Here is an interesting article describing the "heads up displays" that are being developed for future ($$$) motorcycle helmets. I sure would like to have one. :)

It figures that you would see the technology first in the bicycle market. Some of those bicycle riders spend more money on their sport than we do on our motorcycles. :) On the other hand, I sure wouldn't want to drop or misplace those high-tech sunglasses. :o

I tried to get them to send me a demo unit but I haven't heard back from them.
I mentioned I use a Reevu helmet and that company is also making a HUD helmet to supplement their rear view system. I probably also mentioned I put on 16k miles a year and ride all year round.
Would love to test out competition.

Bicycles move slower so refresh rate is less of an issue. Any lag on a rear view camera system could be a very serious problem. I don't think getting messages and twitter updates etc. in your helmet is a good idea. We have enough distractions on the road already, just look at car drivers.
Burton; do you find the Reevu is a distraction when cornering? Especially when making progress above the limit. I'd worry about motion sickness or something if i could always see behind me.

I don't typically use it while cornering. I use it as a real rear view mirror reducing head checks. I also use it to check exit / on ramps before merging. And I use it passively, that is not directly looking at it, to keep track of targets behind me.

I love this helmet too much to get another one. Having the extra information is just too valuable at this point. I do know several in AU who use this helmet while racing to better see where their opponents are behind them so they can better judge braking into corners.
As far as motion sickness I don't think you would have any. More than 30 minutes on a train, bus, or 1 hour in a car, or 3 hours in an airplane with someone else driving and I cannot be on that vehicle any longer. I never get motion sickness riding a bike or flying a helicopter though. I have never found the helmet to give me any sensation close to motion sickness and I have gone on 500+ mile day trips into the mountains and back just fine.

I've actually had a HUD for my helmet in 2005. I had it installed on my KTM using SportVue HUD set up. I worked very well, but was a bit limited in functions. But seeing speed and gear was a life saver, especially when off-roading. So with the progress of technology, things should get more interesting....
