But after that, they can bring the bike to Livermore and from there, even make arrangements to deliver it to my  Auburn house.

For servicing, they have companies that they recommend who will pick up the bike, bring it to Livermore and from there it will be delivered to Mt. View for the service. The shop  can only deliver bikes for liability reasons but cannot pick up such for service.

They also said, however, they have yet to do a single repair on any of these bikes, warranty or otherwise.  Seems to be the most reliable bike ever made--or else they sold very few. I didn't ask which.  I guess that also means they have no experience working on them, but they are located close to the main service center in Redwood City where the main Energica service people are for the entire USA, who they can deal with as necessary.

So it's mostly good news.  Sometime after the 10th, if I like the bike after I try it out I will do a trip to Mt. View, CA in my Tesla  and buy the bike. I was told they just got in  a new EsseEsse9 at Mt. View. If it sells before I get there, not an issue as I will simply order one. It's not like I need to be in a hurry for my 10th bike or 3rd electric motorcycle.

Here is their SS-9 model as of last Saturday. (BTW, I will be at the shop this Saturday cooling my heels as my R1200RS gets its coolant and brake fluid replaced, which is likely to set me back about $400.)

What I have been told when Calmoto first started selling the Energica is that they bring the bikes to the company's service center in Redwood City if it need anything but the most minor chassis service.

Thanks for that photo. In two weeks or so that bike may no longer be there. It's even the color that I want.

I was told to deal with a guy by the name of Jackson there. Do you know who he is?

It will take me about 3.5 hours to drive there from Auburn.

When I do, it will probably be early on a week day, but doesn't have to be.

If you would like to meet me there, I can tell you when I should be there.

There’s no denying the beauty of the blue EsseEsse9 in person. Pictures don’t do the color nor the finish justice. I was really torn between getting the Eva107 and adding bar risers and aftermarket lower pegs (not to mention heated grips and a screen) but the EsseEsse9 they had at the time already had the heated grips, the better riding position and the blue ergal screw set. I just couldn’t take my eyes off it the entire time I was at CalMoto.

In the end I’m glad I pulled the trigger on the EsseEsse9. Not as fast as the Eva107 but more than fast enough to haul my big rear around and I love the way it looks more and more each day.

The sales manager that I deal with is Arlie. You can see his desk at the far right of the attached photo. His desk is located in the Energica section, next to the exterior wall.  I believe Jackson is the salesman that sits in the middle of the showroom.

Thanks. I am staying overnight in Mountain View on the 13th. Even if it's gone, I can order one there, if I decided to buy it. And even if I do buy the one that's there now, it will be a while before it gets to Auburn, And later to Reno when I ride it back here.

I really won't know anything until the 10th. I assume you read about our meeting at the Elk Grove WalMart on the 10th. If not see here. (http://electricmotorcycleforum.com/boards/index.php?topic=9233.0) Will you be able to make the trip?

However, If I decide the SS9 is not for me on the 10th, I will cancel my stay in Mt. View for the 13th as that will be the only reason for me to go there.

The paperwork MUST be done in the same shop that sells the bike, so that cannot be done in their Livermore shop.

Okay, have fun at Alice's. I have been there too, of course, many years ago.

I would say you need some chargers, but I see you have ICE bikes for the longer trips.

I even like my SR for longer trips as long as there are charging stations on the way. I charge at 6.3 KW while on the road. Before I got my new Elcons, I charged at half that by carrying two Zero Delta-Q chargers or whatever they are called. At home, I sometimes use both (two Elcons plus two Zero chargers) and charge at 8.3 KW.

I can't recall what the price tag said about the model year.  The tag really didn't say much, unlike the BMW price tags which are quite detailed about the equipment and features of each model. Mostly what I noticed was the price of $20,600 "and up".   ???

I will want mine with the sidebags, tankbag and windscreen. I don't think I need any of the other options (or what to you recommend?). What should I expect the out the door price to be?  I am guessing around 25K$. Am I close?

What is the longest trip you have done on your bike so far?  And what would you say your range has been on and off the freeway?

BTW, I just noticed that the Rocklin Harley Dealer now has their CCS and J-plug charging at their shop according to Plugshare. I wonder if they have the Livewire in yet. I may go down there as early as tomorrow and take a look.

Brandon took that exact same bike and, on two different days did ~650 miles one time and 821 the other.

Yeah, by the time you add side cases, windscreen and a tank bag plus tax, license and fees you're probably looking at 26k'ish out the door. I have the side cases on order to replace my Kriega drypacks as commuting storage (I'll still use the Kriegas if I ever need more capacity) and I have the Energica windscreen installed.

To be honest, I haven't noticed much difference in range on or off the freeway with the windscreen installed. It's about the size of a large number plate. If you get it, don't be surprised if you end up replacing it with something bigger and/or more aerodynamic.

Personally, I don't like the idea of a tank bag covering up the cool looking lighted logo on the VCU cover ("tank"). When we meet up this Saturday, you'll see my 10 liter Kriega drypack. I think something similar to the Kriegas will provide more versatility than a tank bag if the side cases aren't sufficient. Not that I'm a Kriega rep or anything but they come in 30 liter, 20 liter, and 10 liter sizes and you can attach the various drypaks to each other to increase storage as needed.

The longest ride I've taken on mine is from the dealer to home (Mountain View to Antioch or ~70 miles) where I stop in Pleasanton at a fast charger to recharge (my job has one and there's on at the Stoneridge Mall outside Buckhorn's). At ~70mph of pure freeway riding I use up 70% charge to go 38 miles. To be fair, I'm a big guy (250lbs) so when you add on riding gear and any kind of luggage it doesn't surprise me that I don't get the same range figures as other owners have reported.

