I'm the (extremely) happy owner of a 22 Ribelle RS since a few months and did the last FW update.
Since then my range went from 125 miles average to ... 60 miles.
At first, i thought the bikes had to relearn the estimated range so didn't worry too much, then it was freezing cold so didn't took the bike too much and didn't bother. Now we are at 55-60°F and my range is still horrible.
Average consumption on odb is still normal so i should get usual range but i burn 1% per 0.6 miles roughly atm.
No warning light or message, no error code on self diag, no powerloss...
I ll get the bike reseted and updated again once my dealer is coming back from holidays but just in case it's not software related i trust more the experts on this forum than my dealer techie ;D
Any idea how i ve lost half of my battery capacity? Happened to anyone else?

That sounds not good.
Just to make sure, I understood right: You actually experienced the diminished range or is it just the range figure displayed on the screen?
Most probably that won’t help, but try the simple reset.
Ignition on, kickstand down, press both menu buttons on the left handle unit (front and back) the same time until the bike restarts.
Did you make sure it’s not related to any mechanical reasons?
Tire pressure?
Chain tension?

It's diminished real range not just the "guess-o-meter"
Tire pressure and chain tension didn't change and i checked that my Ribelle doesn't loose 30kg so my full battery is still here ;)
I ll try the reset with the fingers crossed

Could it be that you mainly or exclusively DC fast charged your bike? When was the last AC charge to 100% with full cell balancing? Hope you find a solution fast.

I'm 95% AC charging at home. Charger isn't faulty either as i charge my car on it also.
When i saw the range hit, i did charge to 100% to do a cell balancing but it doesn't change anything.

Just a little update. Problem isn't solved yet but i wanted to highlight the CS.
My dealer is closed this week for holidays so i wasn't expecting an answer to my mail before next week.
1h after i sent my email to my dealer, he came back to me, he already had a chat with Energica Italy and they planned actions to solve my issue as fast as possible.
This kind of CS is pretty rare even on high end brands so it's worth mentionning.
In the past years, i can tell you that i've seen Ducati leaving their dealers cleaning the factory mess without responding to them until i warned them that i'm going to fill a case.
And the situation isn't a lot better with cars even when you bought a 180k EV from them.
So Kudos to Energica (for the moment) and Tendance Roadster (Paris France) for their reactivity

Interesting, I just got my 2023 SS9 last week and feel like I should have more range. I ride 55mph or less and while I only have 330 miles on it I do think I should get 150mile range or better. When the foot of snow melts ill be back on it to test some more.

What range are you getting?
Is that 55 on secondary roads with uphill portions?
Do you accelerate and decelerate often during the ride?

I have a 22 Ribelle so I can speak to range I think. Slightly over 100 is reasonable going freeway speeds.
You would get more range going slower.

Firmware 42 included changes to how the bike calculated the speed that is displayed on the dash.
If you did a A/B test between fw41 and fw42 riding at the same indicated speed the range would be lower on fw42. This is because you are actually riding faster, thus consuming more energy.
Do note that cold temperatures have quite a significant impact on efficiency. I have seen a 10-15% reduction riding at 50*F vs 60*F.
Also keep in mind that the battery packs temperature may not match ambient temperature in some situations. For example if the temps overnight get down to say 35*F, due to the thermal mass of the pack it might still be at 40*F even through the air temp is at 60*F.

Just came home from a ride with the new 042 update.
I can confirm that the speedometer reading is now more accurate.
It isn’t plus 10 % anymore, but more in the range of plus 4-6 km/h.
At 55 km/h speedo, my GPS shows 51-52.
At 120 km/h GPS showed 114.
What I think is a setback compared to the earlier version is the range estimate.
The estimate is now total bulls**t.
In 041 version it was a reasonably prediction using the average of the last several minutes.
Now it seems to be more or less constant %SOC = km. See it yourself in the attached pics.
Started with 98 % and 120 km prediction which quickly fell to 90 somewhat outside urban.
Arrived home again having consumed 60 % SOC for 107 km. That should get me a residual range of more than 60 km.
So, for me the battery is OK but the range estimate is fu**ed up.

Sounds like my Typhoon Drone, Did FW update that was suppose to get rid of bugs, instead, it created more.
If it Anit broke don't fix it.

