Title: High temp warning when charging now not charging at all
Post by: Emtkopan on August 18, 2017, 06:00:25 PM
I can home from work and plugged in my SR later when I checked on it charging had stopped at 79% and the temp warning light was on.  Even after a day the light remains on and it won’t charge past 79%. Has anyone seen this before? I also noticed sometimes while riding me ABS light will blink on and off at times randomly.

What temperature does Zero app show on your phone?

What are the LED blink pattern on the BMS ?

Did you try giving it a rest?  Power off for an hour, try again?

Yes, what does the app say about battery voltage and temperature?

I got frustrated so I unplugged it and left it all night at 79%. This morning I got to get the answers to the questions you asked and it started to charge fine. No waring light or anything. It even charged up to 100%. Weird.

Now when I plug it up, the green light doesn't come on and it doesn't charge! Please help. I'm stuck at work until I can charge it up to get home tonight.

I don't know. Try to key the bike on and let the contactor click closed, then plug in to charge?
Bugger what else could be done to troubleshoot this.

I tried that and I tried the little connector without the grounding plug.

Are you getting power from the wall socket?  Maybe a circuit breaker tripped.  That used to happen all the time at my former workplace, when someone would turn on the microwave and the toaster oven at the same time.   :o

Is your electrical cord OK?  Once at my daughter's home my electrical cord melted down at the plug, probably due to corrosion and using an old too-light extension cord.

Does your Zero charger have a fuse or circuit breaker that might have blown?

I’ve check multiple cords and multiple outlets. The breakers are not tripped. Right now I’m about 5-8 mi from my house at a gas station trying to get it to charge. I’m trying to get the seat off so I can check the fuses.

I also tried resetting the BMS. I was able to send a motorcycle and battery log back in to myself m. The temperature gauge was reading 122 F but now reads 115 F.

At 122F the battery temp needs to cool to 118F before charging will be allowed again. Is it really that hot?

That’s what it said which I thought was strange because I didn’t ride it hard at all compared to my usual riding. But even at a temp of 93 F it still won’t charge. A friend suggested looking at fuses.

I made the mistake of trying to quick charge my 2017 Zero DS ZF 6.5  just after a hard ride on a very hot day (107F).  I had the bike in the extra hot garage and tried to quick charge right away, using both the on-board charger and one quick-charger.

At first, everything looked normal. It was charging. A half hour later, not only would the bike no longer charge, the bike would not run even after I disconnected everything. I waited for several hours and it still would not charge and would not run. A totally dead bike.  I had eight error messages on the display.

I read the unofficial service manual carefully and found out about the two reset buttons behind the rubber cover that is just behind the front wheel. I tried one and then the other, no help. Then I did a total reset by pressing in both buttons at the same time for a few seconds. All errors cleared and then the bike would charge and run normally.

And now I am more careful about trying to charge the battery when it feels extra warm or hot  to  touch.  And on very hot days, I charge outside in the shade.

I'll look into that. I recently moved and don't have a garage at the new place so I have to store it outside. At work it was stored in the fire bay all day and never charged though and I know it wasn't very hot there. If I get home when there is still light then I'll check fuses and try the total reset as well to see what happens. Right now it's in my backyard just parked. Usually when I ride to work I ride about 5AM at about 80-85mph without any issues. Yesterday, I only rode at 70-78mph and the battery supposedly got real hot.

UPDATE

I talked to Chris at Zero in Atlanta. Luckily for me I was able to run logs for both the battery and the motorcycle and emailed it to them last night before it died. He told me for whatever reason my charger stopped working after it overheated for the first time. They are replacing it under warranty with the newer model. Had it not been for the help you guys gave me I wouldn't have known to get the log for the battery and the motorcycle to send to them nor would I have known about the upper heat limitation that causes it to stop charging so thank you everyone. Chris at Zero, I also want to thank you for your help. I don't know if you guys read this forum but if you do, you absolutely have a loyal customer.

I have an lightweight reflective cover I ride with.  Might be good for hot summers, keep the sun from hitting the black bits.

> Yesterday, I only rode at 70-78mph and the battery supposedly got real hot.

My rule of thumb: riding below 60 cools battery, 70+ heats it, and rapid charging plus rapid riding gets you stuck.  Ride slow for a bit before and after charging, and monitor the battery temp with the zero app or the diginow dongle + anton's app.

I have a cover for mine too. I take it off after a day of rain so the moisture doesn’t build up underneath it. As for the ride, that’s slow on the interstate. I normally do 80-90 without any issues most of the 35 mi trip to or from work without it registering any heat issues.

I have never had heat issues, even though I live in Vegas where it was close to 120 degrees this summer.
I did have similar charger issues where it stopped charging at 84% I believe. This happened two times
at the same outlet at the same charge level. The charger was replaced both times. After the second
charger was replaced, I checked voltage before and after plugging in the SR. 120 Volts before plugging
in, and it dropped to 92~93 volts. Charger is SUPPOSED to be good down to 85 I believe. Since you
mentioned issues at work with overloaded circuit, you might check once charger is replaced. I now carry
a Voltage meter with me and check whenever I plug into an unknown outlet. While waiting for Charger
to be replaced, I used a QuiQ. It would drop the voltage to 101~102. If I am going to be somewhere that
I am not sure about connection, I now bring that along.

Are your referring to the household 120 VAC voltage?  If so, did you measure at the socket before any extension cords, while under load of the charger?  It seems either your extension cord is way too thin or way too long, causing too much of an AC voltage drop under load of the charger.

The model 913-9600-01  (quick charger) is rated from 100-240 VAC input. I think the on-board charger is the same rating.

I just looked at my QuiQ. I stand corrected. It does state a low end voltage of 100
My Apologies.
I have several Electric Vehicles some going as low as 85. I must have been thinking
of something else.

If your voltage is dropping that far, you are generating
heat somewhere in the chain, on too-thin wires or on poor
connections, please resolve those issues before you start a fire.

If it's not at the outlet or the extension cord, it may be that
the wiring in your walls is too thin.
