Some researchers seem to think that diesel-powered vehicles are cleaner and better for the environment than electric-powered vehicles. Read about it here:

The first paragraph of this article in Visordown says:
A RECENT investigation carried out by Swiss environmental experts has found that modern diesel engines are actually better for the environment than battery-powered ones.
Actually, that's not even close to what the study says. It even misstates the very minor portion of the article that touches on this subject. The actual report is about the environmental impact of Lithium ion batteries, which it concludes is pretty small.
Still, it was interesting to read the debate in the comments on visordown.
