Title: Here's something I learned today about free charging
Post by: Mike Werner on September 21, 2014, 10:57:18 PM
Maybe you all know this, but for me this was a first; Today I went to visit a colleague journo from Belgium who was staying in a camping with a camping car. I did the journey on my BMW C Evolution, and was at 45% used when I arrived at the camping, a bit on the short side for the journey home.

I asked the owner of the camping if I could charge somewhere, and she took me to an outlet for the camping cars. She told me they use special plugs which can be bought, which you use to plug in your 220V cable.

She said here in France most camping have them, as do many parking areas in cities meant for camping cars. She said most camping sites wouldn't object you using their outlets if no one is using them, as long as I ask. Cities have then freely available.

She loaned me a converter cable, and an hour later I could race back home with enough charge?

So I found a free and plentiful source of electricity.

We have RV Parky in United States and all of them have 50 amp outlets that any electric vehicle can use to charge.  That's how I traveled 6000 miles this summer.

The electricity is already out there!

It's funny that it's not so widely known. Can make a great difference for long rides.

Cool, that's what I'm gearing towards. Just got the camping car plugs, and contacted BMW who are working on several fast charger plugs as optional extras.

I got my NEMA 14-50 from Quick Charge Power (http://www.quickchargepower.com/ (http://www.quickchargepower.com/)).  It is only for that one type of outlet, and I'd like to see him develop a set of adapters for most plugs.  It would be handy for those of us with a sense of adventure!
