Title: Capacitor and battery research
Post by: Richard230 on May 01, 2011, 04:21:21 AM
My newspaper reports that the DOE is finding research at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH, that "might make batteries obsolete in electric vehicles". The article reports that "a $2.25 million grant will help complete development of a small, light, powerful and reliable capacitor that promises at least a 10-fold hike in energy density over current designs".

The next article says that "proponents of batteries haven't thrown in the towel just yet". A team at the University of Illinois has a new battery system that it says offers all the benefits of batteries and capacitors in one unit. Materials science and engineering professor Paul Braun says his system gives "capacitor-like power with battery-like energy". Braun told Gizmag that his batteries can charge and discharge 10-100 times faster than their conventional counterparts.

Sounds great. Hope to see that in a product some time sooner than later.