I cannot think of anything more useless than a range estimate on an electric motorcycle. Best to never look at it, especially in the hills. If going downhill your estimate will be extra high. And then you're lucky to get a third of that range estimate when you start going uphill.
Just use the SOC and figure out your range from that.
The range estimate is based on how you have been riding. Will always be higher after going downhill and lower after going uphill.
It would work well if the wind and hills didn't change as you ride. A good estimate of range in one direction means expect to get very poor range when you return the same way. Totally useless, IMAO!
It would make a lot more sense to base a range estimate on the SOC. Tesla seems to do that. Range left is around three times the SOC. IOW, 50% SOC means ~150 miles range left on a Tesla on every trip in either direction.

Range estimate takes 5 charging cycles so it's normal that it's f... at the beginning.
On my side, i start to think that my problem wasn't FW related. I had the bike shut off, showing a % of 0 (was 37% 2 seconds before). Restarted the bike, made like 10 meter and the bike died again.Got "undefinited fault" on the screen, bike couldn't be restarted, screen still black and even the red led wasn't flashing.
Pushed it to my garage (i've done sports for 2023 and beyond i think), plugged it on the wall box, bike wasn't detected. Unplugged it and thought i ll get it towed this week (got some business trips before)
Yesterday i check the bike and saw the red immobilizer led flashing, turned the bike on. Battery percentage at 0%. I plug it and it start to charge. I planed a cell balancing but the bike couldn't charge past 57% and started balancing at 57% (...) I left it plugged for hours and still the bike doesn't charge above 57%. Didn't try to drive it, i think i ll get it towed instead.
All in all i think that my problem sounds more like a faulty battery pack instead of a FW issue. I ll have more info end of the week i think and will keep you posted.

That's awesome that they made the speedo more accurate! It was one of the main complaints of owners that I've seen.
Interesting about that SOC calc change. May not be a bad thing. I live on top of a hill and my range estimate is always way off because of the way it calculates it so I think the new version may actually work better in my case.
Now if only we didn't have to go all the way to the dealer to update the fw... Is there anything else in the new firmware that we should absolutely need to go update it?

In my view, yes.
My dealer explained to me that the update redeems a problem with inaccurate cell balancing which over time would lead to bad performance during accelerations (sudden power reductions).
If the SOC calculation gets better over time as Valen indicated in his post yesterday, I am not too sure about that.
Unfortunately after having the warmest new year day since weather recordings we are now facing a long period of cold and rain. So I will not be able to confirm if that is the case (no bike riding for me in cold and rain 8)).
I agree to Don that the SOC calculation is not helping anyway e.g. you if you are heading to the mountains.
To me the bad SOC calculation is not a major problem, but it pains me every time when I see a working system fail because of an update ::)

OP, any updates on your range issue? Are you actually getting less range or is it just the displayed range?
How much does it cost to upgrade the fw at the dealer?

Update was free of charge - my Ribelle is less than one year old.
I had the chance to squeeze in another ride last weekend, but the situation with range estimation has not improved.
Moreover, some displayed infos during charging are also fu**d up.
Arriving home with 46% SOC I plugged the bike in with a 13 A (3.0 kW) charger limit. Look at the attached screenshot.
- Finished my ride with quite a lot of urban traffic, so the residual range should have been well above 100 km.
- Estimated time left to X% SOC is way too short
- Charging power kW is displayed higher than actually true
- Charging current A is displayed higher than actually true and even higher than pre-set current.
Unneccessary as these faults are, neither performance nor battery capacity seem to be compromised in any way. So I regard these errors as secondary.
Nevertheless it annoys me a lot! I will prepare a detailed e-mail for my dealer with pictures that he can forward to Energica and ask for advice.
Still it might be that the situation improves after some more charging cycles as indicated by Valen, but I don't have much hope. I will keep you posted.

