Title: Engineering screen
Post by: chisquare on August 26, 2023, 02:58:23 PM
I don't know if Energica wants this to be common knowledge, but I consider it one of the most valuable pieces of information around their software. There is a little known and to my knowledge never discussed here in the forum access to in-depth information about the battery state. The most interesting information for me is the information about the largest voltage difference between two cells (balancing) and the battery temperature.

This information and dozens of other parameters can be found in the so-called engineering screen. This can be accessed on the Ribelle and SS9 models as follows:

Long press of the mode switch to the right (R).
Then press the following key combination:
RRR
LLL
RRR
LRL

This causes a wrench symbol to appear in the top right of the display. Pressing the mode switch calls up the service menu, in which the engineering screen is now enabled. This can be selected and shows numerous hidden information. It also has a secondary screen (press the mode switch to the right (R)). Everything seems to be read only which is certainly a good idea ;).

The engineering screen can be exited by pressing and holding the mode switch to the left (L).

I don't know if this feature is also available in the Experia's software.

Have fun, but use at your own risk.

How cool is that!

Heading to garage to give it a try...

Results are bum in my case, once in the Main Menu w/ long mode switch to (R)...then what?  Go into service screen?   OR...Cycle the mode switch again RRR then LLL OR...cycle mode switch RRR press enter OR...cycle R enter, R enter, R...  Feeling dumb not understanding how to "key In" the sequence.

It should be noted that the engineering screen was abandoned ~2 years ago. It still exists but some of the data is inaccurate. Cell voltage and temperature remain accurate, though. At least that's my understanding.

After pressing the mode switch to the right for a long time, simply press it briefly to the right and left in the sequence described. This will cause the wrench icon to appear. Only then press the mode switch straight down to get to the service screen, which now lists the engineering screen menu.

That's the exact sequence tried like a dozen times then when it doesn't work one questions it...me thinks now it's a firmware related added after version 37?

Be nice to see screen shots to grasp utility...changing firmware is not an option until Energica fixes FOB monitoring.

It kind of makes no sense to have a dealer have to go thru all that bullshit to get to a finicky screen when they have a communicator right there they can jack  right in with and get right where they need to be.

It would be nice for us to be able to see some more 'stuff' on the bike but at what end?  All that would at best, do, would be make people cry about not having access to 50 other twerks and tweaks they generally have no business being in TBH.

Some temperature readings and voltages would be nice to see, but not necessarily critical.
What would also be nice is getting rid of some of the nag stuff.  I also see some errors pop up on DC Fast Charge too, which once the key is cycled they go right away but still, there is some stuff in the software that really could use fixing.

Just my 2 watts worth.

The engineering sreeen can be displayed while riding, handy for diagnosis under load.

Thanks, I wasn't aware of that. The font size is pretty darn small, though. I wouldn't want to read that while participating in traffic.

Yah thats kind of the problem with screens like that, a ton of info but you really can't be there riding at 60 mph or more, staring intently, squinting at the screen trying to read what it says, and not paying attention to where you are driving to!

Even if you were on a road somewhere with light traffic, while you are staring at the screen, you are slowly making your way to the shoulder.  budump budump,  budump buDUMP....

Under load, so ok, you find that one bank in your battery pack is maybe under a higher resistance on a terminal point than the rest.  What can you do about that?  Will ANYone care, if it does not trigger a warranty issue?   Hey energica, my battery pack shows a potential problem here, are you going to do anything about it?  Well has it caused you a problem?  If the rate of evaporation exceeds the rate of drip then it ain't leaking!  type thing there.

With this all though, have your go pro focused on the screen, go play, do your hi torque laps and record it all real time on the camera, then come back and you can watch at leisure and try to troubleshoot your issues, otherwise trying to actually real time watch it and drive safely, hmm.
Aaron

Let me clarify one more thing.  If you are a young kid with good eyes, this might not be too hard to accomplish.  If you are an old ass bastard like me with marginal eyes, yah, this will be a problem  ;D 8)

I just tried this process with my 2023 SS9 and could not get it to work. Not sure if I was doing something wrong or this no longer a feature. Part of me thought I was being made a fool by trying to do some old school Nintendo cheat code on my electric motorcycle...🙃

Nothing happened on the Experia. But i never was good at the Konami code, lol

I can't get my bike to behave properly on the manual input of my bypass code half the times anyways on the first try, let alone cheat codes  ::)

Id not beat yourself up too hard if you can't get it to work.

Because the screen was designated as no longer supported ~2 years ago they probably never added it to the Experia. Just a hunch.

@Specter
What did you mean by your last post here (manual input of bypass codes). What does that mean?:)

Best regards!

If you do not have your key, you can key in a PIN number to unlock your bike.  Basically press and hold the start button down for 7 seconds, you'll get the key not in range error, then it should swap over to a number input screen for 4 digits.  Sometimes you have to do this a few times for it to finally pull the screen up.

use the .. umm.  turn signal?  im not at my bike,  to cycle thru the a-z 0-9 menu to get your code, then press the button it puts that number in and then moves to the next slot, when you get your pin typed in, you press the last enter, then HOLD the button in for 3 to 4 seconds and it will unblock your bike for you just like if you put your key in.

I believe the factory default for this pin code is 0000  so if you have not, you might want to go change that to something so that nobody can walk up to your bike, key in and take off.

just remember for the 4th number you have to push it in then push and hold for the bike to unlock.  just pressing and holding on the 4th number does not always work.

Aaron

Edit, your instruction manual should have a section on it for how to do this.  You might need your master key to change your pin code the first time as well.

To my knowledge, the master key is not needed for changing the pin code. But not all manuals contain the respecive chapter as the code feature was added in a firmware revision (can't remeber which). Therefore, manuals of models released before that don't feature a description. But it can be found in newer digital versions of the manuals which are accessible by your dealer or in the documents section of the Energica facebook group.

Interesting, it made me get my master key to be able to change the code.  Or perhaps I should say, you NEED to have been logged in using a key, to prove ownership??  You can't code yourself in and then change it, there must be a key involved at some point.

Just checked the Experia manual. For changing the pin, the bike must have been unlocked by the active or passive key. The master key is not needed in the process.

If you have the keyless option, it's just a matter of firmware.

I too could not get this to work on my 2023 SS9+.   Initially pressing the long right enters the menu, then the sequence just moves up and down in the first menu.   I never see a wrench icon or anything change in the menus.

If still having trouble after watching the YouTube above,  try this:

From the main screen, press mode to right to get menu and then QUICKLY (will not work if done slowly!) move mode to:

Left-Left-Left
Right-Right-Right
left-right-left

Center-press in on mode, then see the wrench, now you can slow down.  Select Service, and then select the engineering menus screens (two pages on my SS9-, move mode to right for 2nd page).

For the Experia is just a little different but seems a little easier:

from the menu select:

diagnostic

With mode switch:
left, left, left
right, right, right
left, right, left

And:

right

(Eng. screen now shows).

To get out of the engineering menu, and the status menu since were talking about that general area, you have to hold the button to the left for about 5 seconds to go back out.  He says 3 but sometimes that's a little short to actually get it to back out.
