Title: Terry Hershner goes 1,000 miles in 24 hours: Iron Butt
Post by: benswing on September 17, 2014, 08:26:51 AM
Terry successfully traveled 1046.7 miles in 22 hours 57 minutes, using 126.883 kWh electricity to carry 950 pounds at speeds of 70-80 mph that distance, or 121 Wh per mile (including charger losses) at 75 mph average.

He went from Chargepoint HQ in San Jose, CA to the Mexico border and back overnight.  I followed him much of the way via Glympse and he made it with time to spare.

Check out his facebook page for more info.  http://www.facebook.com/lifeoffthegrid (http://www.facebook.com/lifeoffthegrid)

Shhhhhhh, he's sleeping now.  ;-)

Ben take a look to what I have calculated:

I calculated the numbers terry got and this correspond very precisely to the prediction Optitrip EV calculator i shared with him

Average speed look very similar too!

Efficiency: 9.18km per kWh(AC)

average charge power(estimated by Terry): 18kW

average total charging time: 126.883kWh / 18 = 7hours of charging

Estimated time to prepare charging: 0.5 total

Driving time: 23h - 7h - 0.5h = 15.5 hours of driving

Average speed: 1694km = 15.5h = 109km/h

Hey Doc,  --I just recently acquired a pair of 2.5kW ElCon chargers and J1772 & NEMA 14-50 harnesses for my '14SR with power tank.  Any chance you might share your OptiTrip-EV calculator-spreadsheet? My Excell skills are not that great...   :-[   ...and the charging stations are pretty sparse outside of the metro areas!

Thanks!

Terry do you plan on writing a blog or article about your experience?

I have done 1000 miles in 24 hours in my car when I went to MN a couple weeks ago and it was crazy. Toward the end I was fighting myself to stay awake and thankfully only "almost" veered into another lane twice. I was only partially prepared for the trip though as I didn't pack provisions for the tiredness stage. If i did it again I would several amenities which would give me a boost of stable long lasting energy without making me tired and then something lightly caffeinated to go with lit later in the day.

I just ran across an ad in one of my motorcycle magazines for a subscription to the Ironbutt magazine.  It is $20 per year for a subscription or a single issue is $5.95.  You can check it out at:  www.ironbutt.com/ibmagazine (http://www.ironbutt.com/ibmagazine)