So here is the final update. I spent a day at the dealer and we spent a day exchanging with the factory on the phone. When they plugged my bike on the computer it showed a lot of error codes. We did a freeze frame and the factory took control remotely on the bike to check everything.
My diminished range (real one not just the estimate) was probably related to a bug on the software of the battery management, it was not related to the FW so it was bad luck. They did a file verification and now the bike has the right consumption, did 50km to check it and it's fixed.
The bike shutting down wasn't also related to the firmware, the above bug probably put the bike in emergency shutdown mode. It was fixed and the bike is again working perfectly. So this part is solved for now.
About the range estimate:
My dealer updated a press Ribelle RS yesterday before i arrive. After the update it showed 21 miles estimate for 71% battery which isn't great as the bike was supposed to do a range test for the press today ;D ;D ;D
While they were working on my bike, I took the press bike for a spin to make sure that real consumption wasn't fucked up and when i came back bike was at 51% and i did 26 miles in sport mode riding agressively. The bike showed 49 miles after the spin. The instant and average consumption were perfectly accurate. So real life range isn't affected.
Bottom line as other stated, despite the funny figures on the range estimation, the real range and battery capacity aren't affected. I could test in on 2 bikes (mine, the press one) and an Experia that was delivered the same day had the same "issue" (range estimate was like 65 miles at 100%)
The FW does mess up the range estimate at first for sure. I had the same issue with my Taycan as the vehicule has to "relearn" to guess the range. However, on the Energica the starting numbers are just.... embarassing
With every charging cycle it gets more accurate (tested that). Doing a cell balancing helps (but doesn't magically solve the issue) and the more you ride the better it gets (tested that on both bikes)
Even if the issue is annoying i've to say that i was pretty impressed by the efficiency of the staff (at my dealer) but also at the factory to solve my issue yesterday.

That makes me sleep better, knowing it's a FW f*ckup instead of the bike being faulty.
If weather stays dry for a reasonable time I will try to have a ride on the weekend to see if the numbers really improve on my bike.

Thanks for the information shared. Makes me definitely want to postpone the update, despite my craving for a more accurate speedo. Looking at the data, my impression is that the bike 'thinks' there is a small (useable 10kWh) battery installed: that's more or less in line with the remaining charging time and range estimate. Range is estimated by dividing available battery capacity by average consumption over the last 10km. This(FW) is the achilles heel of Energica, I have had a lot of these bugs introduced in 5 years of FW updates that needed fixing later. Embarrassing that they don't have this under control.

That's exactly my feeling also. hopefullyIt seems to get better overtime.
Funny thing, as i got nervous i'm checking my mileage more often and it appears i got a small increase in efficiency so in real life range. ;D

@ Valen: Braved cold and wet weather this weekend and made two tours. Unfortunately, no improvement.
You wrote it needs 5 charge cycles, of which I have done 4 so far. I did not see anything change, so in my view there is no such thing as a learning curve of the bike's systems. For me it looks like there are some factors simply wrong.

Mine went from a wooping 47km range estimate to around 150km now. It's still getting better even if it is not yet accurate (to be polite)

Hello everyone.
A few things to keep in mind.
The battery's temperature will affect it's capacity a lot, although you already know this. These batteries have a LOT of thermal mass to them, so if it got cold overnight, just because it warmed back up a bit, it can still take hours for the battery to warmup too.
If you started out with a cooler battery and got xx range, rode it a bit, possibly jumped on it hard once or twice and warmed that battery pack up a bit, THAT right there is going to totally change your initial range because the temperature is significantly higher now and the battery is probably running much more efficient and you are able to squeeze more out of it.
Id keep an eye on SOC, and if you can, KW consumed to do the math on how much range you have left, as there are so many variables that will affect the range that estimates are kind of worthless IMO. If you got a 20 KW battery and ate 15 of it already, it does not take a genius to see that you do NOT have 100 km of range left.
Please let us know how your bike is working after they worked all the bugs out.
What WERE these faults exactly? How did this not get caught when you bought it or when a diag was done on it initially at time of sale? I don't like the sound of 'corrupted software'. How easily does this happen?

Battery temp is not the issue, because the range still was totally off when I really had pushed the bike on the Autobahn, bringing the battery temp indicator to yellow.
Doing the math in my head with SOC and kilometers already driven of course gives me a good indication and after having driven the bike 11000 km since July I think I have a pretty good feeling about how far I can go.
As I said it is not a serious issue, it is an annoyance. Considering the premium we paid for the bikes I thought I could expect a more dilligent testing of updates.
Reported the issue to my dealer last week who promised to forward it to Energica. No answers yet. Looking at the problems some of us have/had with getting reactions from Energica, I do not have much hope that I will hear from them soon. But I will keep you posted.

