I've a 22 Ribelle RS for like 1.5y and just discovered something about balancing :o so just in case i'm not the only one being stupid i prefer to share the infos
When your bike is charged and it start balancing, the balancing process will stop automatically after 1h even if it isn't fully done.
So basically if you leave your bike plugged and come back the day after and it shows 99% it doesn't mean that you lost 1% overnight, it just means that the balancing wasn't fully done.

Just have to make sure: You are on the last available firmware update?
Because I had the issue of not charging to 100 % when I was on FW version 042, but the first version.
It seems OK since the 042 was updated.

I have had my 2023 Ribelle RS for a year now and have never seen it do that. It has always charged to 100%. Balancing starts at 99% though. I am on the first version of Fw 042.

FYI, according to the Swiss importer of Energicas, and Energica itself, there is only one version of firmware 042 and that runs fine. There was, however, a problem with the software that installed firmware 042. The issues encountered by early firmware 042 adopters are considered to be caused by a bug in said software, not the firmware. I can't verify that myself but the explanation sounds plausible to me as the meta-data of the firmware seems to be identical.

I'm on the last Firmware but in this case it's irrelevant. Long story short, i had a defective connector inside the battery (don't worry it's quite rare) so balancing was impossible for a few months. It was a hardware problem, not a software one so it's not related to FW version
If you balanced your battery on a regular basis, 1h is enough so you don't see any problem. However, if you didn't (or can't) balance it correctly for an extended period and the bike will still shut off automaticaly after 1h (even if you need more).
Basically you just need to unplug, plug back in and it ll resume the balancing for another 1h.
The info couldn't be more accurate as it comes from the 3 techs from Energica factory that flew to Paris last week to inspect and repair my bike.

Yep changing the defective connector inside de battery was a pain in the .... as my dealer said. They had to remove the battery, dissasemble it partially..
They were supposed to be "only" 2 at the beginning but they took the opportunity to do a bit of training to the mecanics at the dealer also.

I have a 2023 Ribelle and have seen it start balancing as low as 90 percent before. I want to say I've seen it start in the upper 80's but want to verify that first.
I have not paid attention to the balancing but have seen it turn off at 99 percent only twice really.
Once was after a few CCS charges and hopping right back on, and riding the bike hard, so yah there could have been an unbalance. The other was an overnight charge that was a fast charge followed by an AC charge to finish the last say 20 percent of it, I woke up the next morning turned the bike on and it said 99 so can't say for sure how it got there.
I can't see that I seen the hour turn off. I have charged my bike at 115 ish volts before, (that is the voltage when I plug it directly into my one solar panel array) and it's been at balancing for more than an hour at times.
I'll keep an eye on it better and see what I observe.

My 2023 Ribelle RS never gets to 100% only 99%, I also never see the charging complete screen, It just shuts off and goes dark. Turn key on and it shows 99% SOC.

Following the discussion with the techs, there is no "charging complete" or "balancing complete" screen which is in my opinion really dumb.
The only way to make sure that the battery is really fully balanced is that the bike is indicating 100%. For your info, mine was badly unbalanced due to the separate issue that i had and they told me that acheiving a full balancing will take around a week (unplugging, plugging and starting over)
I already see an increase in balance so it is working (slowly).
But to be honest now that i know how it works i think i ll cancel the SOC limit for the future ;)

When there's still some charging going on (the top number on the dash) the bike will not cut off after 1h.
The bike will cut only after 1h at 0.0 which happens when the bike doesn't charge anymore but is still balancing the cells.

I guess I'll keep unplugging and plugging back in till it finally goes to a 100%. According to the manual, there is a charge complete screen, not sure how long it stays on. It could be that 2023 and newer models there is no complete screen.

My Ribelle gets a charge complete screen when it's finally done.
Having the batteries unbalanced 1 percent is not a game killer, yes it's nice to have them perfectly balanced but that little bit is not going to really destroy anything, especially if you are working your way towards a final good balance.
Balancing is good for the batteries but is not something that MUST be done every charge cycle.

Good point, another thing I noticed., everytime I unplug & Plug attempting to reach 100%, my range goes down about 4 miles each time.

