Title: ChargePoint screwed up--not Energica
Post by: DonTom on May 22, 2023, 05:53:27 AM
I just now rode my 2020 Esse Esse 9- (smaller battery) from Reno to Auburn. NONE of three ChargePoint locations would charge up my 2020 Esse Esse 9- on I-80 in CA. I have used all three of these charge locations last year with no issues at all on the same bike. That tells me CP screwed up, not Energica. CP changed their FW to what will no longer work with ANY Energica.

I thought somebody here said this was only an issue with the larger battery-- That is not true, exactly same issue with the smaller battery as with my Experia.

The three ChargePoint locations that did NOT work with my 2020 Esse Esse 9- today:

1. Truckee, CA (but there are EA chargers a few miles away that worked well).
2. Cisco Grove, CA (this is an important location to me that I can no longer use).
3. Dash and Dine, Colfax, CA

I posted a message on Plugshare for all of these locations.

What I do NOT understand is why the Chargepoint in Grass Valley, CA does work. It says it is the same FW and model number as the others and works well on both my Energicas. But I have not tried this one since March 25, 2023.

But one nice thing I can say for CP is all these above locations also have a J-plug that does work fine with all my electric motorcycles.

Chargepoint has been made aware of the issue as Stefano himself went to their HQ to work with them on solving it. I am told they will begin rolling out new firmware in the upcoming weeks. As you may know, they start locally (Campbell) and expand until they eventually cover the rest of the US. The entire process may take a couple months. So patience for just a little bit longer.

Thanks for the info. I can get by without them working for now.  I will just look for other CCS chargers. There are plenty of them between here and Reno. And NV has a lot less CPs.  EV-Range and EV-Connect are more common. BTW, they have four new CCS stations in Carson City. (https://www.plugshare.com/location/384262) I was the first to use them when they opened on May 16.

BTW, do you have any idea why the same model and version CP in Grass Valley, CA (https://www.plugshare.com/location/182275) works fine on both my Energicas?  My check-in there is March 25, 2023 with my 2023 Experia (Plugshare says it is a 2022).

Chargepoint sucks.

Broken chargers are common.

The CP250 worked, then they didn't, then they did, and now they haven't for the last months.

I try to avoid them if I can.

Last year, I had better luck with CP than any of the others. They always worked on the first try. Today, I had to use the EA in Truckee. It took about five tries to get it to start. Timeout errors. But perhaps because I used a credit card, which adds to the communication initializing time. I hate to even turn on my cell. I had to plug in first or else it would not do anything with my credit card. I almost gave up and then it worked. I was just about ready to admit defeat and use my cell.

I have the best luck with those that have their own card, such as CP, EV-GO and EV-Connect. With the others, I use a credit card. But I do know EA works best when activated on-line.

Agree. Wish EA had its own card. I've never been able to activate it using a credit card, but the app has not been a problem for me.

Energica is very finicky to charge. The timeout is way too fast. I wonder why they haven't fixed this.

With that new flakey ChargePoints FW,  our Energicas will NEVER timeout. We are stuck on the initializing screen all day and all night.

Well, I never tried that long., so add "AFAIK" to above. But I did leave it on once for more than 30 minutes. Never timed out but also never started the charge, was still initializing.

Lately, I have had great success with credit cards at charge machines. Last year, I could never get any of them to work.

I fine the EA chargers to be very inconsistent. Some work much better than others with our bikes. But to activate online, which I hate doing, works best for EA. I normally keep my cell off, so I have to boot it up which takes a lot of time. And if there is too much sunlight, it is hard to see what I am doing.

If I ride the Experia between Auburn, CA and Reno, NV I have no need to care if the charge stations work or not.

I just rode nonstop from Auburn, CA to Reno, NV. 99.0 miles/160 KM. Even in all those hills, mostly uphill, I still have 35% SOC left when I got here. And that is with all the luggage.

I am sure happy with the range of the Experia.

DonTom,  I believe it has the same battery pack as the Ribelle / EGO, so yah, it has plenty of miles to spare.  The motor is smaller than on those two bikes so it should last longer than they do but even with that, when im riding very spirited for like 12 miles, (I still can't believe I was actually able to go that far w/o traffic, cops, or ANYthing to slow me down!!), doing 3 digits MPH, and then another  overall 20 miles of highway miles, now add in the rest of the day running around average 45 mph and i still got over 100 miles out of the pack with 12 percent left on the charge when I finally pulled into the driveway!

