Hi all,
just bought a used 2020 SR/F, when I test rode it there was a slight rattly noise when coasting and not under load, but as I'd driven 5 hours and I thought the price was good I took a risk, thinking it may be the motor bearings.
So now I have the belt off there's a good amount of play in the front pulley, which I'm assuming isn't normal.
Any advise on how to get the pulley bolt out?
I'm hoping it's the pulley that's worn and not the shaft!

why would you think bad motor bearings is an acceptable risk?

I'd driven 5 hours and the price was good price (I think), and I'd thought it should/may be possible to replace the bearings, I'm in New Mexico and there are no Zeros for sale anywhere near me.

not too familiar with it but might be reverse thread so they don't loosen up from torque ... for when it comes time to break them loose. not sure if you tried or not, but make sure you are not accidentally tightening.
is there any loctite on it that you can see. i think i remember seeing somewhere that they used red on it, in which case, that stuff sucks you might need to heat it, careful of overheating if bearings and stuff right there. will have to hold the pulley tight somehow so it don't move when you try loosening the bolt, maybe some kind of like wrench on it like an oil can wrench or what you'd call that, or a pulley puller / jigged up bearing puller to hold it?
hopefully, its not splined, as that play could indicate other problems.

I had the same problem with my 2020 SR/S. The splines on the inside of the pully are too soft and wear, allowing the pully to rattle when not under load. Everything sounds fine when accelerating or decelerating, as you've taken up the freeplay in the pully rotation. Zero upgraded the pully. I don't have the new part number handy, but you should find it online at any of the major dealers.

I've found the workshop manual which has 2 pages with the steps, I've got a butane torch so hopefully that'll heat it enough to release the Loctite, I think the tricky part will be holding the pulley in place as I don't have an old belt, I may try the belt that is on the bike and see if I can fold it around, and make sure it doesn't get damaged. That was a lot easier than I thought, I bound the rear wheel and brake up, and tried loosening the bolt before heating it up to release the Loctite, and it came out, possibly it already had one pulley replaced? it's only down 10000 miles but maybe it had been thrashed?
Any way, very pleased it wasn't as difficult as some others have experienced.
It looks like the pulley has taken the majority of the wear and the shaft is ok, maybe.
I'll order a new pulley, put it on and see if there's any play, and apply some Loctite 680 on the shaft and 271 on the bolt.

Mine looked very similar to yours. The damage was to the pulley, not the shaft. With the new pulley fitted there was no freeplay

Look at the stampings on the sheeve.
Looks like (relative) soft metal.
