All happy after doing the routine checks, I rode off the lot here in Portland with my new Zero today. I hit the freeway and was looking forward to zipping by traffic...and hit a hard limit of 70 miles per hour. wtf?
Anyone that can shed some light on this one? Full charge, regular eco and sport modes, tucked, untucked, nothing made a difference. 70 MPH tops. I figure there's a delimiter somewhere, but I don't know why it's 70!

You have it in eco mode....use the mode switch on the right handle bar and change to sport or custom.

Missed the part about using eco or sport.....when you switch modes while riding you have to go to neutral throttle for the new mode to take affect. To be sure, change to sport while at a full stop and then give it a try.

Congrats on the new bike. Be extra careful in Sport Mode those first months. Maybe set up a Custom map with moderate torque but higher top speed for highway use... enjoy and be mindful of too much torque on slippery surfaces even things you might think you're used to can take some time to get used to.
You can change modes on-the-fly if you need it, just hit the mode button whilst riding and let off the throttle, when the bike is 59mph or less it will engage the pending mode. Even with only 17% custom torque setting the bike will still hit highway speeds it just takes a little longer. Setting a lower torque in custom mode is very helpful for frozen temperatures and loose gravel.

I was thinking that the guy bought a brand new bike and the salesman didn't bother doing a proper handover. Such a basic thing.
It's only an S, so I would dial everything up the maximum in custom mode and just use eco mode in the wet.

On my '14 S the mode change only takes effect after a complete stop. Am I the only one like this?

They changed it in 2015 so you only have to throttle off (not stop).

My 2014 SR will switch modes with neutral throttle if I'm moving at less than ~65mph.

RTFM (Read The F*****g Manual) is something my wife has told me many times. Ironically, this is one of the times I did read it. There's nothing that says eco mode limits you to 70, though. Or that you can't switch modes in mid-ride. /shrug That's why I asked ya'll, though, I'm not afraid to stop and ask for help.
That said, I took it out again on a custom setting and holy CRAP I own a carnival ride! 8)

Yeah, too much torque on an imperfect surface can spill you into a busy intersection. Ask me how I know.
I run my 2014 SR in custom mode at 85% torque now, and I switch to sport mode only on special occasions.

You are right... my bad. There is nothing in the owner's manual regarding the top speeds in the different modes. I know I read it somewhere... maybe it was in here. Sorry about that.
About all it says is: "The ECO selection reduces the acceleration and top speed of the motorcycle." Doesn't say to what speed it is reduced.
By the way, you can set whatever top speed you want in "Custom" mode. Helpful tip: It's a good way to avoid speeding tickets... You still get the awesome acceleration, but it'll limit your speed to below "I'm afraid we'll have to impound your vehicle, Sir" levels...

On my 2016 SR the minimum top speed I can set in Custom mode is 60. There have been a (very) few occaissions where I'd have liked to set it lower. I used to set it to 70, but after a close call on a freeway I decided I *always* need to be able to access max torque.
It would be great if Zeros had two custom settings ... would also be nice if they'd open-source the code for the app. I's also like a pet Unicorn.

This is actually quite a nice story. I'm sure you were quite satisfied with the performance in eco mode, except for the 70mph speed limit. I remember that feeling of getting a new toy as a kid and discovering it would do something I wasn't expecting. It was a revelation and lots of fun.

On my 15 FX I have to slow down to about 50 before the switch takes effect. It sucks when you hit the interstate in eco and realize you need more speed to keep from getting run over. And I always run in sport mode unless the roads are slick. And yesterday when I took my teenage daughter to work and the zoo. Used custom with zero coasting regen, full power and max top speed, and 80% brake regen to better stop the extra weight.

I'd let my brother throw a leg over my bike once, but just for a short spin, and he almost always rides two-up with his wife anyhow. So once when we were all three together with our two bikes, I offered another ride. When they got back, her comment was exactly what you said..."It's like a carnival ride!".
My brother told me she couldn't stop giggling the whole time they were on the bike. He also said he'd gone to about half throttle.
They have yet to offer me a ride on their Yam V-Star 950. I'm not terribly disappointed about that.