Running an average 75 to 80 mph on the highway I can expect about 100 miles or so on a charge.  IF I am driving somewhat normally, putting around town at speeds around say 45 to 50 mph i can see about 150 ish a charge.  These things got a great battery pack, and the range is actually decent too.  Maybe im an old pussy  but, if Im riding a bike, after 100 miles, I am more than ready to get off that thing and stretch a bit !!  Let the hands wake back up, uncramp the legs etc etc!  If you got a fast charger, by the time you take a wizz, grab something to drink, maybe a quick hot dog or snack, and stretch your legs a bit, you got enough of a charge back in the bike to do another 80 to 100 miles if you ride a bit easy.

I hear a lot of clowns complaining, oh only 150 miles range?  that sucks!  ummm,  No, Not Really....

DonTom,  I believe it has the same battery pack as the Ribelle / EGO,
Nope.  The Experia has 0.7 more useable KWH.

Experia Battery Capacity:          22.5 kWh  19.6 kWh (usable)

Other Energicas with larger battery: 21.5 kWh max, 18.9 kWh (usable)

I think of range to average 7 miles per useable KWH on any electric bike (but there are differences with weight and such)

Experia average riding range:137.2 miles (220.8 km)

Other large Energicas: 132.3 miles (213 km).

Difference in average range:4.9 miles(7.9 km).

If you don't think that is a big difference in range, try running out of juice and needing to walk with the bike that extra 4.9 miles! :)

keep a 25 foot extension cord on the bike with you, wrap it up under the seat, there are places to fit it out of the way.  14 ga is just fine, you get close, just pull into any gas station, mcdoobers, or stop and rob and plug in for an hour. Theres 10 miles for you.  While you are waiting, grab a snack or drink, or get the wifey something nice, (its the thought that counts right :P  ::)  finish your snack, get back on and continue home and hope there ain't a train..

Today, I charged up here again. (https://www.plugshare.com/location/182275) I cannot figure out why this CP CCS works with Energicas. Says same model number and same FW version as all the others that do NOT work.

Does anyody here know if . . . .

When CP updates the FW, do they have to go to each location or is it done OTA /online?

Yes. I got the same message.

I know I am "preaching to the choir" here, but I am leaving for Michigan, DC and Florida soon and it would be a lot easier to find a route with access to ChargePoint fast chargers.

I had some delays on an earlier trip to Phoenix when I first encountered this issue.

Well, at least most (all?) CP locations also have a J-1772. So if you have a few spare hours to wait, you can still use CP.

CP used to be my favorite CCS to use. They give me the least trouble. And now this.

But one very nice thing is that my Experia needs no charge stations at all between my Reno, NV home and my house here in Auburn, CA and still have around 50 miles of range left. And that is at mostly 70 MPH.

My 2020 SS9- MUST charge up on the way--either way--regardless of speed. But my favorite charge stops at the summit rest stops (Donner Summit, CA on I-80) which was a perfect halfway point, right at the very top of the hill, are BOTH down. East bound has been dead for more than a year. Half year for west bond.

I could ride to more places three years ago than I can today. More chargers today, but grouped together, the most needed ones are broken and have been broken for more than a year. And I am not counting other issues, such as no more CP and no more Harley shop charging. Those are mostly in areas that have other CCS charging within a few miles.

Such as the CCS in Fallon, NV, Hawthone, NV, Incline Village, NV.  Important locations with no other CCS--all have been down for months.

For a ride around Lake Tahoe this year, I better take my Zero SR. I can charge it at 8 KW unlike my Energica only 3 KW when I cannot find working CCS.

IMO, the Experia would have been the perfect bike if they could have squeezed a 6 KW AC charger in there.

IMO, broken CCS is a very big problem. Only one CCS station in the above three locations, all three are dead. And all have been dead for months.

Wanted to give you guys a bit of an update.

CP confirmed they are in the process of rolling out a new software version (7.5.0.22) that includes a fix to the compatibility issues with Energica.
All stations within a 25 mile radius of their Campbell California HQ should now be running the new software. They are working to roll the update out to all their stations in the next month.

YAY!

