Title: Working Sheep
Post by: ctrlburn on May 19, 2017, 05:38:52 PM
Local farm's sheep wandered out - so I jumped on the Zero.

I wouldn't say "herding sheep" because these fellows don't need much instruction. This group was too far away to let the dog handle. (I don't know if my dog has the patience or restraint for longer distances - usually my dog barks a few times and they jump back through their break in the fence without a chase.)

Did not have a problem making them move forward. They might have been convinced it was their idea to head that way so it was a low stress event.

No splitters - a nice easy control of the pace.

But when I needed them to turn - I zipped up almost unnoticed without spooking them and set the corner.

Shouldn't this be in the "unexpected benefits" thread??

Have you tried your hand (or motorcycle) with cats yet?

I thought about that - but I don't know if it worked any better.
I do know it worked well. But wouldn't want to jump to conclusions and come out looking like a fool.

Will have to leave that "benefits" to someone who has experience in both spheres.

I'll never forget the amazing dogs I saw work a big herd to the top of a hill, circle it up tight , send in a seeker to find and take to ground sheep with some sort of bugs on their head, so the old guy could clamber out of his old truck with the old Alpha managing the other dogs from the hood while he ambled up and applied the medicine.

It was just amazing.

(For people outside of the UK, no this was not a joke, it really was Prime time telly in the 80's, and very popular too...
the competition still runs today, it's part of the Countryfile series of programmes though now )