I have very little faith in some of the 'dealers' ..... to do the right thing...... I'll leave it at that.
Your best bet may be to write to the company directly. Either way though, IF something has to be done, it WILL have to be done, thru the dealer, so you are kind of stuck there. Id keep bugging the dealer. Keep on his ass until you hear something. Remember, out of sight, out of mind, when you hand up the phone, YOUR problem becomes tiny now.
To try to be fair here. Many of the dealers also deal in many other brands of bikes, and repairs in general, so in all honestly YOUR problem is one of many they have going on, so possibly can get lost in the hubris of day to day business.
Given that each person's experience IS going to be a bit different, because each person has a different road they travel down. (Sorry I couldn't help myself ;D ) there really is no cookie cutter magical formula that is going to work for everyone.
What if.... they gave us a user adjustable offset. Ok, so for example in MY situation I find that their range estimates are always about 10 percent high from what I really get, so i tap a menu and adjust the 'offset' to -10 percent. In YOUR case, your range estimates always seem to be low, so you would go in and offfset YOUR estimate by Your percentage. This way we truly could tweak the numbers to be more accurate for us. and it kind of lets them off the hook a bit too because they can say, well YOU have the ability to fine tune it to 'YOUR' driving patterns. etc.
Just some food for thought, that could be a quick fix that can make things slightly less annoying.

My dealer is a bit uncommon, because it's a company originally building electrical cabinets and installations for industrial users and selling electric household stuff. But the owners were very interested in electric mobility, so since several years now they deal with electric bikes and scooters of different manufacturers. The bike guys including one of the bosses own themselves electrical bikes, and they are extremely helpful when I have issues.
I regard myself lucky to have bought there, because you are right saying that with 'normal' bike dealers you are only one of many. Originally I wanted to buy at a Ducati dealer who quoted me the full recommended price for his showroom Ribelle with more than 1000 km on the clock. When I contacted them later needing spare parts they didn't even bother to return my call >:(
News about my botched update:
My dealer contacted me after having discussed the problems with Energica. They want me to come in to have the update re-uploaded and get the logs from the bike's data storage.
It's a drive of some distance for me, so I will have to wait until the weather turns dry and a bit warmer (wet 1°C now :'().
Will keep you posted as soon as I have news.

I'm also on v42 now and can confirm the range prediction is not correct anymore. (Ribelle 2020 version)
To bad on v41 is was rather correct.
2 pics, went to work after the update next morning: 49% SOC range 40km >:( normal not a problem.
Range to work is about 63 km, ok just went anyway, we will see. (It was never a problem, so just go :) )
Did normal ride, 120 km/h on the highway ans indeed no problem.
On arrival: 8% SOC range 7 km.
So range prediction is just f*cked up in v42 cann't trust it anymore, no I'm driving on SOC.
I;ve keyless option, this should be better but "key out of range" Message is still there.
Difference is now I see it once and after the message cleared be pushing ok, the second time you get not the message but a little key symbol in the display.
Sp problem still there, message behavior is changed.

I totally agree with you, the approx. 60 km you went to work using about 40 % SOC sound totally OK, so there is no problem with the battery or so. The bike is working fully OK and that's a relief to know.
About the keyless function issue, I cannot contribute anything. I bought a showroom Ribelle without it, but if it would have had the function, I would have asked the dealer to deactivate it. Sorry, that doesn't help you now.
A question to you: When you are charging, does your charging time estimation still match or it is distorted as well?

Commuting is no problem in the cold (well sometimes I miss the heat of the engine when waiting for a traffic light :-X )
The performance off the batterie is also ok in the cold. So no problems there. (I do not drive with snow or ice conditions)
Keyless can't bij deactivated, there is no other way to start the bike. The message is annoying, but thats it. No the alert message comes ounce and then the key symbol. So I disregard it.
For me it was the other way around, I ordered a Ribelle with a key, but delivery was difficult (covid time) and the dealer called me, I've got one but is has the keyless option, so that was a no brainer, I'll take it 8)
And it's handy, key in the pocket. Now I have it, I like it. Key always stays in my pocket with zipper.
I do not notice other behaviour with the charging estimation, that seems to be ok and is a match.

I ordered my Experia with that keyless option. IIRC, it cost around 400.00 US$ more. I wonder if I made a mistake to order it, or perhaps it works better on the Experia. I guess I will find out, perhaps by the end of this month (Feb).

The key not in range issue with the keyless ignition is the result of a firmware update. I think is was the firmware after 28 that caused it and Energica was never been able to fix it.

