OTW to work, exit highway, sitting on the ramp to turn left. A space opens up in the adjacent lane that will get me closer to the light and hopefully make it through without having to wait for another light change. I move the throttle to go, but the bike doesn't move. No response.
ERROR BATTERY MODULE INELIGIBLE banner pops up on the display. I hit the kill switch, key off, key on, and it's back to normal, working fine. Battery was at normal temp with 44SOC left. Never seen this before in 4 years and 60k miles. The rest of the commute was uneventful. At work I checked and error 31 was set. I cleared it.
Any opinions? I'd rather not go to a dealer if I can avoid it. If its some rare glitch... sucks but ok I guess.

Wet conditions? I had exactly the same two weeks ago. My SR/S was outside in a short shower in the morning, got the message on my way back in the evening in dry conditions. Turning off and on, erased the error and hasn't showed up since.
-
Any opinions?
Yes, a couple of them.
1. Forget it happened, you probably will never see it happen again.
2. Don't buy an Experia if bugs like that bother you. I cannot count all the times it died on me for no apparent reason, but usually when I try to activate the cruise control or put the bike in reverse. It then often gets an "undefined fault". Scary at times when it has happened when I was not touching anything, such as right after (30 seconds of riding) a DC fast charge.
No such bugs in my 2020 SS9-. Also, my 2023 Zero DSR/x is bug free--so far with many thousands of miles on them.
But even in my ICE bikes, such as my 2013 TTSE, it has died on the freeway for no apparent reason and set an OBD2 code that I have not seen since.
This stuff has been happening ever since they started putting in the computers in our bikes. Expect the occasional bug for no apparent reason.

How many other people are plagued with this problem on their Experia? Fortunately not hearing of too many. Did you tinker with something and are not telling?
After charging I always turn all my bikes off and then back on, that way it does a reset and a fresh / hard reboot / restart on them. Ive found that charging doesn't always end properly, some chargers in specific like to give issues, not sure if it' s the final handshake and handoff or what but it's just easier to take 20 seconds to cycle power and Ive never had any oddities like that. I'll let folks know if I do.

No, it was dry and cool the first time. I had just finished a high speed 15 minute highway segment and stopped at the exit.
Last night it happened again. Same situation in reverse, I had run that highway segment otw home. Stopped at the end, wouldnt go when the light turned green. This time the battery was showing red, the last time the battery was showing yellow I think. I suspect that there is a brief thermal issue that causes it to reject using the pack because some part of it is too hot. In the last month my battery capacity started dropping and now, using a wattmeter, I can see that from 2%SOC to full 100% draws only 8.6kwh, and thats including whats used by the chargers. I think the battery is on the way out.

"Draws only 8.6KWH" doesn't make any sense.
What was your charge rate (in KW or volts and amps, but not "KWH") and how many hours did it take to go from 2 to 100% SOC?
-Don- Auburn, CA
-
It makes perfect sense. kWh is a measure of energy and a wattmeter can calculate that based on the power draw over a certain amount of time. It only tells you the energy input and the actual energy in the battery will be less because they're not 100% efficient, but still 8.6kWh is far below what he should be expecting.
-
It makes perfect sense. kWh is a measure of energy
KWH the measurement of energy used or gained in one hour or is the power capacity of battery, which is also measured in KWHs. "Draws 8.6KWH" makes no sense. But if the battery drained down 8.6 KWH, or gained 8.6 KWH that would make sense. if that is what was meant.
If it made sense to you, please explain it in different words. Such as it had an 8.6 KW(not KWH) load, etc.

What I meant was, the wattmeter recorded 8.6kwh energy used as the bike charged from 2 percent SOC until it thought it was fully charged , showed 100% and stopped charging. When I look at the watt meter after that event, that's what it showed. That includes power consumed by the chargers in doing their job, as well as the power that actually went into the battery.
Today I rode just as fast as I usually, do, and no problems. I'll just keep going and see what happens, this ought to be good for a laugh.
Also to answer your question it charged at the rate you get from 120v... I think it shows 1300w or 1200w on the screen when thats occurring. I don't know how long that took, I was asleep for most of it. I have a lamp timer that turns on at around the right time so that when its done charging, its time for me to leave for work.

OIC.
What were you using for a wattmeter?
Anyway, a defective battery can charge to full much faster because it will not hold as many KWHs. I had that problem with my Zero DS when it was around two years old. I first noticed it seemed to charge a lot better from the regen. Later, I noticed "magic charging" and it charging to full three times faster than usual. And the range was about a third of what it should have been. It acted just as if my 6.5 KWH battery turned into a 2 KWH battery. Anyway, I got a new battery in warranty, Zero no longer had any 6.5 KWH batteries so they gave me the 7.2 KWH so now it has more a little more range than when it was new.

The chargers especially if you are only charging at 115 volt can eat up to 10 percent of the total energy or more going into the bike, switching power supplies are not very efficient in that manner. Even though it is showing KW, is it showing you KW burned from the wall, or is it measuring it as it goes into the battery?
You said that you use a lamp timer so it turns off, or I should say, is done charging right about the time you are ready for work?. Why don't you leave it set for an extra hour or so? Is there an issue that you don't want the battery to fine balance at the end or soak a bit, even though Lith tech really doesn't need to soak in like Lead Acid does, it will probably still balance out at the end of the bulk charge. Just thinking, this may help balance the pack a little better and possibly reduce the chance of you waking up one morning and finding the bike not ready because of a power fart in the middle of the night.
Hopefully it fixes itself but keep a close eye to see it's not slow sliding into doom on you.
Good Luck !