Kinda sounds like they have to send somebody out to each one, which is a big job.

BTW, can you explain why this one CCS charger always worked (https://www.plugshare.com/location/182275) with Energica and still does? When I compared the numbers to the CP CCS that did not work, they had the exact same version numbers.

I was in Grass Valley today charging my Zero DS, so I took a look at the CP CCS charger that does work with Energicas (you can see both my Energicas charging there recently on CCS).

As shown on the "About" screen:

"OEM:CPE 250

SW Version: 7.5.0.22"

So that explains that!   Grass Valley CCS must have been one of the very first ones they did. But it has always worked for me.  So I wonder how long it has had 7.5.0.22. I must have missed the short time it had the older version SW.

I wonder if the others around here are now working. I will take a ride on my SS9 to Colfax and see if it now works.

What was the number of the FW version that did NOT work with Energicas?

See my post here.  (https://www.electricmotorcycleforum.com/boards/index.php?topic=12438.msg118480#msg118480)The mystery is back at Grass Valley. There I said "Nevada City" by mistake (the next town).

Not that it makes a bit of difference, just a curiosity why it did work when it shouldn't have.

I will ride around on my Energica tomorrow checking other CP stations around here.

Not sure why that one station would work with Energica running the same firmware version as other chargers that do not work.

I am not sure where CP is with their roll out of the update. I believe 7.5.0.18 was the first version to cause issues.
Would be interested to hear the results of your "CP world tour" test.

If it's all done OTA, I assume it is very possible that they all have been done already. Perhaps updating 24/7.

Seeing the new version today at Grass Valley  (https://www.plugshare.com/location/182275)makes me think perhaps many others, if not all of them, are already done.

Strange how Grass Valley has never gave any problem to anybody. Note their "10" on Plugshare, which I normally only see with Tesla Superchargers. If all CCS was as reliable as the one in Grass Valley, that sure would fix a lot of charging issues. Nobody ever reported an issue there, not even my two Energicas when they were using the problem 0.18 FW. The only one that worked with the 7.5.0.18. Interesting, but I guess we will never know why that one worked to charge Energicas with the flakey FW version that would not work on any of the others I tried.

I will check either on two or three  CCS CPs tomorrow. If the one in Colfax (https://www.plugshare.com/location/217070) does NOT work, I probably won't bother with the ride up to Cisco Grove. One reason is unless I charge there in Colfax, I may not have enough range on my 2020 SS9- to make it to Cisco Grove. They do have a J-plug, but I am not going to wait around all day charging at 3 KW. I have my Experia in Reno. But if Colfax does work, I will go to Cisco Grove for sure.

I can also check the CCS here at the Auburn Target (https://www.plugshare.com/location/252066). I have never used that one. It's too close to home to be useful to me. But I can check that one out tomorrow also.

So tomorrow, check in here for the report of the three CP CCS locations.

BTW, riding to charge stations and checking in on Plug-Share with photos is kinda a hobby of mine. Either because they are new or because they are questionable. Today, I took my Zero DS to here (https://www.plugshare.com/location/482582) just to charge it up (6.4KW) to ride it back home. Nice to see charge stations out in the boonies!

I am glad to have a reason for a ride on my Energica tomorrow!

I am now charging my 2020 Energica Esse Esse 9- at 24 KW on the same CP charger that did not work last week. It now has 7.5.0.22 FW.

So great news and Cisco Grove is next.

I got to Cisco Grove and I first checked the version number. Here, it says it is the flakey 0.18 version, so I was very disappointed.

But I decided to try it anyway.

It works!!!  I am now charging at 23 KW here at Cisco Grove. It did not work on this bike when I tried the same charger a couple of weeks ago.

So I have a theory that can also explain why Grass Valley worked with the old version FW.  My guess is that they update the FW before they change the version number.

But whatever the reason, this location is an important one to me and it now works!  This one is important because I can charge my SS9- before taking Hwy 20 (or 80) back to Auburn.

I will check the version number here again in a couple of weeks.

Next stop is to try the Charge Point in Auburn. I will take Hwy 20 back to Auburn and charge up at the target there for a few minutes just to see if it works. Too close to home to bother with a full charge there, but I will check  the version number and see if it works regardless of the number.

So far, all good! Great news!

Misson completed.

