I think 3G was shut off in the U.S. a year or two ago. It didn't seem to affect my Zero S.

Between my 2017 Zero bikes and my cell phone, it is via Bluetooth. Only between the cell and the internet is 3 to 5G. It makes no difference to my bikes.
Do some of the Zeros work differently?

Don't you need an app on your phone to do your bike stuff? Or does the bike talk directly to the internet?
If you need the phone then it should not affect you, you can whatever internet to the phone and phone / wifi / bluetooth / whatever to the bike if need be Id think.

He's talking about the gen 3 bikes (SR/S, SR/F, new SR, DSR/X, and now the 2024 S and DS), they have a cellular connection so you can monitor stuff when out of Bluetooth range. I think this will also affect many third party GPS trackers, I doubt many of those are 4G.

OIC, but it even includes the DSR/X which is a newer model? I would think that would be at least 4G.
BTW, why type of stuff does it monitor?
I do recall seeing a "automatic updates" on my DSR/x which can be switched off or on. There has been no 3G in this area for more than a year.
BTW, two years ago, when I was in the Everglades of Florida, my Verizon Wireless cell phone would not work but my Verizon Wireless hotspot worked perfectly. I discovered my cell was still on 3G and my Hotspot was 4G, then I realized there was no 3G in that area. Also, many alarm systems use cell and needed to be updated before the 3G went away.
I would think at least the newer Zeros would have at least 4G by now. That 3G was going away in the USA has been known for years.

There are other ways to do such. For a couple of examples with a Spot Messenger or inReach tracking (https://www.garmin.com/en-US/c/outdoor-recreation/satellite-communicators/#satellite-messaging-devices). Has a monthly fee, can also be used for other stuff.

companies make small devices you can fit on your bike / car etc etc and for a small monthly fee they do the same.
If it ever rides off on it's own, you can use them to pinpoint it and have the po po help teach your bike to behave better!

Actually... a lot of those devices you mention will become obsolete as well.

It was bound to happen, I give it probably 3 years and they will be nuking 4g as well, because we got this 5g and now some of the cable companies are claiming to have 10g, wtf ever that is, but yah there'd be an even better standard as they pick up their spying on us efforts and the data they need to shuffle goes up exponentially.

That 10G claim is a marketing gimmick by Verizon. It has nothing to do with reality.

That was kind of my point, but the reality is, I am betting they are working on 6g right now. It'll run in the microwave of radars range. Need higher freqs to send more bandwidth, more wiggles per wobble to squeeze data into. Especially if they start going with autonomous cars / flying drones etc, they are going to need a shit ton of data to direct them, guide them etc. I can see live streaming the necessary maps to them and live reports of 'obstacles' to help them identify and avoid them, not to mention spying and sending back a 360 panoramic view of ever person / car / business front they pass to be analyzed for compliance.

There are still uses for the lower frequency systems - the high frequency stuff is thwarted by inclement weather. I hope they don't just ditch it all and assume we all live in eternal sunshine.

Yah the high freq is an issue, hell GPS can be blocked by tree leaves of the forest. But if they have it on every light pole, because every street light has a 1080P or better camera on it, and a hardwire or 5G shot to a hardwired antenna every half block or so, then it's not an issue.
I still can't figure out why they are selling tooth brushes that are blue tooth connected. To WHAT? What next, preparation H with a brown spot connection? Insertion depth too deep, paste pressure too high, watch out for a brown out!!
Why does my fridge, washing machine and stove need to be internet connected? That's one thing I don't like about the 'connected' vehicles, why do YOU need access to my vehicle with the ability to brick it?

It becomes an issue when a thief stops your tracker from transmitting when the bike goes into the back of a van, they park it down an alleyway between some houses, stick it in a garage, or maybe even a nice thick cover out in the countryside would be enough. Shit it would have a hard enough time just transmitting through the plastic and metal on the bike.

It's been that way for decades though. GPS tech has not really changed too much over the years.
People cry about the gps thingie in their phone, wailing the govt is using it to track them. Here's a news flash,with all the cell towers, they can track you much more accurately via your cell signal than the GPS puck you have in your phone.
still, a good military grade GPS unit can pin you down to a foot or so, actually less. This is awesome when in a boat. Navigating the back creeks in the middle of the night, or trying to find that spot you marked. Adjust the fix offset and you are good to go.
They probably will let toys talk on the lower freq's to wireless routers / modems, which would be operating at more 'wifi' ranges anyways, to grab all the short distance in range stuff, then uplinking the data to the higher freq for transmission. I can see them also using a hopping tech so it can just pip pip and relay from unit to unit too. Spread spectrum also comes into mind.
I have an old analog radio shack brick cell phone from the 1980's and it still turns on. I should fire it up and try to talk just to see what happens and hope the NSA, Navy Seals and Swat team don't show up thinking I got hunter bidens laptop :D