Ride the bike a mile or so and the range will readjust itself again. Ive learned not to pay attention it. I look at, ok how many miles do I have to get home? How many of those miles do I have the potential to go fast? Fast- 1 percent every 0.5 to 0.75 miles, normal 1 mile to a percent, slow 2 miles - 1 percent.
People tend to not understand the word 'Estimated' in the 'Range' and always gripe that it's never accurate. Well it IS accurate, your DRIVING is not consistent so it's YOUR fault it's off :D

I used to have like 97% so i thought 3% isn't a big deal but it's a bit more complex because 1% is not equal to 1 cell. For exemple, a Tesla 85 Kw Battery have 7104 cells, so our 21.5 Energica should have around 1700 cells so 3% is around 50 cells that need balancing.
In one hour, those cells will not be able to be balanced (they told me that it could take a few days pluging/unplugging to balance my battery back from 97% to 100%). So if i don't force myself to do it correctly once, the balancing will slowly get worse. The more i wait, the more cells will need balance and the more time it ll take.
To be honest, i'm not a balancing addict also, i was just pointing out that i was thinking that i was balancing my battery correctly and i was wrong because i wasn't aware of this "cut off after 1h" thing.
So if you plan/wish to balance it to 100% you have to reach 100% on the dashboard otherwise the balancing isn't perfect.

I was under the impression that if you left your bike plugged in and on the charger, once hit it's 100 percent it shuts off, but turns itself back on by it's own every few hours to check on things to see how the battery is doing? If this is so, then it should start a recharge on it's own when it does that check and not have to be manually restarted.
Balancing should have a bit of a passive component to it as well, so even without juice going in, the cells should dribble between themselves to balance at whatever voltage they all finally equal out and fall down to. At this point the next turn on should just top them all off.
If you got low cells and high cells, it is going to turn off every time once the highest cell hits it's programmed max voltage, no matter what the low cells is at. So with this, giving it a bit of time to settle out between charge / balancing cycles would probably work a lot better for you than immediately turning it back on. You'll just tap the high one at peak and shut down again before any real power shifting can occur.

Energica should have around 1700 cells so 3% is around 50 cells that need balancing.
Nossir...the 21.5kw pack uses pouch cells...too bad Energica doesn't share specifics...there's about 180 cells total (2P90S) split into (4) 45-cell modules as best as my math shows and deductive reasoning is based on patent info from drawing submitted on the first generation pack.
The weakest cell hits the terminal voltage first and initiates the balance phase - the time it takes for pack to adjust 1% is long time because all cells have to discharge for the healthiest bunch to come up to max capacity, so there's a time-out.
Me thinks a short discharge cycle is required to get pack back up to 100% say ride it to 95% and make sure you see 4amps displayed when it gets back on charger to effectively rebalance...again, if 0-amps is the last phase it's been before the charger shuts down and that phase lasts for an hour then how can one ever expect 100% charge on their bike.
Charge cycle on mine stops at 98% and dated firmware makes no adjustments to what is being displayed.

May I add that the temperatures can also play a role. When I charge immediately coming home (battery and ambiance warm) and look at the charged bike in the (cool) morning, there are often 2-3% missing from the level it should have charged to.
Recently I had 82% displayed after overnight charging to 80%. This morning I got 78% instead of 80%. In winter I once had 95% instead of 100%.
When I have a long tour planned the next day, I start charging in the evening aiming for 100% and set the Amps low enough that the charge is just complete when I wake up in the morning (allowing for 1.5h balancing). In my view that should somewhat compensate for an overnight temperature change.
Just my 50 cents...

I shared more or less all your opinions before discussing until the techs from Energica explained to me how their bike behave and shown me a deep analysis of my battery life stating that my last full balance was in july 2022. Then they told me that i need to plug/unplug/resume again and again and that my battery will only be fully balanced when 100% will show. It's not dealer "bullshits" those guys are working at the factory so i assume they know their bike better than anyone.
To be honest, i think it's a bad design decision to made the bike start balancing so "late" in the charging process when you implement a cut off after 1h without juice.
All in all it's not a big deal, but i just wanted to point out that sometimes we may think we balanced the bike properly but it's not always true

jotjotde, I also plug in as soon as I get home from work (30 miles) and have never had it not be at 100% in the morning. Even when the battery temp was showing yellow when I got home. I think everyone's Energica is unique when it comes to software glitches and bugs. At least it seems like that.

