Title: BMW issues a Stop Sales Notice for NA
Post by: Richard230 on September 21, 2023, 08:21:25 PM
BMW has advised their dealers not to sell any more new or used (?) motorcycles until further notice. Interestingly, the CE04 electric scooter is not involved, so that should tell you something:  https://www.webbikeworld.com/bmw-issues-stop-sales-notice-on-all-new-and-used-motorcycles-in-north-america/

Emissions control related apparently.

The guess floating around BMW forums is that might have something to do with the charcoal canister used on NA bikes.

Let's  kill off all sales of ICE machines, and make them buy E bikes instead.  That's one way of going 'green'.

Will be interesting to see what the story is when it finally does break in it's true form.

Yeah, I just got an email from Randy at A&S cycles in Roseville (where I ordered my Experia from) explaining that. I was wondering what it was all about and why only BMW.

I see you're familiar with UK law. We have a deadline after which all new ICE sales are banned, the clock is ticking and the industry is desperately trying to do anything to not go electric when they know full well they have no choice and should be preparing the public for what's coming.

I received the same email message.

What IS it with German vehicle manufacturers and emissions controls???

They're all bent as nine bob notes basically. Unfortunately it was this sort of thing that got us self-ejected out of Europe.

So is this going to become another kerfluffle like the volkswager was it? and emissions scandal?
Stand by for some deals on BMW's soon as they try to suck up / buy their way out of the impending fines etc etc etc.

Again, I can see it already,  your ICE vehicles just can NOT comply!  just cease making them and go clean electric to fit the OWO narrative.  Never mind that there is no electric for anyone because we blew up the gas pipeline just pretend it works!!

I can see the next step, those who do have these, you can either trade them in for a 'compliant' vehicle, which will be much more expensive.  Have them repaired, which will be expensive, or get fined / jailed.... which will be expensive.

I think it's a bit more benign this time - it's not a defeat mechanism, but apparently just the emissions control canister thing has been found to have a manufacturing defect or somesuch that renders it sub-par. Or something. You would normally, however, expect a recall ... not a "stop selling everything" order. That's the strange part.

Well they have to get the offending parts replaced on the bikes that are already at dealers, I imagine if they continued to sell them knowing that they weren't emissions compliant that's when the big fines come rolling in.

"Recalls" are for safety related. TSB's (Technical Services Bulletins) are used to fix things that are not safety related.

Perhaps their new vehicles are not meeting the USA standards, so perhaps it's best to stop the sales before they even get here.

But privately-owned bikes too?  That could end up being a real mess if all BMW motorcycles past a certain year get recalled to have their emission equipment replaced, even if it is only a canister.

I still recall when all of the 2001 Yamaha FZ1 models were recalled by Yamaha for not meeting California emission requirements after they had been sold to their customers . I have no idea how that recall went, but my guess is that few if any bikes were actually confiscated by Yamaha to comply with CA's demands that they be snatched away from their owners.   ::)

Calmoto just sent me an email for the BMW stop sales notice with a offer that their Energicas are still available for test riding and sales.

I did not see where Energica was mentioned. It did mention you can test ride and leave a deposit on an ICE  BMW and can still buy now the BMW CE04 electric right away.

Mine must be different, it has no blue print. The only place mine shows Eneriga mentioned is in black print where it says:

"
"If you were considering a new vehicle, we also have a vast selection of KTM, Energica, and Vespa ?motorcycles available."

I just now received this email:

On September 29th, CalMoto was informed by BMW North America states that the stop-sale order has been   LIFTED!

This was NOT a safety related matter. There is NO  technical action (recall) required at this time related to this stop sale on any of our products.  We are excited to be able to retail BMW's to all our new and current customers. Come to CalMoto to testride any model on showroom floor and see what is being delivered next for you to enjoy.   Thank you for understanding and working with us during this time. We look forward to seeing you soon!

Translation, we bribed the right sob and magically the problem went away.
That looks even worse that they won't tell you why.
A stop sales nation wide, is a pretty serious thing, which one would deduce, would take something serious to cause it.
The fact that they now are trying to pretend nothing happened, is even more suspicious.

Could the stop sales notice have been a way to get attention for BMW motorcycles and also a way to get some customers to buy the bikes right after sales started up again just in case it wouldn't happen again? It might be a new type of marketing idea that a consultant decided was worth a try.  ::)  You just never know about these sort of things.  ;)

It would be real sleazy that's for sure, but we are talking BMW so, anything is possible.
Still, I wouldn't rush out to buy one, or any brand that pulled a stunt like that.   I'd still be asking what's up? What happens when they undo their reversal because the bribery check bounces or something?

If they are going to approach you with shady shit, how do you think they are going to treat you once they got you, or worse, when you need service?   No thanks.

It remines me of when Coke~Cola was taken off the market, replaced by the new Coke. All that free advertising, etc.