All three CCS CPs work fine with my Energica SS9-.  The four CP CCS stns at the Auburn Target have the 7.5.0.22 version on the screen and so do both of them in Colfax.

The two in Cisco Grove still says it is version 7.5.0.18, but works perfectly on the same charger, same bike, that did NOT work a couple of weeks ago.

All the stations worked on the very first try, no BS at all. But the initiation was a bit on the long side on all three, around 15 seconds before the charge. So expect that. At least no timeouts.

IMO, these CPs work the best of all on our Enegicas.

But if you notice a version number of 7.5.0.18, still try it. That is the only way you will know for sure. I assume the one on Cisco Grove that says it is "7.5.0.18" is really running the "7.5.0.22" just the number itself is not updated.

So very good news, three checked and all three worked perfectly on the first try. CP is now my favorite CCS to use.

Next week, I will check the CP in Garnerville, NV. That is the last CCS before Bridgeport, CA on Hwy 395. I will probably ride my Experia all the way down the Bridgeport, CA then and get one of those delicious Baja Tacos from the B (https://www.facebook.com/TheBurgerBarnCA)urger Barn there. (https://www.facebook.com/TheBurgerBarnCA)  They are large, one is enough! The CCS chargers there are right across the street, but those are all
Electrify America at the Shell Gas Station.

I was just looking on Plugshare and I see there are a couple more CPs in the Auburn area I can check out tomorrow.

But I kinda assume they all work in central CA now.

BTW, forget about HWY 20 if you come up this way. I made a U-turn after ten miles. Too much construction on Hwy 20 (https://dot.ca.gov/caltrans-near-me/district-3/d3-news/d3-news-release-22-106#:~:text=Motorists%20should%20expect%2020-minute%20travel%20delays%20between%206,of%20highway%20between%20Conservation%20Road%20and%20Lowell%20Hill.) these days. They are making MAJOR changes. Flagmen are stopping traffic for a good 30 minutes. So I made a U-turn and went back here on I-80.

But when I do take 20, I really enjoy the ride where I turn off into very shady Willow Valley (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Willow_Valley,_California).

I was looking on Plugshare and I see a few other CPs I can check out today, since I have nothing better to do (retired). But I assume they all work with Energicas in this area, but I will post here later the info.

I hope I have as much luck with the CCS CPs in the Reno area, such as the one in Garnerville (https://www.plugshare.com/location/305386), which is free to use! Paid for by the City of Garnerville, a very pro-EV place. Last fast charger (other than Tesla) on the way to Bridgeport, CA.

Back here in Auburn, I first went to the Holiday Inn and charged  (https://www.plugshare.com/location/186974)with no issues. Both chargers there say they have the new 7.5.0.22 version.

I only charged up two KWH and then went on to here (https://www.plugshare.com/location/307160), where they have four CCS CPs, all four say they have the new 7.5.0.22 version in them. So I start a charge. In five minutes, the charging stops with the below error (see attached).

I didn't want to charge any more than that, as I was already above 80% SOC. So I didn't try again.  I don't know what to think of the error message.

I just discovered on Plugshare, that the number 3 CP charger at the Auburn Parking Lot is also only running for five minutes with cars as well.

It just happened that I picked a bad charger, has nothing to do with Energica or the updates.

This guy said with his Chevy Bolt, just a couple of days ago on the same CP CCS charger I used today that gave me the same issue:

"Charged my Bolt twice on #3 and both times it stopped charging after about five minutes. Now trying #1 and so far it's working."

I should add here that every CP I tried in the last couple of days started right up on the first try. I timed the initialization; it really was exactly 15 seconds.

So expect the charge to start 15 seconds after connecting.

I would say the CPs now work the best of them all on our Energicas.

Just because it's working in your little microcosm world does not mean it's working equally as well everywhere else.  Obviously it takes them weeks if not months to roll stuff out and even when, it still is quirky.  The way they are going by the time they get them all allegedly working, they'll update something else and it'll all be shit again.

I don't expect them all to work-yet. But I want to see the main ones that I will be using working. In the next few days, I will check the CP in Garnerville, NV, south of Carson City.

Now that CP knows Energicas exist, I doubt if we will ever see this problem again with CP.

I'll take that bet.

I'll take that bet.
I am not all that sure I wanna place a bet on that, but I would hope they would save the info. for the next FW update.

