Title: Powering a micro relay for 1.5 seconds (+-) with a capacitor.
Post by: ESokoloff on April 05, 2018, 01:22:39 PM
Does anyone have experience or advice?
I need a robust micro relay (that will hold up to vibration) & a properly sized capacitor to hold the coil in for the approx .75 seconds of the turn signal indication pulse.
For now the relay only has to power the single 3.5 or so watt LED but I eventually will add an additional few 1 &/or 3 watt LED bolts to the hand grips. (Likely one of each/side).
https://www.oznium.com/led-bolts-prewired-leds/led-bolt

I want to run my modified front 1157 turn indicators in the full lum output all the time yet allow them to still flash as turn indicators.
This will maximize my conspicuousness in daylight.

For details on the 1157 LED project
See here http://electricmotorcycleforum.com/boards/index.php?topic=7677.msg66253#new

And here http://electricmotorcycleforum.com/boards/index.php?topic=7857.msg66254#new

I only want to interrupt the side that's in signal mode (the other side will not be effected unless the 4way flashers are on).
I want the front to flash in the same phase as the rear as well as the dash indicators.

I'll need two SPDT relays (one for each front signal) of which I'll run the running light curcuit through the N.C. contacts & power the relay via the turn indicator.
Initializing the signal will power the relay which will interrupt  the running curcit.
Initializing the signal will also power the LED & it will flash in the proper phase.
I replaced the signal relay with an electronic one and it alternates at approx .75 HZ.

TIA

Sounds like a job for a 555 Timer IC

Absolutely http://electricmotorcycleforum.com/boards/index.php?topic=7857.0 (http://electricmotorcycleforum.com/boards/index.php?topic=7857.0)
only I'm not Soild State savvy enough to make it happen.
I'm (now) figuring that can achieve the time delay via an Electro-Mechanical solution.
It's something that I might be able to figure out how to accomplish via trial & error.

Or these might do the trick....

Or maybe just a 12V inverter!

Sure, the blinks will be opposite, but they'll blink, and normally-off becomes normally-on.
I think CMOS logic gates can do 12V, but I don't know if you can find logic chips that will do the
amps, you'd probably still need a power transistor or a relay.

Or you could wire up a relay for each side so the normally-closed powers the turn signal,
so the old turn signal to the relay turns off the lights.  "Solid state" relays are available for
durability.

No new timer necessary.

Doh.  I see this is MrDude_1's idea too!

Anyway, maybe a second way of explaining it will make it clearer?

Sorry, I'm an electromechanical kind of guy that can dabble a bit in electronics but I'm not nderstamding this.

Only if I interrupt it before the Front/Rear split so both ends work together.
I have a 1w Amber bolt in the rear that's semi side facing & plan to do the same in the front.

This won't work as I'm looking to completely kill the LED running feature when the indicators are activated.

Remember, I converted the stock single filament incandescent to an 1157 (duel luminous)
LED so I'm not looking to add a running light, but rather turn the running light off so as to increase the effect of the turn indicators.

Also, I think Solid State relays with N.C. contacts are hard to get & quite pricey.

Um, having a mostly on running light that blinks when the turn signal
is on is *exactly* the inverse of normal behavior.  I don't see why you
need dual filament to get that.  But you could wire up both filaments.
But you say LED, so "filament" isn't right anyway.

You are correct that a LED does not have a filament but I never said they do.
What I said was the stock incandescent turn indicator bulb was single filament & that the 1157 LED that I replaced them with is duel luminous.

I should backtrack and say that what I'm trying to achieve is in essence a single output level DRL/Turn signal (DRL= Daytime Running Lights).
I may not be able to do this with the LED's that I crammed into the turn indicator pods as they may not be rated for continual hi level but I plan on installing a 3watt LED bolt in each hand gard facing forward & a 1watt LED bulb facing sideways (all will be Amber).
https://www.oznium.com/led-bolts-prewired-leds/led-bolt

I want to use these as DRL (full output) & as a blinking turn indicator (again full output but obviously pulsed by the electronic turn indicator relay).

When/if I come up with a sulution, I will then extinguish the running light feature of the turn indicator pods durning turn/4 way flasher events.

I feel this will make the turn indicators easier to see.
Many motorists need all the help you can give them.

FOUND IT!!!!!!!!!

- Front turn signal activated -
White LEDs OFF. Amber LEDs ON. When the turn signal is deactivated, Amber LEDs will be OFF and White LEDs will be automatically ON again after 2 seconds.

2 of these & a handful of diodes and I should be good :)

Nice find! Can you do a writeup and a quick video how it is working once installed on your ride?  Will you make it operable with the ignition switch off?

No can do (I'm not savvy enough :-(

It's also looking like I won't get to this for a while as other projects like yard & house work will take priority for now.
I'm content for now with all LED's upfront including 10w aux Selective Yellow fog lights mounted on the fork slider protectors as well as the Amber 1157’s shoe-horned into the stock arrow turn indicator pods.
I do have images & videos of the work thus performened but have no way of posting.

If anyone's interested in hosting them, I could send via email.

Also I found some info on useing a capacitor to hold in a relay for what I'm interestied in.
The key word is "switchback" as apparently that's what it's called when you turn off running lights while the turn signal flashes.
