Title: Turn Signal Relay for LED's 2016 DSR
Post by: ESokoloff on January 20, 2018, 09:04:53 AM
I'm looking into replacing my incandescent bulbs to LED's so need info in order to procure the proper LED compliant relay.
It appears that that the relay is under the faux tank.
I didn't feel like tearing it all apart to get the info so I'm hoping someone knows the spec's.

I found two different units on superbrightleds.com

https://www.superbrightleds.com/moreinfo/flashers-load-resistors/cf13gl-02-led-bulb-electronic-flasher/782/836/

And

https://www.superbrightleds.com/moreinfo/flashers-load-resistors/fl3-red-led-bulb-electronic-flasher/780/834/

Bonus points for led replacement recommendations.

Anyone try these?

My local O'Reily auto parts has a whole variety of led flashers, cheap. When you're ready to swap it, just bring the stock one to O'Reily or Pep Boys or Canadian Tire or what have you and match it up.

For led advice, first check the Unofficial Manual. A big white tower should work well in the tail light (1157?) [Edit: I understand some or all Zeros come with an LED taillight. Mine looks like an aftermarket 1157 plug in.] Be careful with the turn signals because they are not standard 1156s in all the Zeros. Check the side pins, and notice the height - regular size 1156 glass is too tall. Or you could use those really nice (but not so cheap) ones from Weiser. I have some like this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/US-2x-6V-1156-ba15s-12-SMD-LED-Amber-Car-Bulb-Light-Brake-Turn-Tail-Reverse-Lamp-/192378692699?hash=item2ccaa9e45b
Not bad, very cheap.

Thanks Clay,
I hadn't considered sourcing the relay local.

I'm putting togeather an order from superbrightleds.com & wanted to include a flasher with that order but rather then tearing the bike down twice (daily commuter) I will pick one up locally if I don't get a response from this posting.

The bulbs on the 16 DSR are 5009's and I've had good luck with superbrightleds.com so will stick with their offerings unless I get a better suggestion.

The taillight is OEM LED.
I want to change the turn bulbs to LED not to conserve power but primarily to eliminate the incandescent lag as I will be adding aux LED's & want symmetry/consistency.
Plus I'm HOPEing for greater lumens.

Prior to my posting for help, I actually managed to find this but when I googled the mentioned relay I struck out.

This I did not find (as I was researching signal relays, not bulbs).
It contained the info I needed, thank you.

I've had the relay changed when they installed my charge tank, don't remember what type it is but it's a standard three connector thingy. Ordered one from aliexpress even, come to think of it...

Try the local auto parts store (Pep Boys,  O'Reilly, AutoZone, etc). Look for an LED flasher (not a relay, though it looks like one). My O'Reily had a whole variety, different pin configurations and different loads.

Here's a fallow up....

I ended up getting a electronic relay via Amazon & swapped the two pins opposite of each other on the bike plug  (+ & -???) so this "conventional" relay will work on a Zero.

See the post below on details on what I did for LED's........

PS, long week for me & the spelling mistakes prove it.

The thing you need to be careful of when changing to a LED turn signal bulb is the length.  The depth of the turn signal housing is very shallow so a typical LED bulb won't work.  The ones from ebay in the link in reply #1 look like they would work, but is 6V the correct voltage?

Eastern Beaver is another good source for electronic parts.  Very good quality products from Japan.

 .............

I ended up using these https://www.amazon.com/LASFIT-12-24V-Extremely-Non-Polarity-Blinker/dp/B077T8G9PG/ref=sr_1_1?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1522326368&sr=1-1&keywords=Lasfit+1157A
I had to heavily modify them tho (in NO WAY plug n play).
I unsoldered the two pins on the bottom (run/signal input) then separated the brass base/can from the aluminum " bulb".
These have a LED driver inside the brass base/can which I remounted to the underside of the reflector (after extending the wires & incapsulating in heat shrink. CATION:It's a tight fit).
I had to grind down the O.D. of the aluminum bulb at its base so it would fit into the socket of the reflector.
When compleated, the top of the bulb doesn't stand any taller then the original glass one and the top is semi pointy (tapered) like the original (& Un-like the flat/wide top of a conventional LED tower).
These are 1157 type so they are dual output.
The output lum's appear to be as bright (if not slightly brighter) as the stock bulb so I'm happy with them.
I tapped into the supplementary running headlight running light circuit & ran an additional wire to each of the front turn signal pods to power the low lum input (run light) of the bulbs.
NOTE: I only put these in the front as Amber running lights are not legal in the rear.
I could use a red version but Amber is the safest color to use for turn indicators.

In the future, I may install these to the rear http://www.hightechspeed.com/products/xarc/index.html in duel color so I can have red low lum for running, hi lum for stop, & Amber for turn indication.
(Presumably the Amber will dominate the other modes thus give a clear turn indication).

Well I've done a lot of searching over the last couple of days and due to the very shallow turn signal housing and somewhat non-standard 150 degree pin offset (thanks Zero) there are very few options for a plug and play LED replacement bulb.  Yes the LED turn signal board from Weisner will work, but no way I'm shelling out $170 to convert my turn signals to LED.

I found some shallow LED bulbs with a 180 degree pin base that could be modified to fit, but the lumen output and quality are not very good.

If anyone out there has found a good alternative, please share.

I pretty much came to the conclusion that without a cheap and easy solution, which doesn't really seem to exist, there's just no compelling reason to change. They look better than incandescents, but that's about the only real-world advantage. The power draw of a 12W turn signal is insignificant, and they're on so infrequently anyhow that it's just not worth spending any money on even if there were an easy solution available.

