It's pretty exciting reading about all these alternative chargers, but I'd love to get some specific, practical advice. I'm no electrical engineer, and I'm considering an aftermarket replacement for the stock charger on my 15FX. I'd be happy with something weatherproof and 2 or 3 kw, preferably tied in as a replacement for the stock charger. Ideas?

So I dont have an FX, but I do have several of the meanwell chargers they used to use on them.
If I had an FX, I would probably buy a single brick diginow supercharger and replace the onboard with it.
that said, I dont know if they have an "official" version that way, but it looks like there's room for it to fit, it would give you max power you can safely pull from the 115v wall outlet, and will do 3.3kw when on 220 power.
If I ever bought a FXS I would go that route... I love how they look and ride, I just wish they had the same range as the S models.

You have to go DigiNow Supercharger. The other options have vibration and water intrusion problems. SuperCharger is rugged and has all sorts of options and accessories.

Yeah, I'd go diginow SCv2 single 3.3kw unit, wired so the J-plug feeds the onboard as well, giving you about 5kw to feed into your 5.7kwh battery, which is 5kw nominal, so you'd be right at the 1C limit, so you'd charge in an hour.
In the rare case where your input voltage was a little high, SCv2 might go as high as 3.5kw, you might have to disconnect the onboard to charge, which is easy, it goes into the same outlet as you already use.
That said, I have zero FX experience, so take what I say for what it's worth. (And I mean I have zero Zero(tm) FX experience, haha)

There has been a 4 month test now with a single 3.3 Diginow supercharger on an FX in Carmel California using a Tesla plug as the primary power source. There have been some experiments with different mounting solutions but it looks like since the charger is so light and power dense, that mounting far back on the tail is the best option for the 2013-2017 FX's. The 2018 FX can use 2 superchargers and one can be mounted up front on each side to be balanced. But this hasn't been tested yet. Bottom line is the Diginow supercharger kit is the way to go for something waterproof in the 3 kW range.

the text is "fuzzy" for me now, like its overlaying itself, slightly off.
also: "This is safe for all vehicle warranties. This is 100% safe to use on Zero motorcycles. " Im no lawyer, but I would leave off that first sentence if I was doing this... its asking for trouble. lol

It limits the voltage, it won't cook a battery. And Zero has to allow 3rd party chargers without voiding warranties. They're pretty safe saying that.

Looks like the v2 3.3 didn't last long. At this rate we'll all be charging in 10 minutes soon.

a 50a, 240v socket seems to be the most powerful easily found outlet. It should not see more than 40a (80%) but lets pretend we can pull the full 50, and the voltage has no sag. thats 12,000watts. from Doctorbass's findings we can assume its 95% efficent... so thats 11400w.
im going to use the 14.4 kWh new SR as thats what im looking at buying after jan 1st.
14.4 kilowatts would charge it in 60 mins. time six to get it in 10 mins.. thats 86.4kw.
so... 86.4/11.4= 7.57... or 8 plugs.
so all we need is 8 plugs maxxed out at your local campsite, and one hell of a blower on the heatsink :p

In North America. In Europe (and other places?), it seems 3 phases of 8A or 16A.

Nice to see some real world perspective on AC supply limitations. Once you leave the big city EV corridor and venture into places like south West Virginia as I often do, you are thrilled to find anything better than a 15amp outlet. I just bought a bunch of plugs to make adapters for the 220 and RV outlets that you can find in a cheap motel or campground. My collection now includes 6-15, 6-20, 6-30, 5-50, 6-50, TT-30, and the 14-50 mentioned by MrDude. I still would not be able to connect to the dryer and range plugs in my own house, 10-30 and 10-50. I have a J plug that I have never used. That's what my FX off road world looks like. I'm European and go camping regularly, and the normal pitch power is: hold your hats: 6 amps @ 230v = 1,38kW!!!
Sometimes, at campsites where they have a lot of big mobile homes visit, you can get 10 or even 16A, so 3.68kW max...
In the Netherlands, *if* you can charge at a campsite or motel, it's a Mennekes chargepoint at 11kW or more.

The digiNow Supercharger is best for weather and power density. I rode from Maine to Florida with it exposed to the elements and it worked great the whole way there and back (about 4,000 miles).

Best AC station in US is Tesla 8-16kw single phase 200-277v
EU is full of 16A 3 phase 240v... this is 10-11kW depending on voltage of the phases. Europe rocks because when I was riding over there I was never more than 10 min away from an 11kw station!
EU also has many 22 and 43 kw AC stations, perfect for Terry.
Our chargers use either 1 or 3 phases. I also have them setup so that if not all the legs of the three phase are available, they will automatically use only the present legs.
Also, full 3 phase connectors = amps*volts*3
partial 3 phase = amps*volts*2
Single phase = amps * volts