Was at the dealer today discussing the key fob issue. I also would have preferred a normal key, but there were no bikes in stock with that config.
Dealer also sells ducatis, and the ducati keyless fob system has the same problem.
Europe has much stricter transmission power regulations for electronic transmission devices. I wonder if the key fob is just neutered in terms of broadcast signal. I would bet that is the issue.
Same issue with drone video transmission power. Europe only alows a fraction of what you are allowed to use in the USA.
I may just use strong velcro and a backup strap to keep the key fob very close to the receiver while riding.

I get the extending the fob's transmission but were talking inches here, not feet or meters, it seems more to me like it's acting like one of those smart cards where it has to be in a magnetic field to energize it to transmit it's frequency to activate / talk to the bike, so that would be an xmitter thing on the bikes end, not so much a fob end issue. Given you are not actually pressing any buttons on the fob, it's not really transmitting until it's close enough to get into the field which creates a current in it to power it and then it talks...
I also get the wanting a limited range thing too, you don't want to be sitting 40 feet away in a restaurant and having your fob activate your bike for someone to drive off on, but at the same time, id like a few feet range at least so lets say I wanted to turn it on and walk around the bike to check to see if the lights are all working etc it does not go out of range. not sure this is possible unless Energica goes with one of those 'high field' transmitters like they use on security gates etc, and perhaps puts the thing, maybe under the seat or something so it's centered on the bike to get a radius of a few feet around the mike MAYBE....
Just thinking out loud. This might not be an easy fix.

I suppose it's a software bug. I driven 1,5 year without this message, after upgrading to a new FW version (v32 I think, not sure anymore) the "key out of range" message came, several times.
The first time you think, sh*t lost my key !!! but after a few times you get use to this message ;)
It not a real problem, click ok and message is gone, the bike doesn't stop or anything else, so annoying but no problem.
In that FW the "pincode" was also introduced (A bike with keyless option, can also be started with a pincode if you forget the key).
So maybe the bike checks more often if the key is there? No idea.
Sometimes I got the message 5 or 6 times on a drive to work, sometimes I drive 3 to 4 times the same road to work no warning message. No idea where the trigger is coming from. (maybe other cars nearby?)
So it was not a problem, but now it is.
In the new FW the message just pops up ounce and the the little key pops up in de screen, less annoying. (key symbol is new)
Everything still works ok and keyless function with starting the bike also, so I don't think it's a range issue.

If interference from any other electronic device was causing the key not in range problem then it would have been an issue from the beginning. It wasn't. As frank_b said, it showed up at Fw 32. It wasn't an issue on Fw 28.

The topic title is not correct however, the estimated range is not correct after update.
The vehicle range is still the same.
And I can confirm that, the estimate range was quite accurate, but after updating to s/w v42 it's not anymore, but a lot less.
Like my picture: 49% SOC estimate range: 40 km, complete off. I drove 62 km and still had 9% SOC. (And it was ok before update)
So something is changed in the calculation, it just not correct anymore.
So we arrived at the update and not the real drive range, and so the keyless problem popped up, also introduced with a software update.
Conclusion could be that the updates from Energica could be better tested before going live.
On the firmware which was on the bike when I bought here both problems: range/keyless were not there, introduced in the firmware.

I drive the Energica always the same: Powersetting: max, Regen 1 speed: legal limit +20 km/h :-X
Range was quite accurate, mostly because I always drive consistent.
On my way to the dealer: also correct.
On my way from the dealer (bike had the s/w update) -> estimate a lot lower.
Nothing else changed, still the same driver, same drive style, same charging (90% of the time AC load before drive to 100% and balancing) 10% Fast DC loading.
So my conclusion: software introduced.
Now I drive on the SOC not the estimate range.

Thanks jotjotde for confirming the assumption that the problem wasn't with wrong calculations but with the need to build up new data on actual energy consumption and range due to memory purge.

I don't have this problem, so it looks like the dealer is correct and the problem is caused by the charger.

I got my 2023 Dec 20. They had charged it up to 98% and unplugged it while balancing. Had 5 total miles on the odometer. Range showed 41 miles I got home going 75ish miles for 55 miles at 36%. I now have 1300 miles on it and never seen a range greater than 70 miles. I charge to 80% and I have a scenic route of 82 miles that I take a few times a week. Average about 50mph and get back with about 20ish% The entire time, every time it starts out at 42mile range and get home with about 30 mile range. I picked it up with .042 FW. I do hope it gets a better estimate.

