Title: 2022 Energica Essesse9+ Titusville FL $2,000
Post by: gcash056 on December 11, 2025, 07:03:36 AM
Black with blue. 11,528 miles. Michelin Road 5 tires with 3.7K on them.

Will not charge now. It was my main local transportation, then the HV power supply failed, and it sat at the dealer for 11 months before Energica admitted to going bankrupt. I paid to have it sent to Energica in San Francisco and serviced. A couple months later, it would only charge to 85%. A couple months after that, it would only charge to 60%. Now when you turn it on or insert the J-1772, it says "Battery Depleted Charge Now" and shuts off. It doesn't attempt to charge.

I no longer have the energy or patience to get a new battery installed. Hopefully someone here can do that or part it out.

I have the title, of course.

Modifications:
Sargent seat
Energica of New England seat latch knob
Stahlbus brake bleeders
Bar-end mirrors

Accessories:
Energica welcome kit with manual & keys
3 sets of front brake pads
2 front sprockets
2 rear sprockets

Might want to bring a couple burly guys along... when I had to get it into a U-Haul to take to the dealer, I needed a couple folks to help push it up the ramp. It's HEAVY.

out of curiosity, do you ever charge it / did you with a CCS fast charge?
two different methods of charging, am curious if that one ever charged for you or gave you grief as well.
i know you can't get there now but just curious if it gave you the low percentage issues as well at end of charge.
did you ever look in the engineering screen to see what it said the voltage is at when it claimed it was fully charged?

whomever gets it, about the only viable option at this point would be to open it up, see which cells went bad and repair them, you can't swap out the battery w/o re-marrying the new one to the existing equip, which would be another trip to san fran, or if the dealer in orlando still works on them, but i think he's 404.

Yup, when it started charging to only 85%, I made a special trip to the nearest station, which is the ElectrifyAmerica station about 40 miles away. It fast charged up to 70% then took nearly an hour to charge to 82% at which point I lost patience.

Edit: I also charged with a friend's L2 charger, and it only hit 85% before stopping the charge session. When I plugged it back it, it would simply just not continue with a charging session, same as my charger. I rode it home, it charged back up to 85% and that was it.

No... sorry, I don't know what engineering screen you're talking about.

Also FYI, this is different behavior from when the HV supply died. When that happened, the bike was simply dead, and when you turned the key or plugged in the charger, nothing happened. No lights, no sounds, nothing.

OK, so I have heard from half a dozen independent sources that Energica batteries are unobtainium, so there's no point bothering other people trying to get rid of this.

It cost me nearly $2,700 to ship it to San Francisco and back last time, and that's not counting parts & labor refurbishing/replacing the battery.

The junkyards and landfills don't take electric vehicles, even with the battery removed.

A friend wants to take the battery through Haulover and drop it in the Atlantic and see what happens when it hits salt water. Probably nothing.

We'll disassemble it, probably keep the Brembo calipers as desk ornaments and reminders to never buy an EV again, and fly-tip the rest.

Thanks, all.

Perhaps Redwood Materials will take the battery?

Sorry for your negative experiences in EV.
Hopefully they were offset a bit with some positives.

Do what you want but at the very least it's a part-out bike worth at least $1k.  Hell the motor alone is worth that to someone with a project.

Everything depends on if they go back into production or not with this new group that bought them.

I think that group may have under estimated the cost to make these bikes when they bought it but we'll see what they can do.

gcash if you need to get rid of the battery, ill take it off your hands for you, i can safely be rid of it.
this just seems like you got a cell that went crazy out of balance and it just drifted to the moon.   my race bike was doing that for a time until i did a long balance on it to bring everything back in.

if it won't charge at all, won't even start, thats an issue but i know a way to maybe hotshot it, kind ofl ike i have to do to my lawnmower to wake it up after a snooze.

Even if you did get a new battery you would not be able to put it in, they are not swappable w/o re programming the new battery's.. lets call it serial number, so the rest of the stuff say, yah it's part of the family, lets talk to it.  you'd have to take it to a dealer or san fran it still.

you might be able to open it up, find the bad cell / cells manually charge them or at least bump them so the bitch turns on, then do a charge, and long balance.

fyi my racer started balancing at 76 percent before i fixed the problem.  they do drift especially if you do not top them off and do a full charge weekly or so.

if you want i could come pick it up, or take a look at it for you at least.  im not saying you are stupid or anything but would like to try a few things before you just throw in the towel for good, trust me i know how frustrating and disappointing it can get.

lmk,   also if you drink coffee id love to bring you some of my home roast.

