Title: Do all S, DS racks fit all model years?

So, earlier this year I bought a 2016 SR. Recently I bought a used rack for the S, DS model line. It lines up with the top bolt holes and the seat mounting holes just fine. But what are the small threaded lugs that are welded to the side of the flat steel mounting bracket used for? They don't line up with any holes in the frame to help support the top bolts from ripping straight out in case of an overloaded rack. BTW the top half of the  mounting threads in the frame are partly destroyed so I'll try to tap it clean before I over drill it to the next size up bolt. Any answers or suggestions are welcome.

Good question. I sometimes wonder about that then I forget about it.  ;)  My best guess is that they are for mounting the Zero hard saddlebag mounting brackets.  ???

Confirmed, they are used for the saddle bag racks.

Thanks, I wondered if that might be the case. I sure couldn't see any reason for them, but since I didn't get any info with the rack I wanted to ask those with more knowledge. The unofficial service manual has a nice install tutorial, including bolt thread sizes!

2013-2018 anyway, yes.

2012 and older had a different frame, I think.