I like seat pack luggage the fastens to the passenger seat. In particular, I really like the RKA 18-liter Star II seat bag. I have one on all of my motorcycles, including my Zero. An excellent design that is very well made and can be removed and reinstalled in seconds. Plus, it has a carrying handle and a carry shoulder strap.

Tomorrow, I will take my SR to the Harley  shop in Rocklin and perhaps check into their charge station on PlugShare.  But I think they have a small fee for non- Livewires. I will know more when I get there. But they have a J-plug as well as CCS.
For them to charge for a Jplug may not work well there. Right across the freeway from them there is free to use J-plug that I have used many times.

I will see if they have the LiveWire, as dealers are supposed to be getting them this month. Not that I have any interest in buying such. Seems like a rip-off for the 30K$ pricetag compared to the other bikes, like yours.

I just checked on-line, they are closed on Mondays, so I will do that trip tomorrow (Tuesday). I will post about it in the LiveWire section after that trip.

That means around 54 miles at 100% used and there is probably some "reserve". An hour on the freeway at 70 MPH  is not bad for range, as long as there are places to charge.

But do you know what your city range is? Say at 35 MPH?

I wish they would do what Tesla does and have a chart for range versus speed. My Tesla Model Three has a 420 mile range at 38 MPH, 310 miles at 65 MPH.  At less or more than 38 MPH the  range decreases. I would like to know which speed gives the very best range on all my bikes. But I expect my Zeros to peak in range  at around 20 or 25 MPH, less than where the Tesla drops off from slow speed driving.

I can’t give range figures for cruising at 35mph since I have issues staying off the throttle even when cruising through town. ;) If I take all surface streets into work it’s a 34 mile trip each way. I do end up with a couple of pretty steep hills on that route and a couple of spots where speeds can reach 70mph but for the most part the route averages about 45mph with a lot of lights. In that case I use about 40% battery to go that 34 miles but I’m sure I can do even better if I stay within 5mph of the speed limit the entire route.

I normally take  the  side streets on my electric motorcycles. I am retired and I am rarely in a hurry. Even when I go to meet you in Elk Grove, I will take mostly the small streets all the way down as that doubles my range on a charge.  On longer rides, we get places the fastest by going slow as that way as we do not have to recharge nearly as long.

But would you guess your range around doubles when you go half the speed on your Energica, as with my Zeros?

I would say a rough doubling of range highway vs city riding is pretty accurate if you stay within ~5mph of posted speed limits.

Have you tried all there models of the Energicas?  At least sit on them all?  I wonder how the riding position compares. I  could end up buying to most expensive one, the red one with the frame mounted fairing, if it fits me well. It sure looks nice from the photos, but looks is the last thing on my list when buying a bike. I can't look at it while riding!

I have ridden all 3. The Ego is not, and never will be, my thing. I grew up on the dirt; I can't do track bike positioning. The Eva is absolutely fine, but the SS9 is just downright *comfortable*.

If you like track positioning then you'll probably love the Ego. Brandon is obsessed with it, but with his smashed up spine he can't maintain that position for long trips. That's the main reason he's doing the Iron Butt attempt on an SS9.

I think I was just talked back into the SS9. But I will sit on the others just to see for myself.

Speaking of new Energicas, here is a long video detailing the features of a custom electric motorcycle from a company called DeBolex who designed the bike using the Energica power train.  A nice job of styling and quite understated, unlike most customs:

Here is a Motorcycle.com video review of the 2018 Energica Eva Esse Esse 9 that I just found:

I didn't ride the Ego because I knew the sport bike riding position was a no-go for me. I rode the Eva107 and the Esse Esse 9. The Esse Esse 9 was the most comfortable without a doubt. You could notice the difference in power between the Eva107 and SS9 but like the Motorcycle.com review said, it wasn't enough of a difference that I felt the SS9 was underpowered in any way.

I found the Eva107 riding position very similar to the SR/F which is why I decided to go with the SS9 and cancel my SR/F order. I'd rather have to do a bit more routine preventative maintenance and be comfortable than get a bike that's extremely low maintenance but not enjoy riding as much.

So far, after about a month in I have no regrets about pulling the trigger on the Energica. Ask me again in a year though after I've racked up mileage. ;)

Sounds good.

How does the foot peg position on the SS9 compare to the SR/F?  When I test rode the SR/F, that bothered me even more than the riding position. Was way too cramped. Not enough room between footpegs and seat.  And how does the power compare between the SS9 and the SR/F?

Footpegs on the SS9 are noticeably lower than on the SR/F. Again, I found the Eva107 to be closest to the SR/F regarding riding position. I find the SS9 more relaxed than those two.

The performance between the SR/F and SS9 are very close. The biggest difference I've found is the power delivery from a stop. Energica seems to have softened the power delivery from a dead stop so it builds rather than being an "on/off" kind of delivery. Once you're rolling though it's just like any other electric...nearly instantaneous power delivery. It's slows it down in regards to 0-60 times but roll-on is exhilarating.

The Eva107's performance on the other hand is noticeably stronger than the SR/F and SS9 in roll-ons but it too is softened from a dead stop.

My guess is Energica softened the power delivery to keep folks from looping the bikes on themselves from a dead stop...just my guess. Nothing to confirm my opinion.
