There was an article in the business section of my newspaper yesterday which said that a bipartisan bill is being considered in the U.S. House of Representatives that would impose a yearly $130 tax on all electric-only powered vehicles. It would require states to impose that tax on top of their vehicle registration fees and pass the money to government, along with the usual 18.7 cents per gallon fuel tax. Hybrid vehicles would be charged only a small fraction of that fee. It was noted in the article that very few ICE vehicle owners pay as much as $130 a year in gasoline taxes. This tax is to help pay for the maintenance and repair of highways in America. It was also noted that the tax hasn't been increased in about 20 years. It seems likely that this bill might pass in the House, but its fate in the Senate is uncertain. If it passes both houses of Congress, President Trump is very likely to sign it into law.
Needless to say, electric motorcycles were not mentioned as being exempt in the proposed law. Unfortunately, if this law passes, I wouldn't be surprised if motorcycles end up being lumped into the electric vehicle category and also get hit with this tax each year, even though electric motorcycles have a vastly smaller impact on highways than electric cars or trucks.

if they want to do it properly they should charge all vehicles period. by mileage.
if you drive a lot you pay more if you drive a little you pay less, every year you renew and pay the miles you drove.
that is fair and it's totally unbiased, it goes by miles not what you drive.
they'll fuck it somehow to rape ev owners. they'll have to pay double to pay for the 'have nots' who can't afford a vehicle registration or some 'greater good' bullshit. watch, commiefornia will come out with something stupid like to push their marxism on the masses.
i can understand the idea, and all politicians love new ways to fuck the working class, but, when are we EVER going to start seeing them actually repairing these highways? why should we pay one more dime for highway upkeep when the existing money is being pissed away and not used properly?

I get 815 gallons of gasoline with a federal tax of 18.4 cents a gallon to come out to the $150.00
The lady at moror vehicles in Parkersburg Wv charged me an extra $200 to register my Kawasaki hybrid that cannot be plugged in. At least not the way delivered. It is a hundred a year. The covid era plexiglass and background noise made it pointless trying to discuss it.
Not sure how Connecticut would handle it as they keep making the registration periods longer for more up front money.
Ct does not have annual vehicle inspections, and I would expect no emissions data for ev's to get mileage on vehicles. Make everyone have a transponder.

The tabs on my Experia were $404 this year. My Zero SR: $325. We already have an EV surcharge in Washington. Now the Feds want to add another $150. It's no wonder so many people skip renewing their tabs. It is a secondary offense to not renew tabs. You can't get pulled over for expired tabs. They can tack on the fine if you get pulled over for a moving violation.
