Title: Does Anyone Ride Their FX Off Pavement?
Post by: Jarrett on January 30, 2019, 03:53:56 AM
Just curious if anyone does that.

If so, do you use any custom settings that work better off pavement?

The trick in going off pavement is to be comfortable with the bike moving around and having limited traction. You will have to crash many  times to get there but you shouldn't get hurt or damage your bike too bad. After a while you will have a lot of fun sliding the bike. People think tires are important offroad, but they are actually less important than you think. There are a few videos on youtube of people riding stock streetbikes on offroad tracks at speeds that will make your head spin.

If you're just trying to get through and don't mind going real slow when needed, of course try eco mode and spent plenty of time on the back brake.

 :)  Lots of people.
I'm glad your getting a 19 FX and believe me I get that your excited and curious but understand most of your questions were answered in thread posts in 2013/14 when these were new.  Kind of old hat for most members so don't feel bad if 50 people don't jump in.

I promise all you have to do is go slow and easy when you first get it then play around with your custom setting from your phone and you'll find out how to set it up best for you.  That's part of the fun.

The one issue that came up most often was belts snapping.  If people were jumping things and kept fast throttle it put a lot of load on the belt when it hit the ground again and could snap the belt.  Also getting gravel (rooster tails) stuck between the belt and sprocket and snapping it.  Anything thick or hard in the way can cause too much tension and snap it.  Should be less with the newer bigger belts but it can happen.
That's where the chain kit option comes in.
Mostly off road?  Get the chain.
Mostly road or lite off road keep the belt it's quieter and no lubing needed.

I'm assuming based on the replies so far, people either aren't riding off pavement that much or aren't using custom settings or they forgot what they were.

102 viwes so far.  Not sure how many of them actually have a FX, and then the subset of those who would respond.

The Altla and KTM that have regenerative braking only have it in the least sporting mode.  You could also ask how many FX owners have installed a lhrb (left hand rear brake)

You might note that the dirt section on this forum is inactive.  Off road could mean differennt things to different people.  Rock garden, sand dune, etc.

Do you have an off road bike currently or past, belong to any clubs that promote off road events?

Does 5,800 mostly-dirt miles count?  :)

Mine's a '14 with a ton of mods, nearly all of which are described here at EMF:

I've posted that pic before, just like it for some reason.

That counts.  What mods?  Any custom app settings you'd recommend for dirt riding?

Here (http://electricmotorcycleforum.com/boards/index.php?topic=7071.0) is a list of links to my mods / repairs / etc.  I changed the max mph to 60 & both normal & brake regen to 30% in Custom mode (100% torque).