I wonder if a time ever comes when they don't require another FW update, that everything just works as it should for all.

Anyway, for now, that new CP FW works great. First try, every time, after the 15 seconds initiation.

Lately, I have noticed a lot of EV-GOs down. And for a long time, such as here (https://www.plugshare.com/location/86014),  and here. (https://www.plugshare.com/location/123513) And they don't seem to be in any hurry to fix them. And here, (https://www.plugshare.com/location/120131) where they have three out of four not working. But they are down for everybody, unlike the CP problem that worked for all except Energicas (AFAIK).

I tried the CP chargers by Dennys in Tehachapi and Mojave today.   None of the units would initiate a charge on my ‘22 Eva Ribelle.  The Tehachapi units listed the software version as 7.5.0.18.  The touch screens on all of the Mojave units are fried so I couldn’t pull up the information pages. ??

Looks like they have not yet done that area. The 7.5.0.22 is what you want, but I think the FW gets updated before the version number. So even the 0.18 are worth trying.

I assume any of them could work any day now.

BTW, that Denny's makes the Bourbon Chicken Skillet extra good. But I have only been there in my RVs. I noticed the CP charge stations there, but never had a chance to use them. I was there last on May 10 of this year, on my way back from Tucson, AZ.

I tried two CP chargers in Garden City Utah this weekend and both had .18 firmware yet one worked like a charm. So strange with the inconsistencies.

With the screens, sometimes if I wet my finger it helps but yea those screens are not great at all.

I expect the version number is last to get updated. It probably has the .22 but displaying as .18 for now.

This is my guess only because the .18 CP at Cisco Grove, CA did NOT work all and then worked perfectly a week later but still said it was .18. Something did change for sure--just not the version number. Same bike, same charger, same everything. Had the typical symptoms of the .18 at first, would stay stuck on the initializing screen but not charge and a week later with the same version number on the display worked exactly like all the other do with the .22.

I rode my Experia to Gardnerville, NV today.

Nice ride, but nothing accomplished with the CP there. Lots of construction, all roads closed to the charger, but not even that would stop me.

I parked the bike and walked to the charger. But even that did no good.

The charger seems to be working, but the screen is cracked in such a way that I cannot select the "About" from "Settings". I could select "settings" and see the "About" icon but not select it. I tried various things for a good 20 minutes to no avail.

But I guess it doesn't make any difference as we cannot use it anyway and by the time the construction is done, it will be a while and most likely be updated by then anyway. The way they have the roads dug up, I expect they will be working there for another month or so. There is a working EV-Go less than a half mile from there anyway, which I used today and then on to Markleeville, CA and then back home.  140-mile round trip. Nice day for a ride, but my main objective was not accomplished.

I tried another CP charger today that listed .18 firmware that worked. What I have noticed though is that the app will not track the charge correctly. Other than seeing the bike charging it will not display the duration, charge rate, or anything other really. Even in the charging history screen of the app after the fact. A step in the right direction but still a ways to go.

Yeah, I agree. It seems to me that CP is working as fast as possible to get the important stuff working for us, the rest they can take more time with.

BTW, I wonder what the .19, .20, .21 FW was or why they would skip over those three.

I care very little, and that only because of curiosity. Not enough to bother CP with it.

But I assume the versions between .18 and .22 they found other bugs before they were released. Often when one thing is changed and fixed with SW, it breaks something else. Kinda like when CP upgraded to the .18 version. It worked fine before that .18 "upgrade" on our Energicas.

All I really care about is if CPs now work. And it seems they do (at least most--and all that I have tried lately) and they all work very well.

BTW, it seems to me all the fast chargers from ANY company, EV-GO, EV-Connect, Electrify America, etc) all work much better than they did a year ago on our Energicas. It's been a while since any of them have not worked for me on the very first try.

Have others here noticed the same?  Seems the days we had to connect, disconnect, reconnect and try again are over with.  However, that did happen to me with the Tesla Magic Dock in Placerville, not sure if that should even count.

The big problem today is many CCS chargers have been broken for more than six months. And some very important locations such as here (https://www.plugshare.com/location/86014), where there is only one in the area. Messes up the rides I used to take on my SS9 around Lake Tahoe. Read the comments below there.