I'm pretty sure he's using something like a kill-a-watt, so it will be measuring energy consumed by the chargers from the mains and will include the energy wasted by the chargers. He also said he uses the timer to start the charging, not end it, and it's finished by the time he leaves for work in the morning. My guess would be that electricity is a little cheaper overnight.

I made a box to select between 120 and 240 volts supplied to the Webasto charger supplied with the bike.
There is a contactor inside.
It has two sources of power, obviously.
The 120 is sent or not sent by the lamp timer. This is for contactor control, and for supplying the 120 to the charger if that is selected.
I use the timer, together with the SOC target setting on the bike, to initiate charges automatically that are ended by the bike when the target is reached. Or... I did. Now I don't use the target, it just charges to 100% and turns off. I just have the timer set to initiate a charge so the bike should reach 100 and stop charging, say, around an hour before I leave.
So, to be clear, the bike has plenty of time to reach what it thinks is a full charge.
Sometimes I switch to the 240 if I need a quicker charge. Here instead of supplying the 120, the timer supplies a control voltage to the contactor for the 240 instead, and the bike gets that.
At the other end of the trip, at work, I use one of those Chargepoint stations in the parking lot. What happens there is I plug in, go in to to work, and use the bike's charge delay feature. It sits until nightfall in the 30-40SOC range, and at 9:30 PM charges and finishes shortly before I arrive in the lot to get it and go home.
Following this post are pictures of the timer and the power monitoring thing, cheap but really good, from Amazon.
-
timer and display from Amazon
I reset the display with the little blue button so I can see kwh accumulation for each charge staring from 0
-
Selector
The light switch looking thing disables a charge if I want to, blocking both the 120 to the bike and the control signal to the 240 contactor
This has the form it does partially because this is the stuff I found rummaging around in the junk piles at work. Sort of a synthesis of the features I wanted and what was available for free to build it.

Here's the second event. Now I'm wondering if the DC to DC is suspect. Just now looked at this. If the BMS isn't getting the power it needs, perhaps the MBB isn't getting the permission it needs to use the battery pack.
Recently in another thread I added a separate 12v battery to run my accessories because it could no longer manage to power them reliably.
Now I'm thinking maybe the Sevcon converter should be swapped. This event happened right near the end of my highway run, then at the stoplight the ineligible fault occurred and I had to push it out of the road onto the sidewalk

Does the BMS get power from the DC-DC? I would have assumed it's powered straight from the battery, either tapping into however many cells it needs for the appropriate voltage (so probably 3 for 12V) or has a way of stepping down the voltage of the full pack.

I dont know. It would be an interesting thing to try to key up the bike then remove the 12v battery cable. Does it turn off, or error?
Doesnt directly answer your question, just something I wonder about.
All I know of BMS conns is what I can see in the prints derived by AtomicDog shared via Github
Im not a Zero scientist but if I was building it, for safety I would not want to rely on the thing monitoring the power pack to get its power from the power pack its monitoring. Id rather it have an independent source of power, like the PDU, and if the PDU is lost the system shuts down, and if whatever serves as a BMS watchdog signal to the MBB is lost, the contactor opens.

My BMS logs obtained through ZNG will never parse using the HTML tool. IDK why. Only the MBB ones work.
I made one of those cables to use Terraterm with the OBD2 port.
Ill try that tonight with the laptop I have here.. look at what can be reported about the BMS. Gotta drop this for now, other stuff to do today.
EDIT: You may well be right about the power for BMS, I just realized the extra battery I added to my Zero to power my accessories works exactly like that. Has its own little BMS built right in, which contributes to self discharge.

Didnt get to the laptop yet but last night I keyed on the bike, then disconnected the 12v battery ground terminal. Immediately the battery light came on on the display. The bike stayed powered up.
I put up the kickstand and tried gently turning the throttle but it was not armed. A banner appeared saying 12v battery low, or 12v low, or some such.
Put the stand down, cleared that error, and when I went to put the stand up again I got another error banner, "traction control fault". I put the stand down, and cleared that.
( 12v low is Fault Code 25, traction control fault is Fault Code 13 )
I put the stand up up again, move the throttle a bit and its armed!!!
So IDK what if anything that has to do with finding my problem... but by experimentation now we know its possible to ride on with a failed battery, and even to be able to " jump start" the SRS/SRF with a dead or missing 12v battery and ride it around. This could be a Plan B for someone dealing with a low 12v battery in the cold or something. You just need some tools to disconnect the negative terminal and another sufficient source of 12v to get it going. Maybe you could even connect a Lipo charger and leave the battery connected, and THAT would be enough to get it going.

That 12 volts controls the BMS and stuff too correct?
be VERY careful, you are playing with fire if you do indeed have a voltage problem.

I don't know. It doesn't come from the 12v battery.

Just to close this out, Don seems to be right.
After those two "ineligible" events, never saw it again.
Also turns out my battery still has more capacity than I thought... I forgot about the effects of cold weather.
Thanks for all the input