As long as I can remember, the predicted range has always been based on the battery capacity divided by AVG consumption of last 10km times SOC. On FW 41 I have seen the following figures in one day, 3 hours in between:
(193 x 8,0)/ 100% =15,4 kWh (last 10km easy traffic)
(73 x 15,3) / 73% = 15,3 kWh (head wind)
(range x AVG_cons)/SOC = kWh available
It is totally not in Energica's interest to have displayed range take so long to come to accurate values; newbies would have nervous test drives and sub optimal rental experiences. For the ones who experience the low range, it's interesting to do the math and see what capacity is the outcome. Unfortunalety none of the pictures in this thread show the consumption screen.

Your comment has merit, maybe they should have an option where the user can set how the bike determines this. Range based on average consumption over the last 10 / 25 / 50 / 100 miles type thing. OR the bike even just does this in the background and says, ok he's all over the place, we better stick with last 10, or. ok he's pretty consistent over the last 50 miles so lets go with this as a solid for the rest of the trip.

The big problem with "range" is the return trip when conditions are the opposite. Such as first going downhill with the wind and then needing to come back the same distance but in the opposite direction. Even SOC will not be accurate for such, but it will be a lot closer than the "range" that was displayed on the way down.

But once you have made that 'round trip' a few times and it's in memory, then it knows that for the 100 miles or whatever the trip is, THIS is about where you should end up at. So it may be a bit low on the down side but even out on the back up side. Although that would be a lot to ask for, lets say you did have a varied trip like that, BUT it is going to be a very frequent trip, THIS is the trip I make 5 days a week, for the next 10 years type thing. Being able to tell the bike. Ok this next profile I am going to put in, is the entire trip charge to charge. calculate it and figure it out.
To be honest though if you do have the same trip over and over, you really don't need the bike to tell you how much is left, you should already know :)

Another artifact of the 42 update I found this morning on my commute into work. The ambient temp was about 10 degrees Fahrenheit high this morning. Temps were definitely in the 30's this morning and my ambient temp never dropped below 44 degrees. Maybe I hit a bottom limit on the new firmware or it's actually off. I'll double check it on the way home this afternoon.

My SS9 came on .42 firmware and has always been about 10 degrees above ambient. We traded a more accurate speedo for a less accurate temp gauge. :D

As you should anyway. If there was a way to turn off the range in the display, I would do such. It is the most useless thing on the bike. Less than useless, the way it works on Energicas. It can get one in trouble if they rely on it. It recalculates around every 10 KM. That makes it less than useless. In that 10KM you could be going mostly downhill with uphill being next. Your range left will be shown to be great going downhill and extra poor when going uphill. Best to not have it at all. Use SOC times whatever your average range is in km and you will be MUCH more accurate than the less than useless range display.
IMO, range should be based on SOC and nothing else. Tesla does such. Range (in miles) is always three times my SOC no matter where I am, going downhill or uphill.
One possible exception: Better could be the way the "range" works in my Chevy Bolt. At all times, it shows "max range" "average range" and "min range" at all times. That is the only time a "range estimate" on an EV is somewhat useful. So when I am getting the "max range" going downhill with the wind, I know to use the "min range" to get back.

Even after putting in a new battery (3.3v) just a couple of weeks ago, I already have to keep the fob close to the receiver antenna under the left front side panel again, not to mention the annoying key not in range message.

My ambient temp readings have always been way off. I haven't seen any indications that it is worse now with Fw 42.

A change of front, (or rear sprocket), will help with speedo accuracy....changed the front 15t sprocket to a 16t sprocket on my Experia, sorted the speedo error, it's now +/- 1kmh of GPS now.

My Experia speed shows about one MPH high at freeway speeds. My SS9 is about 7 or 8 MPH high. A big difference.

My dealer e-mailed me Friday and asked me to visit them for an update. According to what he wrote, the new update will redeem the inaccuracies of the range prediction.
As the weather is still crappy here, I am not sure when I will find the time to get there. If anyone gets this update of the update earlier, I would be very thankful for a feedback about it! :-*

I have 042, Energica says it was updated prior to shipment in January, First full charge went 101 miles down to 20% SOC, I have since done 3 full charges and 2 balance's now at 100% after full charge I get 132 range, sport mode mostly highway riding.