I look at it differently.

I want additional lumination for the purposes of enhanced conspicuousness.

Agreed.  The only reason for me to convert to LED's is is to have brighter, more visible turn signals.   All the LED bulbs I looked at that might be able to work had pretty lame lumens.

There are these bulbs, but with a length of 40mm are probably too long and I don't see the lumen output given.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/2-X-581-AMBER-INDICATOR-CAR-BULBS-19-LED-ORANGE-12V-21W-BAU15S-AUXILIARY-BULB/382401776282?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649

These might work if you modify the base, but the lumen output is only 176.

I do too, but instead of the turn signals, I focused on putting an LED headlight bulb in the front, and I am working on a LED rear light solution.
Even when its hyper-bright the turn signals are a bit small.

One other idea I had would be to modify the lens cover by drilling a hole in it to let a taller LED tower bulb fit through and then seal the end of the bulb with a clear PVC cap glued to the lens.  Seems like a bit of work, but it would be super visible and cheap to fab up.

I already have a 5700k LED headlight & aux bulb along with lower fork mounted selective yellow 10w fog lights.
Amber running lights add another layer of conspicuousness.
Eventually I want to add an additional 4 Amber LED bolts (2 per side) to the hand-gards for some side & additional front coverage but will hold off until i get the running/signal interface device figured out.

Does anyone know the lumen output of the stock turn signal bulb?

Neither of these two operations or suitable replacements for the stock  incandesce bulb.

Both state to be 360° coverage (RUN!!!!)
The e-bay claims 3.96 watts but I seriously dought that's possable.
(See "Full Item Description")

The Amazon offering is $1/bulb and only .6 watts so not suitable.

In order to achieve an incandescent comparable LED (lum output) a heat sink likely will be involved (to keep the temperatures of the LED(s) manageable).

Look at the construction of SYLVANIA's hi powered LED's https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=sylvania+zevo+led&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Asylvania+zevo+led (https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=sylvania+zevo+led&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Asylvania+zevo+led)

The LASFIT 1157A (Duel output) will fit with modifications  https://www.amazon.com/LASFIT-12-24V-Extremely-Non-Polarity-Blinker/dp/B077T8G9PG/ref=sr_1_1?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1523064257&sr=1-1&keywords=Lasfit+1157a (https://www.amazon.com/LASFIT-12-24V-Extremely-Non-Polarity-Blinker/dp/B077T8G9PG/ref=sr_1_1?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1523064257&sr=1-1&keywords=Lasfit+1157a)

I wish I remembered the exact limitations of the bulb Real estate (how long you could get way with). I seem to recall only 35mm or so.

I'm not liking making any alterations to the exterior of the pod &/or lens but that's just me.

I'm definitely frugal (otherwise I'ld have gone the Weiser route) but you have to be willing to expend a little bit in order to achieve the desired affect (comparable or greater lum output with long term reliability).

Perhaps consider http://www.hightechspeed.com/products/xarc/index.html (http://www.hightechspeed.com/products/xarc/index.html)
A bit pricey but looks to be a Quality product at a decent price (especially compared to Weiser).

BamBam,

These are Plug-n-play.  http://dynamicmotorrad.com/ (http://dynamicmotorrad.com/)
They don’t list a model for Zero but perhaps they have one that will work.
$30 a pop sounds reasonable considering it’s a drop in solution.

Judging from the photos, the Motorrad bulbs will definitely fit the smaller arrow style turn signal.

Thanks for the links Arcadia.  The problem I see with the bulb in your first link is they are clear and we need an amber bulb for our turn signals. The base is also a BA15S so you would need to file off one of the pins to get it to fit in the socket.

Similar base issue with the bulb in the second link, but at least it's available in yellow.  At that price I think I'll give it a try.

I found these bulbs on Amazon that got great reviews and would be a direct plug-n-play, but at $50 a pop........no thanks.

I'm seeing some conflicting information regarding the polarity of the electronic flasher relay.  If I'm looking at the bottom of the flasher where the pins are located (i.e. the pins are facing me) should the positive (+) be on the right side or left side?

I was also looking at those same bulbs.  The 5730 is a very bright SMD.  I did some measuring and the housing of our turn signal will accept a bulb with a max length of about 1.5", maybe a tad more, so it will be interesting to see if this bulb fits.  Please keep us posted.

FYI, I emailed the seller regarding the length of the Ebay bulb you provided a link for and the seller replied that it is 2.08" so I don't think that is going to fit in the turn signal housing.

I had one fall apart right away, so you may want to order an extra pair.

Alrighty then. Got the bulbs from china today. Pretty good quality. Really good quality for the price! Bam Bam was concerned about fitment. They are long enough to touch the lens. They will hold the lens about an eighth of an inch away from the body of the turn signal. All I did was push the lens into the bulb and re installed the screw. Done. You can overcome the spring tension of the bulb holder without much effort. You can also relieve the spring tension by bending the tab back a tad but I didn't see any need to. The bulbs are BRIGHT but you'll still need an LED flashing relay. I just mounted the rear bulbs for now and I'll live with the fast flash till I get the flashing relay. For 10 bucks It's WAY better than stock.

I am having good luck with these bulbs but they do require a resistor inline.

Any automotive parts store I’ve visited has better relays for this purpose that what you all are listing on AliExpress or Amazon.

I think I bought mine at Autozone.

It’s okay to buy these things, but expecting them to be reliable is wildly inappropriate. Quality is ensured by solid supplier relationships that ensure accountability. AliExpress and Amazon are not good at that. They just drive prices down. Amazon’s review system is manipulable.
