Title: How many bikes does Zero sell? How can we tell?
Post by: flattetyre on March 27, 2019, 01:52:23 AM
USA only for simplicity. Bikes sold to the military and police departments don't count.

Based on the number of dealers and demo bikes available around the country, and the used market, Zero's USA volume looks pretty small. Like a few hundred new bikes a year small, comprising all the models.

Is this reasonable? I would say maybe it's even in the lower hundreds a year based on social media presence compared to other low production bikes (youtube, forums, facebook).

I understand that the overall production volume is well above this, so global and authoritarian markets must be a pretty big proportion of their overall sales. Or is that incorrect?

Anyone else do some thinking on this subject?

Good luck discovering a factual answer to your question.  A number of 2,000 units has been tossed around by the press for an entire year of Zero production, of all models sold worldwide.  However, I wouldn't be surprised if a large percentage of those are fleet sales. Some countries in the EU document motorcycle sales, which are likely in the neighborhood of over 500 units or more a year.  I would be surprised if U.S. private sales are too much higher than that, but who knows?  I am just guessing, as Zero does not publish sales figures for the North American market, as far as I know. I am sure that if anyone has any better information (more accurate than my speculation) they will comment.

The serial numbers of the bikes indicate a total volume of at least 10,000 bikes. We’ve not worked out a way to break that down by market or year, although some figures were published once indicating 20% growth trend year over year. Sales in France are available but it’s not clear at all that trends there reflect elsewhere.

I know there are folks out there who "count" Tesla's based on federal registration of VINs.  I can't imagine someone who understood this process couldn't do same for Zero's.

You may recall that when almost all 2012 Zeros were recalled the total number was not much over 200.  I am not sure how Zero specifies their VIN system and if it is consecutive from year to year.  However, my 2018 Zero was built in November 2017 and has a VIN around 9500, so that does seem to indicate that they have built around 10K vehicles during the past 10 years. But how many of those were sold in the U.S. and other markets to private customers is another question, entirely.  Does anyone have a 2019 model with a VIN that might indicate if the number has been increasing consistently from year to year since my bike was built?

Not 2019, but this is pretty nice data from http://home.hasslers.net/zerologparser/vin-summary.php
Sorry if my copy paste doesn't line up the columns.  Not sure how to do tabs. (edit: Thanks for the help, togo)

Here's one of the previous threads. I know there's at least one, maybe a couple more.

Choosing font face Anadale Mono (at the bottom of the edit area), swapping unpredictable tabs for spaces:

Year    Lowest   Serial #   Highest Serial #    Unaccounted Gap
2013    02712     03207         2712                   495
2014    03325     04470          118                  1145
2015    04495     05509           25                  1014
2016    05558     07024           49                  1466
2017    07095     08776           71                  1681
2018    08827     10535           51                  1708

Oddly, Courier didn't work for me.  It came out proportional, and Courier should be monospaced.
