Over on the home build section I get toasted for giving realistic replies to newbies who say "I want to build a bike that does 100 mph for 100 miles and I have 3000 dollars to spend on the conversion". From now on I can just point them to this post where a bike that has just about those specs cost 150 000 pounds to build...

You're probably right, but I don't know how to crush dreams and have people like it. I tried a long (multi page) and detailed post that explored the various options, limiting cases, the pros and cons, the actual formulae used to calculate the physical requirements to meet the stated requirements. I was accused of being bias, working for evil corporations and presenting shonky figures. Of course my accuser couldn't actually come up with any examples that refuted what I said, or point out any errors in my math, just that it was "Bias" and my math "shonky". Then I tried a single sentence that summed up why the absurd dreams were absurd, clearly, distinctly and accurately. Now I'm "unhelpful". Eventually I was goaded into responding I put up another multi page post explaining the reasoning behind the single sentence, why each word was what it was. [sarcasm] Gee, wasn't that well received [/sarcasm].
Should I follow the lead of some of the other posters and just make supportive noises that will lead others to expense and dissapointment?
Or just shut up?

I don't want you to shut up, you know your stuff. I would keep doing what you do. Just welcome the guys first if he's a noob is all i'm say'n. you know the cliche, "constructive criticism".
-
I'll try harder.
Perhaps not that good with people.
