Title: Firmware version check
Post by: Tony on June 30, 2017, 03:37:24 PM
How to check what version of the firmware is installed? I'm heading to update my firmware now, and just want to double check I got the latest one from the dealer.

I did try to email myself the logs, but just got some binary files that are hard to read. Could not see any firmware version info there, also, I do not know what the latest firmware version is supposed to be...

What is the latest firmware version, and how can I confirm they installed the right one?

Google is u'r friend. There is a logfile parser, makes the bin file readable

Good idea. Use however: https://zero-motorcycle-community.github.io/browser-parse/

The firmware version and board revision should be revealed within the first few lines of output.

That worked perfectly, and it is a very user friendly option. Thanks! :)

I would still be interested to know how you get the bike's logs using the Zero app.  When I try the only think I get on the screen is my bike's VIN and nothing else.   ???

This procedure I followed, in detail:

When connected to your Zero via bluetooth in your app, select the support category, then press the button labeled "email bike logs". Choose to send full logs, and email them to yourself rather than the default recipient at Zero motorcycles. The email will contain two .bin attachments. Open them on this webpage:

  https://zero-motorcycle-community.github.io/browser-parse/zero-log-parser.html

And one of the bin files will show the version number (try both, they have different content). In my case, it looks like this:

Zero MBB log

Serial number      2015_xxxxxxxxxxx02
VIN                53xxxxxxxxx759
Firmware rev.      51
Board rev.         3
Model              DSR

Printing 639 of 639 log entries..

Entry    Time of Log (local)      Event                      Conditions
+--------+----------------------+--------------------------+----------------------------------
00001     06/30/2017 13:50:09   INFO:  Event log cleared by CAN restore defaults command
 00002     06/30/2017 13:50:09   Module 00                  vmod: 107.113V, batt curr: 0A
 00003     06/30/2017 13:50:09   Module 01                  vmod: 0V, batt curr: 0A

Etc.

If you have very old firmware to begin with, it might look different though, and you may need to update it to get the same info from the log as above, as the logging system might be one of the things they changed in newer firmwares. Other Zero models might also have different output. But for my 2016 DSR, this is the procedure I followed. Also worked fine while on the bikes original firmware, with version 48.

Is there a list a versions, or better yet a list of versions with what upgrades they inclded so we can decide if we want to upgrade or not? I know Zero recommends we have our dealer upgrade the bike on a regular basis, but I don't trust my dealer and rather not have the hassel. I  can already see my 2016 DSR is behind Tony with version 48 instead of 51.

It's complicated. Short answer no, although across the forum we're seeing reports of what happens from version to version and it's different depending on the model and year of the bike.

I haven't found any such changelog, but it would be great if Zero provided this.

I just updated from 48 to 51, so you might be interested in my experience. It feels like the throttle now is tuned differently, so that you need to turn it further than before to get the same power. It means you can fine tune the throttle at low speeds, if you want max power you really have to go for it all the way. Like a logarithmic scale is applied. Before a small twist would send me flying ahead. Not sure I like this new setting better, I need to get used to it.

Also, it feels like the motorcycle is now somewhat better at regen. It gives that regen sound more often than before. Quite subtle stuff, not sure if my feeling is accurate.

According to what the dealer said, the majority of the changes can't be noticed during regular use, and is related to charging and battery level estimation. Actually, they were quite vague, so seems Zero didn't give away much details...

It would be helpful if Zero had a changelog for firmware updates, even if it just reported broad categories addressed.

I do hear about what updates fix in various ways, but it's a pile of hearsay and I try to be careful about what to claim, so not much winds up on the wiki.

Those are interesting, though I hadn't heard any suggestion about that. I did receive a second letter from Zero urging me to update, but without any of the charging/storage hint of previous communications.

SoC estimation was reportedly improved recently, but I wasn't sure what version numbers corresponded to that change and a friend has had trouble figuring out what's going on with his bike on that matter.

Take my experience with a pinch of salt. The difference I felt is quite subtle, and it might be some kind of placebo effect coupled with the bike feeling a bit different after adjusting air pressure in the tires, which I did while upgrading the firmware.  :)

However, I did see at least one other member of the forum mentioning he had a somewhat similar experience after upgrading. Without any official word from Zero on this I guess it is hard to know for sure...

New here. Thought I would share my experience. Took my 2016 fxs in for service today. The firmware was updated to v51. Was 49 before that.