Sorry for your negative experiences in EV.
Hopefully they were offset a bit with some positives.

Well, it's like I tell people... EVs are great - until they break, and then you get to keep both pieces. I've replaced it with a Tracer 9GT+

It does not help of course, that there's very little EV charging infrastructure in Florida. Also, I've noticed a stark decline in the state of it in the past 2 years... you roll up to a station and less than 50% of the chargers are functioning. There's been lots of times I've ended up somewhere NONE of the chargers work... and the apps say they're functional. And I'm screwed because the distance to the next charger is about my remaining range. Or more.

Even if you did get a new battery you would not be able to put it in, they are not swappable w/o re programming the new battery's.. lets call it serial number, so the rest of the stuff say, yah it's part of the family, lets talk to it.  you'd have to take it to a dealer or san fran it still.

Bingo. As Adam Savage would say "THERE'S YER PRAHBLEM"

That's inexcusable. That's like saying "oh you can put in new brake calipers, but then you need the dealer to use his special tool to attach them, and you can't buy that special tool"

That's the main problem with EVs. When they break, they're a proprietary system that no one can work on and usually no one can get parts for.

So it's an expensive paperweight. Like the Energica in my garage. Doing nothing, just taking up space. Non-repairable.

Look at all the issues that NewZeroLand (YouTube) had getting his Zero working again.

Contrast that with my '07 FJR-1300 I've kept running for nearly 20 years. Yamaha published a 5" thick service manual, and I can still buy parts for it 20 years later. Sure, it took 4 days to dig the starter out and replace it, but it was possible.

It's a waste to sink any more money in this. I'm going to take this as a painful and expensive learning experience and move on.

Well, I posted this on the Energica Owners Group on Facebook. Maybe that will draw some traffic. At least get you a few dollars for it, or at the very least not cost you anything to get rid of it.

If you do end up parting it, or being open to parting out some of it, please let me know. Depending on the parts I may be interested. I'll PM as well.

I'm curious what you ended up doing with the big battery?

I second that. If my Zero battery ever died, I have no idea how I would get rid of it. My local recycling/garbage company sure wouldn't take it.

There are some places that would take the battery but they might charge you for it.
not sure about where he lives, but here in jax the city has a hazwaste where you can bring batteries, paint, oil, stuff like that to dispose of properly.  im pretty sure many places in florida have the same kind of facilities.

i offered to take it off his hands, and even pay for it but well, he was disgusted with it all.  Can't say I blame him, that kind of stuff gets real frustrating.  it's a shame he threw it into the dump, i know many people who'd have paid well for the motor / inverter, a lot of things, that's a few grand right there, id have popped a grand or so for the battery if he wanted to sell after opening and inspecting.  20kw of storage with only 4 years, it's got plenty of life left for solar storage.  even the insurance companies when these bikes get totalled, the salvage price is like 3400 dollars, that's what they put on my experia, i tried to argue but they said, once it's sent for 'destruction' that's basically scrap price.  if he had full coverage on it, that's a claim there with most companies.  it was not his fault, and not normal wear and tear, or 'shit just happened'.  like getting water in your diesel fuel and destroying the injection system, insurance paid for repairs once it was shown the water got in at the gas station... without getting too nitty, it'd been a bit of a back and forth, (yah i know you said fuck it, ive done that too on some things) but a few grand would have been a nice down payment on a new whatever bike.

just saying.

FWIW, for those wondering, where could i get rid of stuff like that when the time comes...look up robotics clubs and geek stuff like that where you live, the colleges most all of them have them, they'd love to get servo's, batteries, hi torque motors, controllers for their projects, and the fact it's a 'refurb' further fit's into the nerd-cred, so.. yeah. im talking with a guy from one of the classes they teach up here in jax on EV battery maint, care, etc etc about some things now in fact.

A Tesla wall is only 14 kW so yeah a 20 kW should be worth something, to someone who already knows what they are doing or wants to learn with a project.

A matched motor and controller are supposed to be pretty valuable to enthusiasts for go-cart type things.

Then there's the fully functional rolling chassis. That's pretty valuable for someone who wants to throw a 2-stroke in it. :)
