Title: Street tires for Zero DS?
Post by: rotoiti on May 16, 2012, 11:32:38 PM
I have put 1500 miles on my DS in a month but I never took my DS offroad. I am thinking about putting street tires on it. Any recommendations?

While on the subject of tires, when should I expect to change existing tires? I read somewhere that the tires should be changed at 5,000 miles but that seems too short.

Avon Roadrider AM26 would fit.

As for replacing, usually when the tread gets down to the wear bars (don't go that far if you're riding in the rain). Otherwise age plays a factor, the rubber will "harden" and dry rot might start setting in.

Note that the build date of the tire is imprinted on the sidewall.  My understanding is that tires should be fine if they are less than 5 years old.  However, you do want to keep them out of the sun as much as possible and they don't like ozone much, either.

Good question...  After a number of Google searches, all I can find in the 110/90-16 size are "FRONT" tires.

How much are a pair of "S" wheels?  Yikes!

I'll report back when I get the Avon Roadrider 100/80-17 & 120/80-16 set that I just ordered installed... should be close enough!?

As long as there's enough clearance with the 110/90-16 then 120/90-16 shouldn't be too drastic. With the clearance of the OEM size on my XU I really can't go wider on the rear tire. Also, one could always run a 110/90-16 FRONT tire on the REAR, they do it in the CBR125R cup here with no ill effects.

Just got the UPS tracking number....  I expect the rear 120/80 to be 5mm / about 0.2" fatter on each side [10mm total] and about 97% the diameter of a 110/90.  Hopeful!

Good rec!  Got my Avon Roadriders installed on my '12 DS [ZF6] today [at Road Rider M/C Accy's on Monterrey Hwy;] and am VERY happy with the results.  The 120/80V16 fits just fine on the back.  A visit to Lick Observatory this afternoon was a nice break-in for the tires; the 19 mile ride up left me with 4 bars showing.  Took the long way home; total trip was 43.3 miles and 1 blinking bar on the 'fuel' gage...

It appears they spiffed up the pavement on Mt Hamilton road, with gorgeous smooth asphalt [for the Tour of California bikers?]...  Love it!

I'm thinking about doing the same thing to my 2011 DS. Would you mind posting a pic with the Roadriders installed? Thanks!

hi all

so we are converting to road tyres -- or is that we want to have these for the usual riding and swap to noobies when we go offroad. I thought a lot about this and got an S (2011) as I do mostly street.
now last time at the beach, in the deep sand I was obviously at a loss --- but otherwise I try to go with my S anywhere, anyway....

Thanks! How about one shot of the entire bike with the Roadriders? Trying to get a sense of how the DS looks with street tires...

Hey Rick, can you share how much you paid for the set? I will need to get new tires in about 1k miles or so so this should be a good time to think about ordering them.

I found them later on J.C. Whitney for $26 less than I paid; forget exactly what that was...

And street tires on a vintage 2010 DS.   These were installed by the original owner so I can't tell you were to get them.  On the sidewalls are "Duro DM 1057" and "140/70-16" (rear) and "Duro DM 1060" and "110/70-16" (front).

Hi RickSteeb,

ridding your Avon Roadrider for 1 month, are you still satisfied?

I like the optic 8) too, as I see it is possible for me to have the 110/90 or 120/80 what would you prefer?

Could you see a difference in maxspeed or is the 97% less diameter not noticeable?

Thanks for sharing your experience.

I'm very happy with the Roadriders.  They feel very sticky/confident in curves, and the ride is super-smoooth and quiet compared with the enduro-style tread stockers.  I think I prefer the 120/80's wider profile, and it still hits 80 MPH if I let it!

 :)

Tanks RickSteeb,

I have to admit the 110/90 is a front tire, the home page didn't tell it, but at Avons side it is clear there are no rear tire in 110/90.

So I have to go to our TÜV and need the paper work :'(

But I think I will go for the Avons

I think I remember seeing your bike.  It looks almost like the same bike.  Nice looking bikes.  Thanks

I have a 2012 Zero DS, the rear tire is worn out at 3200 miles!  Found a Shinko rear street tire 110/90-16 from JPCycles for $48.99 + $7.99 shipping, will post later to see how well it holds up!

My rear tire is about to hit the wear mark (I am at 3,800 miles). I just ordered the same set of Avon Roadriders as RickSteeb from motorcycle-superstore.com. I paid $196.98 (with free shipping) for the set. Will report back with pictures when I have them installed.

And the tires were installed today, no pictures though since the bike is now at the dealer, awaiting new charger installation.

I just ordered a 130/70-17 rear tire from Motorcycle Superstore.  I decided on a Michelin Pilot Activ tire.  $111.99 to my door.  The stock rear tire seems to be wearing rapidly for some reason (about what I would expect from a sport radial tire), but the front tire looks like it will last forever. I figure I will change it sometime later this year and wanted to have it in my closet ready to go.  I also wanted to make the purchase before Congress makes all internet retailers collect local sales tax, which I understand is likely to be approved in the near future.

Dealer found the Avon's before I had to chance to check here.  Quite a difference from the 2010 knobbies I was running.
So much quieter and a new level of fun to ride has been reached.  I worked on the lean turns in a parking lot today to get the nubs off the edges and get comfortable with the new lean angles.  Very sweet ride!