So, After 6 tries of unplug/plug still only managed 99%, rode bike down to 80%, Specter was right bike showed 82 mile range at 99% after 6th charge but then after 3 miles of riding it went to 120. anyway after 40 mile ride back down to 80%, back on the charger and finally got, " CHARGE COMPLETE 100% "
Energica garage video says to balance every 30 days, manual says every 15 days, I'm going to rebalance to 100% every week, 7 days.

Honestly, the balancing should depend on how you ride, how much. I tend to balance every 4th or 5th recharge, unless I know im going to need the miles the next day, then ill let it top off, but otherwise, i throw 4 to 8 kw into the bike and tickle the batteries up every day with my solar when there is room for it.
When my bike is balancing the current WILL come down from 14 Amp down to ive seen it as low as 2 or 3 amps balancing.
there are balancing circuits that can sit on a bank all the time, and they are passive. Every time a battery starts getting lower, they start at like 5 mVolt difference between cells and start trickling power from the higher cells to the lower ones. Charging, sitting, it don't matter, they work constantly, they are 'live' in the circuit. Once the batteries are balanced, their idle current suck is like 10 mA or something tiny like that so really are an insignificant load on the battery overall. Not sure why these are not used in there, so the balancing is really kind of a thing that happens and no brainer.

Huh, mine has been stopping at 98 or 99 for some time now, I should maybe try plugging it back in after a full charge next time.
It's not like I've gone 3000 miles without an AC charge or brought it down to -5% at any point or anything >.>

Try swapping them once to see how it works for you. IF you have 115 available, I hear that overseas they don't do the goofy split phase shit us yanks do ! :)
Otherwise a 240 charge should work. Instead of 80 percent,try starting at 85 or 90 percent, that way it throws a little juice into them and goes immediately into balance mode, and gives you a bit more of that 'hour' claimed.... balancing.
Honestly though my bike starts balancing whenever . today it started at 86 percent, and keeps the charge current at full bore until it gets up into the high 90's then trickles it down, then it hits 100 percent, the bike pauses, the 100 percent charge screen comes on and the charger shuts off.
Not sure what causes the batteries to unbalance as much as they can, though TBH I was running stupid on the interstate today. WOT for about 4 miles straight, so im sure that had an affect on the balance as the batteries went to yellow and I was pulling some KW. I was also sitting straight up on the bike like a dogs dick sticking out so im sure that pulled an extra 10 kw of energy :D
I should try that, throw it on the charger right after a run like that and see when it starts balancing, and letting it set overnight and the batteries settle down and see how it reacts.
Given it's passive cooling I would be willing to put money on it and say the calls in the center of the battery pack are toasty, because they have to dissipate the heat thru the rest of them essentially, while the cells on the edges / outside are cooler because they have the case and airflow on it as a heat sink. Even if there are partitions in the pack to sink the batteries, it still has to carry that heat out of there, and unfortunately, one of the properties I have discovered working with Alumninum is, it's GREAT for picking up heat, shitty for getting rid of it for some reason. Brass / Copper are 10 X better,but expensive so I don't see them using that.
Given this, general chemistry, the hotter cells will have a higher voltage. That's the way it is. I would love to know the C rate a wot is pulling on them and the w/hr rating of each cell and it's C-rating each cell as per manu specs.

I've noticed the same on my Experia. Charge when cool (overnight) , you get a couple more percent, and vice versa. I do the same thing you do when I need range, start the charge late at night so it finishes right before dawn. After doing this, I've sometimes gone as far as 10 miles at urban speeds before it comes off 100%. The battery has some significant headspace in it; I think charging when cool lets the bike just slightly get into that unused capacity.

We only have 240 here, it'll go up to 99 and then sit there drawing "0" kW for a good while, it's sitting on 20ish atm and I plan on charging it up after the shop run tomorrow so I can try for a 400 mile ride on Saturday, if I plug it back in in the morning while I have breakfast I can see if it is actually prematurely stopping.
I've not noticed any range loss (actually, I've not noticed any range loss *at all* which gives me the impression their 80% at 1000 cycles figure is very pessimistic).