I went for a ride this morning to check the ChargePoint chargers at Hwy 58 and Comanche east of Bakersfield.  They have been upgraded to .22 and charged my ‘22 EVs Ribelle with no problems.  I also tried a charger by Denny’s in Tehachapi and it worked OK as well.  There was a nice RIVIAN R1S on the second charger.

Later this week I should be able to check the ChargePoint chargers by Denny’s in Mojave and at Brady’s on 395 near Inyokern.  I hope to find .22 rolled out everywhere.  Now if the ChargePoint station owners can just keep their units repaired.

I am hearing so many places that the charges are always OOC.  WTF is going wrong with them?  I mean come on burning them out that often?  Is there a design flaw with them or what?  Is it a actual hardware issue or is the credit card / processing gateway going down all the time and the owners, pretty much clueless how to reboot things etc etc,as gas station / restaurant owners are apt to be?

Many of the older Chargepoints are owned by the property owner. It is the norm that they are NEVER fixed when they are once out of warranty and break. They are expensive to repair and the property owner can only lose on the repair. We cannot blame them as they are not in business to lose money. This is what happened at the Chargepoint in Fallon, NV and I assume the CP in Middegate, NV. They will most likely never be repaired or replaced.

I was the one to convince Plugshare to make Fallon, NV a green location as only the J-1772 will be working there from now on. When we know a CCS charger will never be repaired, there is no reason for it to be orange on plugshare.

BTW, if a CP shows as ".18" try it anyway. I think sometimes the version number is not always updated--at least not at the same time as the charger FW.

BTW, there is a forum here (https://discuss.fastcharger.info/index.php) that is devoted ONLY to fastchargers.

I tried a CEP250 with the 7.5.0.18 firmware a week ago in Waukesha, WI.  No go, just stuck at the waiting screen.  I did have luck on a smaller 24kw chargepoint station just down the road at the Jaguar dealer.  It's a completely/smaller different model, kind of like the harley ones.

Those are the old Key Watt machines. They're slowly breaking and are past their service life aka if they break now they will not be repaired. Enjoy them while you can.

All the road constriction is now over with in Garnerville, NV and all roads to this charger (https://www.plugshare.com/location/305386) are now clear. This charger has been updated as it now works with my Energica. Screen still has an issue so I cannot check the version number, but the charger works perfectly on my Energica Experia. Just like all the others with the 0.22 FW. 15 seconds of initiation and starts right up--first try, every time.

BTW, this fast charger is free to use. Paid for by the city of Garnervile, NV. Also a free J-plug right next to it. And several others in the area. A very pro-EV town.

From there, a nice ride around Lake Tahoe today.

I checked out the ChargePoint CPE250s in Mojave and Brady’s (Inyokern) and found that both locations have been upgraded and will charge my ‘22 Eva Ribelle.  Hopefully the incompatibility problem with ChargePoint is now behind us.  I’m looking forward to again having expanded riding territory once the current heat wave in California is over.

I am starting to believe they have updated them all.

Has anybody found a CP CCS FC that did NOT work on an Energica in the last week or so?

All the ones I checked in the last couple of weeks worked perfectly with either of my Energicas. Including some that said they still had the old 0.18 version. I need to recheck those later to see if they updated the version number. Not that it makes any difference as they are working with our bikes and that is all that counts. Exactly 15 seconds of initiation and then the charge starts.

On the way back here to Reno today, I stopped at Cisco Grove, CA just to check the CP version number. This is the one that worked when it said it still had the 0.18 FW the first day I went up I-80 in CA checking CP fast chargers.

It now says it has 0.22 FW. So the version number gets updated last. So this means even if there are still some that say it has the old 0.18 FW, the only way you will know if it will work is to try it. But by now, I assume even all the version numbers are updated to 0.22.

By now, I doubt you will find any Chargepoints that still have the old version. They sure now work well with our Energicas. Exactly 15 seconds of initiation and charging starts every time, first try, on every CP I tried in the last month. And I have tried many.

I wish all the others would work as well as Chargepoints now do.

Now I see something going on with EV-Go. Looks like many of their chargers are in "maintenance mode" and will not work for anybody.  I think they are replacing them with new units, but many have been off-line for many months already.

If both these issues happened at the same time, we would have had a very big issue as ChargePoint and EV-GO are the two companies with the most CCS  fast chargers in the USA.
