Title: My new 2016 zero SR
Post by: David S on December 04, 2015, 03:27:08 AM
I've been reading about Zeros for months now, A dealer here in Las Vegas finally got the 2016 in and I was able to pick it up.

Wow riding a quiet SR through the desert at sunset could give a man enough peace and quiet and inner calm to solve all the worlds problems.

Or just go real fast.

You should share that photo with the Zero Facebook page, great shot.

If there is ever someone else in vegas with one I could do that. I sold my old gsxr 600 to a friend of mine, I might make a video racing him sometime.

I bought the last Zero that was sold by Carter here in Vegas before they stopped selling them.
I was unaware that they had a new dealer in Vegas. A quick search shows that the new dealer
is less than 10 miles from my house. I may have to take a ride over there on my day off.
I would be happy to race you, but, I am sure that your 2016 would spank my 2013 FX.
We could go riding some time though. It's going to be mid 60s next week, should be nice.
By the way, we have an electric vehicle meeting the 2nd Saturday of the month at
Gaudin Ford at 10 A.M. if you would like to stop by.
Congratulations on your new bike.

I don't think there's much point in racing another SR, but I would sure like to see what you would do to the Gixxer.

Congrats on your new 2016 SR. That top (big) photo would make a good profile photo (notice you don't have one yet). In fact that big photo is stunning!

Thanks grmarks. XM, It's incredible, its lived up to my expectations and I know i'll never be able to go back to a gas bike. Krazyed, depending on my sleep schedule i may be able to make it.

Congratulations David, with your new bike!

I have a '15 DS for 3 months now, and will probably never own a gas bike again.
Enjoy your smooth riding and accelerations over there.
I've been to Vegas 3 times and can imagine riding around.

Greetings from the cold and almost flat Netherlands (nice pics!)

I work in Valet at Green Valley Ranch. If you are ever in the area, swing by.
Also, the forecast is for 70 degrees on Tuesday, I am off then, maybe a ride.

Great photos David and congrats on your Zero!  Once you ride a Zero you will never want to ride a gas bike again! Trust me.  But if you like to take long trips, contact Hollywood Electrics about one of the many fast charging solutions.  The owner, Harlan, is in the Las Vegas Area 3-4 times a month.  But my guess is to get everywhere you want around Vegas you probably won't need it.  Just to let you know it exists if you feel you want to ride up and down the California coast like I believe everyone who has a Zero should experience. ;)   Again great choice on your bike!

Congratulations! Which accessories did you choose? I would like to know how that new J1772 charging port works. I have a '15 SR and use a J1772 adapter for longer rides.

How many miles on your odometer now?

I don't have any acceessories yet, but might get the charge tank eventually. I am at about 200 miles.

David,
it is so nice to hear from a another rider with a Zero SR that is here in Las Vegas. I just picked up my 2016 SR 3 weeks ago from a dealer in Arizona and its so sweet to know I have a Dealer in the same town now. I called them and they asked if I can show up this Saturday between 12-6 for some kind of event. I will be there and hope I can meet you there also. I have around 430 miles on it so far and would have even more if it was not for the cold weather that we have been getting lately. As you can see I got some of the accessories on it and love them.

Is the event at major power sports? I may be able to go by for a bit. I'm glad there is a dealer in town too, I hope they sell more so they keep carrying them, I knew more about the bike than they did when I picked it up.

Post by: melbrader on December 17, 2015, 10:53:47 PM
That's funny I got the same feeling when I was talking to them. Yes the event is at Major PowerSports on Sahara Ave. I'm looking forward going and meeting other Zero people to chat with about such and amazing motorcycle.. Are you having much luck driving in the cooler weather lately? I guess they are going to demo some of the Zero motorcycle that day and just think we can answer all the tough question that some of the people will ask the dealer...

I wish that i was able to go. Unfortunately, I work Saturday at 11 in Henderson. I have been riding my FX in the Cooler weather. Not bad as long as the sun is out.
Since I live across town, and, head home well after dark, I take my cars when nighttime temperatures are below 60 ( WUSS ). Pretty nice riding during the day on
my days off though. I see that they open at 9 a.m. on Saturday. I may swing by there on my way to work in my Electric Focus. Still too cold to ride home at night. ( WUSS )