Just installed it yesterday, it does fix the range estimate issue. If you upgraded your bike and it shows a huge consumption or a crappy range still, just reset your trip and it ll work as intended.

To my understanding the not-so-perfect balancing of the cells with FW041 could cause problems eg at high accelerations and restrict the power output.
That was corrected by the 042 together with an improved speedometer accuracy.
I don’t know if that balancing issue is detrimental to the battery in long term.
Maybe discuss this with your dealer.

I use my Ribelle RS for commuting and Fw 042 made a big difference in acceleration and the ability to safely pass cars on the way home. Whether or not upgrading to Fw 042 makes sense for you all depends on how you ride. I try to get past cars and back in my lane as quickly as possible so fast acceleration is important. If you rarely do this and don't care about the speedo being accurate then updating your firmware to 042 isn't a big deal.

I was previously on 042 but had the messy estimated range so it appears that it is a hotfix of the 042 that hides its name. I didn't remember my previous BDY or DSB so wrote them above in case something is different
My dealer received this hotfix last week or so and had to check with my VIN if my bike was on the list. Update takes around 30 min.
Bottom line, my bike now behaves normally range wise

I got my 2023 ss9 Dec 20th and my .042 has a lower ver number. Im excited to see my range accuracy possibly improve with a newer ver. As well as my ambient temp and get the service wrench off...2700 miles on it.

If it is a "oups sorry we messed up" hotfix maybe they just want to keep low profile.
Anyway, no matter the name it fixed it for me.
Also, when i first used the hotfix, the range didn't go up (actual consumption was like 50% more important than usual). I just reseted the trip on the dash and it fixed everyhting

We darn. I did notice that on a 65-70f deg day is was only about 6 off. Ive only ridden in sub 30ish degs since I owned it.

No, that's not possible.
TBH that OTR stuff I cannot find sexy. Updating Microsoft SW on my computers is getting on my nerves quite enough - don't need that with my rolling stuff. I like Energica for not being like Zero!
I'm a leisurely 3-hrs drive (including one charge stop) away from my dealer as well. Next week weather looks nice enough to go there and I will take a day off from work.

How long does that generally take?
Yes yes, I know it depends on the dealer, how busy he is, bla bla but is this something that if you made an appointment, got the bike there in the morning, and nothing major bad was wrong, they could get the bike back to you at the end of the day, or should one plan on spending the night or more down at the dealership's vicinity?
I have little faith in my current dealer to begin with after the treatment I got on sale date so am wondering when it does come time to make a road trip, how long I should plan for.

The 1k check took less than an hour.
For update and 15k service I have an appointment for the morning and I will wait for it there. I recon it will take about 2 hours.
The worst that could happen is that the rear brake pads are worn down, I haven't checked myself yet.
As far as I remember the 15k service is mainly gear oil change and maybe brake fluid and coolant replacement (of the latter I have my doubts because those are usually replaced bi-anually - need to check that in the manual yet). Otherwise lots of visual checks.
The update takes usually about 20 min.
Be advised: After updating the MIL (yellow motor symbol on the display) lights up. You (or the dealer) need to put the bike in the GO-modus four times to make it dissapear.

Unfortunately no - that only resets the MIL.
The MIL lights up after a software update.
According to my knowledge, the service sign is independent from that and can be reset only by accessing the bike's software via OBD.

Found out why firmware 042 made problems and why they were resolved without the need for a new firmware version.
According to my dealer the actual cause for the range issue was not with firmware 042 itself but rather with the software that was used to install the firmware on the bike. The latter had a bug that caused the issues discussed in this thread. By eliminating said bug from the installer it now is able to install version 042 correctly. Therefore bikes treated with the latest bug fix will still display firmware no 042 - and run fine.
Hope this is the full truth as I will have firmware 042 installed on my SS9+RS on Monday.

Made a nice tour to my dealer on Friday for eliminating the range calculation bug and for the 15000 km service.
The bug dissapeared and my Ribelle has got new brake and gear fluid. :D
Back wheel brake pads are down to approx. 2-3 mm but weren't changed yet (I use the brake a lot e.g. for crawling speed and tight turns). BTW, tires were replaced earlier (at 13300 km).
Took approx. 2 hours during which I chatted with the dealer guy (and he told me about a hassle they had with Zero - they actually will sell no Zero's this year ::)).
Cost me 199 €, but I got coffee and some kWh for free.