Should probably add that I didn't notice any particular changes in the way the bike rides after the update, other than to say it seemed more smooth. Probably just my imagination but at least it seems to be more positive as opposed to negative.

I made a guesswork firmware revision table just to track versions:
http://zeromanual.com/index.php/Unofficial_Service_Manual#Firmware_Versions (http://zeromanual.com/index.php/Unofficial_Service_Manual#Firmware_Versions)

I have no idea how we'll keep this updated or check for accuracy other than asking around.

It was a struggle for me, but with help from a friend I finally was able to decode my bike's logs.  However, the only things that I found useful were:

Zero MBB log Serial number 2014_mbb_0386e1_00100 VIN 538SM5Z26ECA03404 Firmware rev. 36 Board rev. 1 Model NON and that I have a Calex 1200W Charger.  The rest of the logs were not very interesting. I remain very happy that my 2014 Zero S is running perfectly.  :)

The only difference in riding I've felt was downhill at full charge.  It used to pulse as regen kicked in and voltage went up and regen was disabled.  I think they just disable regen above a certain voltage now, about 98% SoC.

SoC might be better overall, but it performed badly one a multi-partial-charge ride recently, the SoC drifted to the point where I had 52% SoC indicated at loss of thrust which caused me to seek out a for-pay chargepoint nearby, and it pumped 9.8kwh in before declaring full.  Charging loss is reportedly 5%, and if that's true, that's 9.4kwh into a battery that supposedly was at 52%.  (I'd love a battery that big.)

So, yeah, the moral I take from my recent experience is not to take SoC seriously, especially if you have a series of partial runs and charges.   I'm going to start monitoring voltage, like Electric Terry recommends, taking it seriously at high and low end.  From the table Mr. Wilson brought to my attention, it looks like 97v and 96v are key points to watch for, real 20% and 10% SoC.  But of course voltage is a bit dynamic under load, and definitely not to be trusted as a proxy for SoC in the mid plateau.

I guess I should post to Terry's voltage-related thread as well.

Wow... i decided to check the Firmware today and this is the info that I downloaded.
Zero MBB log

Serial number      2015 XXXXXXXX 34
VIN                53XXXXXXXX27
Firmware rev.      40
Board rev.         3
Model              DSR

I guess it is a 2015 not a 2016?

and I have version 40 should have 51, will call dealer tomorrow and get it update.... and I bought it less that 2 months ago. Ill post details after update... if version is different.

Any other info I should double check to make sure all is running OK?

The serial number is for the MBB, not the bike. The MBB and BMS both might be enumerated for the prior year, probably because of when the batch of hardware was produced for a revision.

The VIN can be decoded this way:

Yeah, the dealer didn't update your firmware and should. Be polite about it; it's just an oversight.

Any other info I should double check to make sure all is running OK?

Check it like any other motorbike, but it's probably fine.

Yes.. I actually bought it 6 hrs from here... and I'm going to a local dealership... they are really nice and helpful.

I was talking about the download report, any other info that I should look for? to make sure it is up-to-date. Thanks.

Is there a fee from the dealer to update the firmware or it is paid by Zero?

Is it really necessary to do the update? There are several post in here that things are not working properly after the update. Like when you update a computer... sometimes the new version has a bunch of things that are not really useful.

macstructures - Is there a fee for the owner? Nope, Zero takes care of that.
There's also been a discussion about 'motor commissioning' concerning who pays. I understand that's also Zero's responsibility.

Long answer - Please take the time to read the very first thread on this forum titled: Email From Zero: Updated Firmware and Charging Recommendations. It's currently seven (7) pages long but well worth the read.

Another document well worth your time would be to scan over the 'Zero Unofficial Service Manual'.

OK, I called the local dealer and they said that I will have to pay for 1 hr of labor, I think it is $95. I bought the motorcycle at another dealership, 6hrs from here, they had better incentives / discounts on the motorcycle price, if it was not that far I will go there.

OK.. I read before part of both documents... and learn a lot... it help me add a power adapter (cigaret lighter) on my motorcycle, by following the info on the "Zero Unofficial Service Manual" and advise from other members... always helpful.

I will read more today... thanks.

yeah.. dont pay that $95.
they sell zero motorcycles, that means they do warranty work.
assuming this is a new bike, under warranty, then they can charge their labor to Zero.
It doesnt matter that you didnt buy the bike from them.