Honestly you should be there already. I can not imagine a battery that far out of whack, unless there is a cell / cluster issue.
Have you reached out to the dealer yet? I would just to see what they say, if they address it or give you the standard, relax tootsie, it's perfectly normal routine.
Are you driving it between cycles and if so how much?
No something seems odd there. Maybe do a total system reset in case a base number got wonked somewhere or something. ::shrug::

My battery was really unbalanced and reached 100% just this morning after like 15 cycles of plugging/unplugging. So it's tedious but at the end it is working as they said
I drove small distances and without putting too much pressure on the throttle

Did you get the bike this way, or did something happen while you had it to make it this way?
I can't see why a dealer would NOT prep the bike so it's at 100 percent, and everything is 'perfect' when he takes your money and hands it over to you. I can see maybe 4 or 5 churns on a brand new battery, though if they were prudent when the put the thing together it'd have been balanced THEN, but 15? jeez.
Well, at least you finally got it there and lets hope you don't have any further issues with it and it lasts a good long time.

My bike had a connector issue inside the battery that prevented a full 100% charge. It took us like 1 year to find this issue so basically the bike wasn't balanced for at least a year.
To give some credit to my dealer, this issue is very rare and couldn't be found easily. There's no special error code and the main symptom was that the bike shut off. It only happened 2 times in one year. First time, we thought it was a firmware issue and i thought it was resolved. When i was "balancing" my battery i wasn't to worried to see 98% the next morning and thought i had lost 2% overnight so i thought i was doing the right thing
The second time the bike shut off, i couldn't even charge DC so that why we did some freeze frame and send them to the factory. Then Energica Italy took control of the bike and runs a bunch of test, we made some also and they found that my issue was hardware related and that i was a very rare connecting issue inside the battery. That explain why they flew 3 techs from italy to fix it instead of changing the battery pack. I can't blame my dealer, he's great and this issue is so specific that he couldn't find it "alone"
About the dealers and balancing, most of them aren't aware that the bike shut down after 1h even if it's unbalanced. As us, they thought they were doing the right thing just by putting it on charge without limit every now and then.
For exemple, when the guys from energica explained this to my dealer, he put the demo Ribelle to the test and had to do 4 cycles do reach 100% ;D
Again, for me the fact that the bike shut off after 1h even if balancing isn't done is a bad design choice and the fact that even the dealers aren't aware of it isn't really clever.
However, despite this, i'm still amazed by the level of customer service from my dealer and Energica. They put a lot of effort to find the issue, once they found out what it was, they flew the week after from italy to fix it so ok there's sometimes some issues or mistake but they care of them.

Good report on your experiences...so the 100% displayed equates to balance not capacity...most excellent discovery.
Do you suppose a bike that sits more than is ridden is more suseptable to requiring iterative balance sessions to keep pack at 100%?
Me now thinks yes.
The time-out when balancing is a safeguard that factors thermal build-up to load when cells are discharged, gonna monitor for this and perhaps pause 45-minutes between balance restarts to allow for heat dissipation.
Do you suppose the drain to select cells that support keep-alive voltage sourced from 315mA fuse represents the disparity at end of charge?
Me thinks yes and revising opinion about healthiest cells, they are the second from last to fully charge.

Charged per usual, she terminates at 98%.
Initiate first balance restart, still 98% at end of cycle.
Was stunned to see 100% after 2nd balance restart.
Wow, after a brief 3-min 4-amp surge at each cycle restart it switches to 0-amps and runs that way util it times out.
Not sure why so little charge made such a big difference unless pack is balanced but not at full capacity.

I took a step backwards , After a long ride yesterday I plugged charger in, went to 100% but no charge complete screen, Instead I got 'UNDEFINED FAULT CONTACT SERVICE" and then dark screen. Now what?

Turn the bike off, and then turn it back on. It should be fine.
I had this fault happen once or twice after a charge that went on for a long time.
Press and HOLD the power button for 10 seconds or so, it should hopefully make the main screen turn on for you and let it cycle thru whatever it is doing and you should be good to go with no other errors.
Let us know how that goes.

Mine hit 100% overnight on Friday so that was nice, maybe it finally sorted itself out since I've been using it heavily (and thus overnight charging more) this month.

