In the latest California fiasco, the state had a well-advertised plan to offer 1,000 $2,000 vouchers to low income residents that they could apply to purchase a new E-bike at a retail store. The plan was to allow residents to apply on-line, starting at 5pm last night for a period of one hour. The last time the vouchers were offered, 100K applications were received. But this time when people tried to apply for the E-bike vouchers, they were met with a message saying that due to "technical difficulties" the program has been "suspended indefinitely". Stay tuned for the next version of the E-bike voucher plan.

technical difficulty = they shut down the program we were using to steal the money from.
half the time meth heads get the vouchers and sell them to others for their drug money.
hey, here's a 1000 cupon off that bike, give me 200 for it.
same thing with food stamps, they can only buy certain foods ,ill get you 100 dollars of steaks if you come out with 2 cases of beer for me.
why not just let people claim it in their taxes, that way people who actually DO pay taxes (and where the money from the program came from) get a shot at their own money back, instead of once again feeding the stray dogs in the hood.
it's probably better that way, the bikes are probably the highest quality chineesium, and it'll catch fire burning the trailer down in the middle of the night during the charge cycle. They saved themselves a lawsuit.

An article in my newspaper this morning published by The San Diego Union-Tribune says that the CA E-bike voucher giveaway finally worked last Thursday evening without the system crashing. "The state program was able to collect and process over 100,000 applications". "People who tried to apply were assigned random numbers, then the program posted a notice at 6:27 p.m. that they had chosen 1,000 applicants, just 27 minutes after the window closed." The California E-bike Incentive Program was approved four years ago. Lawmakers set aside $31 million to promote the alternatives to smog-spewing cars, but the application process was pushed back repeatedly."
"Pedal Ahead collected more than $2 million to manage the program after running a similar effort for the San Diego Association of Governments. But the regional planning group took back operation of the local program amid an investigation into its reporting practices. The San Diego Union-Tribune later reported the nonprofit was the subject of multiple investigations. State Officials said they expect to select a new program manager later this year and distribute the remaining funds earmarked for the program in one major online push in the coming months."

when all is said and done it will be interesting to see how much of that money made it's way to actual bikes and how much was grifted in 'fees' and 'overhead'.

Last night on the local radio news it was announced that the California Air Resources Board is closing out their new E-bike purchase grant program, which gave up to $2K to disadvantaged people to purchase a new E-bike and are transferring the remaining $18 million into their auto EV reimbursement program. They said it was due to problems with their E-bike grant website, but my guess is that lately E-bikes have been getting a bad rap in the news, with doctors and politicians claiming that people, and especially teenagers, are being injured riding them. So getting people on E-bikes has become less of a social plus and has now become a social minus. So I guess that ends that E-bike subsidy program, which follows in the footsteps of Federal and State subsidies for electric motorcycles. >:(

Teenagers are going to hurt themselves on any kind of bike.
i got a speeding ticket at age 14 on a 10 speed doing 38 mph in a 20. yah i know.
so this, the e bikes are just too fast, is just another crock of shit too. although some of them i hear can hit 40 to 50, but still at 30, you crash on a bike, pedal, electric or whatever, you are in trouble.
the federal slush fund got shut down, they needed an excuse for why they won't pay out of THEIR pockets, so there you go.
with CA having so much solar power, you'd think they would want people on e bikes to get around, the alternative is the car, and fumes. yes i know coal makes fumes too but solar is clean and pure right? ::)