That's the time I ride also when the sun is shining. I think the event starts at 12:00 being they have some kind of food of some type. but they are doing demo rides for the Zero all day long from what I was told. KrazyEd what type of motorcycle do you have is it a 2013 FX if so how do you like it?
Title: Re: My new 2016 zero SR
Post by: KrazyEd on December 18, 2015, 10:57:12 PM
It IS a 2013 FX Set up as super moto with S front end and brake, and, the good rear shock.
I LOVE it. I set the gearing for higher speed. Went to 30 front, but, couldn't wheelie at all.
Went to 28, can now ALMOST wheelie. Can bring it up from a dead stop, but, can't really
carry it. I was planning to take ti to the drag strip where the stock gearing would limit
it's overall performance, never got around to it. YET. Stock gearing would put it through
the first half better, but, it would hit top speed and just sit there. Hopefully, the taller
gearing will let it hit top speed around the end. So much lighter than my ICE bikes.

That's so cool it sounds like you love yours like I love mine. I just cant wait until it gets a little warmer so that I can be on it everyday from sunrise to sunset. I'm looking forward on seeing if the new motor will run a little cooler in this hot climate. have you had any problems with the nice hot climate that we get here in the summer? and another thing are you reading the full capacity from you APP (phone), mine show about 1 kw short but I think it might be from the colder temps that we are getting.  What's you thought on this? I've only had mine for 3 weeks now so I'm just not sure if that's the case.
Title: Re: My new 2016 zero SR
Post by: KrazyEd on December 19, 2015, 11:28:47 AM
I think that my 5.7 shows 5.036 at 100%. If I plug it in, and, let it charge until it stops, it usually reads 95%.
I discovered by accident that if I unplugged it, then, plugged it back in, it would hit 97%. When I saw that,
I tried it again, and, got 100%. Probably not a good idea to do this on a regular basis. I have noticed that
if it is at 100%, I MIGHT get an extra mile or two. I have an external charger that also seems to bring it to
100% charge when used in conjunction with the stock charger. Your SR has a 1.3 KW charger, my FX is
a .650 KW. With BOTH chargers going, I charge marginally faster than your SR does with single charger.
I am planning to go to Major Powersports in the morning on my way to work. The GOAL is to leave here
around 7:30 or so in my Electric Focus. Go to NV Energy on the corner of Jones and Sahara, plug in,
and, walk across the street to Major. Have to leave that early, otherwise, I dawdle around here until
I don't have time for anything other than going straight to work. If you see a Blue Focus charging with
an old guy asleep in the passenger seat, go ahead and tap on the glass. LOL
Title: Re: My new 2016 zero SR
Post by: melbrader on December 23, 2015, 10:43:10 PM
That's funny and I will tap on the glass if I see you asleep anytime is see you there. My quick charge turns off at 97% charged and then my on board brings it to the 100%. so I have had no problems bringing it to a 100% but I can never come close to the 15.9 KW being I have the added power tank. I hope its that fact that it is cold and give me a lower reading because of that. not too sure if that would be the case but 1.5 kw is a lot of power that I would love to have. my record of 206 mile is the best that I have done on what I can get to show on the remanding distance. so that is good but I have to ride it very nice and easy. I have had quite of few motorcycles and this is one of my favorite that I have owned...

I was there last Saturday from 12 to around 1 so I must have missed you and that's too bad because I was looking forward meeting you and David to talk about the Zero's. if I was not at work I would also like to join you there . I did ride to work this morning not to bad once everything gets frozen on your body then it's just starts to be numb and you cant tell if your cold or not. lol  I just cant wait for the warmer weather so that I can put some real mileage on it. but not to bad at 700 miles with lest then a month time In the winter.

Sorry I wasnt able to make it. Off topic but does anyone know how to use the zero app? I pair it and nothing seems to work on it. All i can find is a drive set up which displays things like "eco top speed, eco max regen" Ive tried to change these but it does nothing different in custom mode. I set eco top speed to 60 to test it but it still can go faster.

I was there and gone on Saturday LONG before the party started. I had to work as well.
Pulled out from the house this morning on the FX, it was mid 40s. Wasn't really cold at all.
Home well before sun went down though.
As far as the app goes, it is usually pretty straight forward. My 2013 FX is easy, only
two modes, program in ECO. My understanding of the newer bikes is that changes
take place in the custom mode. Feel free to contact me via P/M and, I will give you
my number, and, we can see what can be figured out. Will also be at work tomorrow
morning ( 24th ) at 8 a.m. feel free to stop by.

Thanks, I finally got it to work, not sure why it wasnt earlier.