Rode mine again down to 80%, after charging it went to 100% but still don't get charging complete screen, instead I get a undefined fault for about 2 seconds then shuts off. Seems normal, good range and SOC.

Thanks for your report. My SS9+RS had that "rare" condition too. It shut down two times while driving without any warning. Gave me the absolute creeps. It turned out that some early + batteries (21.5 kwh) had connectors between the battery packs installed that had wrong specs due to a faulty alloy. They would lead to a "too much voltage" error which for safety reasons triggers an instant shutdown. An Energica tech from Modena changed all the connectors which took him half a day. Since then no more issues.
BTW, my bike didn't show any problematic balancing behavior and max. voltage difference after balancing was 35mv before the connector change. Now it's slightly lower (<30mv).

About the small voltage difference it's normal. A balanced battery a 100% is indeed balanced at 99.99% there's always a small tolerance

i believe around 3 to 5 millivolts is the typical variance that will trigger a balancing needed / activate the balancing circuitry, ie forward bias the device etc etc. Most the packs you can buy online to balance batteries, this is their threshold, and TBH you really don't need anything with a tolerance tighter than that.

My 2023 rebelle will show that balancing message as it approaches 100% and when it hits 100% the charging process turns off and the cable lock is released, no charge is complete message. The screen goes dark if I had the bike keyed off during charging. When I turn on the bike, I see 100% charge. No error or fault message.

Seems like maybe some communications issue. It tried to tell the charger, ok turn off im done, and it did not, it was still pulling 1.1 kw. So, either you were NOT at 100 percent on the bikes side or the charger did not turn off when told to. The fault flipped, WHICH yes, that does end the charge cycle, and it is complete.
Id chalk it off to another bug.
I have seen on my Ribelle,especially when multi mode charging w/o cycling bike power, that sometimes it'll say 95 percent, and balancing, then all of the sudden, just pop to 100 percent, charge complete and we are done.
When the bikes power is cycled, it shows 100 percent and everything is fine.
Maybe @Desmoni can answer this.
The programming for the Bikes, is this done inhouse or do you contract an outside source to do this for you, and fix bugs etc, which is why it don't happen as often as it really should IMO ?
Inhouse = Easy fixes IF they have the talent. Push updates fairly often.
Outhouse = a lot of money, so wait until you have a long list before spending the cash, and do it all at once, and hope they are not like GE and you actually have some competence working it and it's not more buggy shit.

At least now I'm getting to 100% SOC after I ran battery down to -10%. Just wish I knew what fault was. Is that Desmo guy a real service manager?

Yeah, that one, at the end of a full charge...before display goes blank.
Normal and nothing to be concerned about in my experience.
Seat open, seat switch contact closed (during charge) was thought to be the faulty logic that causes that but it was never confirmed.

He never answered my question, I still get the fault
Me thinks this is a phantom fault that occurs when balance session times-out at same time charge current is present versus no charge current present when the cycle terminates.
The video example in this thread shows the charge current at 4-amps when session terminated, need to capture 0-amps event when session terminates to validate this is just a bug.

Same fault here....mine follows up w/ "Contact Service" if ignition is keyed "on" when charging terminates.
No functional issues otherwise or nuisence alerts while riding...ever...so not too concerned this fault indication is an issue.

Sometimes you get goofy messages at the end of the charge cycle. Im going to say it's just buggy soft ware, lets be honest about it.
Typically when you cycle power on and off, those messages are all gone, there are no lingering notifications and everything is fine.
I tend to just ignore them and go about my day.
Yes they are annoying, and for a new user, who does not know any better yet, can seem a bit frightening, oh crap, the bike is brand new and there's a problem already ?!?!?!?!??? At the end of the day, if that's the only major issue going on, is a buggy notification, they are doing pretty good, when you consider how many other's have had entire season's / years ... recalled due to bad batteries etc etc.

WHAT was the thing that made it start?
Was it an update that began all this crap, or did a log finally fill up, did a now being used battery, finally shuffle off a high value into normal ranges and dings in and out of that now? WHAT was the thing that triggered these?

Well today probably on my 50th charge cycle bike went to 100%, got a charge complete and no" undetermined fault "message. Guess I better buy a lotto ticket.