For my 2016 SR, the bike has to be "on" for it to work.  In charging mode, the phone sees the bike's bluetooth but the app kills the connection.  If the key is in the on position, I can get it to connect and change "custom" settings.

Of course, the app still thinks it's a 2013, and after that first day where I got it to work and set my "custom" top speed to 80mph, I haven't opened the app since... :)

I had an issue where mine would start then "crash". I finally figured that if i stopped trying to access the opening screen,
all other screens and options seem to work. I thought that the screen might not have been programmed for HD.
I recently switched to a OnePLus Two phone, and, that screen seems to work, so, may just have been that the bike didn't
get along with my Note 3 and Lollipop. Mine is a 2013, so, I wouldn't notice if the year was wrong.
I DO notice that when the app first fires up, or, is in Demo mode or, hasn't yet connected to the bike that a "generic" S Model
is on that screen.
If the bike is charging, everything seems to work the same as if it is turned on. Again, it may be something with it being a 2013.
My DigiNow dongle also works while off and charging.

My 2016 SR works word for word like Eolas does (above). I do think they need to do an update to try to work out some of the bugs. but I do love the app. when I'm charging I love the way that I can check the status in my house and not have to go outside to see what state of charge it is at. all I'm thinking of is when the warmer weather is coming. I have to be at work no latter then 6:00 am and its been around 26* and being from Las Vegas I'm just to much of a wimp to ride and it makes me so depressed. :-\. I hope everybody is enjoying there Zero like I am..
Title: Re: My new 2016 zero SR
Post by: KrazyEd on December 30, 2015, 12:52:09 AM
I have an older phone mounted on the handlebar to use as my "dash". The only thing that I look at the instrument cluster for is the speed.
I don't do speed on the phone as it is redundant to the bike's speedometer. I don't really "need" all 5 windows, it would be nice to be able
to choose fewer larger windows, or, more smaller windows. I realize that several of the app features are redundant, but, my 2013 FX has fewer
options on the dash than the newer models.
Title: Re: My new 2016 zero SR
Post by: melbrader on December 30, 2015, 10:57:44 PM
Yes I agree with more options for what you want to see on the screen. I just got my mount to hold my iPhone 6 plus so we will see how that works but its been kind of cold up here in Las Vegas so not riding much. :(  Are you all getting time to ride in the winter time? or is it just me that just cant handle to cold.
Title: Re: My new 2016 zero SR
Post by: KrazyEd on December 31, 2015, 07:41:27 AM
I actually took the FX out yesterday for a few miles. Battery temperature was 61 degrees, but, range was absolutely horrid.
Not sure if it is just overall cold,  battery starting to weaken, or, needs to be exercised. Bike was at 91%, plugged in 2nd charger,
and, between the two, topped off to 100%. Previously when riding consistently, I would get about a mile on the first 3%, then,
maybe another mile on the next 2%. After that, it was about 1% per mile overall. Yesterday, it dropped from 100 to 97 after
.4 miles. Then to 95 by the end of the first mile. Total ride was 5 or 6 miles, and, it had dropped to 86%. Seldom if ever went
over 30 amps, mostly in the single digits, so, wasn't because of hard riding.

I think that it is the cold because I have been riding an electric scooter now for 5 years and that is very common with the electric scooters. so I think you should be good when it starts to warm up. The next time I go out riding I will see what I get per percentage just for fun and will let you know. My next 3 days I will have off and I will be out riding  ;D with a smile on my face thinking how lucky I am in owning a Zero.....

What do you actually get as your 100% charge? I'm in the same boat as you and only got 14.5 kWh on 100% - about freaked out and posted another thread on here - dealer is 2 hrs away and I barely have time to take it there to pick it up, let alone repairs -

My 2014 S has a nominal capacity of 14.2 kWh.  Fully charged the Zero app says my PT bike has 13.34 kWh.  It sounds like your bike is right on the money, considering your cells are a little more power dense than mine.   :)

My coldest ride so far was 31 degrees, and the 2016 SR went from 100% to 61% on the ride to work (32 miles).  It's part of why I waited 'til the 2016, I wanted the extra battery size as a safety margin, so I'd know any time of year, I could make it to work and back if I needed to...

Eplas,
Does your SR have the tank? because being cold it seems that you are doing good on the distance. My last trip last night with a passenger it was 29 miles and I had 74% left but I have the tank and it was in town driving.

Nope, I waited for the 2016 in part because it'd have enough range to get me to work and back without the tank... and almost my whole commute is highway miles, but no passenger. :)