So, now I'm running firmware version 042 on my Esse Esse 9+ RS, too. The good news is that the range estimation is still ok and the speed deviation is reduced to 4 to 5 percent. Alas, the issues with the keyless system got worse. Despite a brand new battery I get key out of range messages galore. This happens when turning the ignition on as well as while driving. This is completely unacceptable. Either Energica has to solve these issues once and for all in fw version 043 or exchange the keyless hardware under (extended) warranty.

Im sorry to hear about your keyless issue. I'll get that on mine as well but generally once it hits and you press the mode button to bypass it, it won't come up in your face again, unless you turn the bike off and back on.
One other thing I have noticed which I am sure really should have nothing to do with it is... it seems to happen more on windy days.
I have come to keep my key either in my left pocket, either pants or leather jacket, so it's right there near the sensor to try to minimize this.
Maybe this is something they should make it so it's just a little message at the bottom of the screen when you are driving and NOT this huge in your face forcing you to acknowledge when riding. I understand that yah, if you drop yoru keys while driving this could be a problem you need to know, but still. too annoying.
It's like microsoft mentality... your keyboard is missing...... press any key to continue.

I have no problems with my keyless. I've seen the key not in range message but only a handful of times. I wonder if it's maybe because I ride more in rural areas with less radio interference or something?

Not sure about the potential of contextual factors like the ones mentioned. To me, it looks like Energica has used cheapish hardware. I never had the slightest problem with the keyless system of my Superduke R. So keyless needn't be a problem per se, only if you take second-rate components. As many here have stated before, I regret having purchased a keyless Energica.

TBH I haven't checked the FW number yet and the dealer did not explain. I was happy that the range issue is gone now.
Sorry to hear about your problems with the keyless. Could it be interference with e.g. your mobile phone?
I don't know consumer protection laws in Switzerland but in the EU you can give back the bike after the third unsuccessful repair attempt.

The "key not in range" issue is a software problem, not a hardware problem. If you go back to Fw 28 or older it was never a problem. There are other threads here that talk about that.

Agreed, I firmly believe it’s a software issue as well. I never had issues with my fob until my first software update (v 40 I think but I’m probably wrong). I’ve replaced the battery so many times since it seems to work better (but not the same as pre-updates) with a fresh battery. Unfortunately it never lasts more than a few days before the issues arise again.
My uneducated guess is that somewhere they changed the required signal strength for the bike to consider the fob valid but only Energica knows for sure.
With all of the anecdotal reports of fob issues over the past couple of years I would have hoped Energica would have at least acknowledged it, if not fixed it by now. The one area I’m disappointed in Energica’s otherwise really good customer focus.

To be honest, about the keyless i suspect that there was a change of parts around 2020 or so and that the "new" one doesn't behave as good as the old one with 42.
For the record my 22 Ribelle RS is having way more keyless issue than when i bought it

Did they even have the keyless available back then? On my 2020 SS9-, purchased in Aug of 2019, I don't think they had keyless available. If they did, I was not aware of it.

I understand the arguments for the software being the cause of the keyless issues. However, I have a hard time understanding why Energica would risk frustrating and angering its customers by not fixing this problem over multiple firmware revisions.

My 2020 SS9 (13kw) didn't have a keyless option but the again I bought the unit that was on the dealer's floor. My Ribelle was the first time I saw the option to spec out a keyless ignition.
Needless to say that if I find myself in the market for a new bike, I doubt I'll go keyless unless it's the only option.

My2021 Ribelle is keyless BUT still on factory original firmware - the "out of range" feature was added afterwards same w/ PIN entry feature - I can live w/ both omissions as bike functions flawless inclusive of range estimation.
Once FW is updated one cannot revert back hence the hesitation to change but interested in this thread hoping some day Energica will get it sorted, but me thinks the issues w/ keyless is indeed hardware...
When bike is switched off the keyless works perfectly. When bike is switched on, there are (2) sources of electro-magnetic interference, one is the traction drive the other is the onboard charger. My FOB needs to be in close proximity to steering head for bike to discern the signal when charging - doesn't matter once the bike is "GO" as the FW doesn't monitor FOB and when one stops the interference subsides so bike switches off just fine.
The level of EMC interference on a ICE vehicle is not comparable and there's no practical way of shielding that will work w/o additional hardware measures.

The entire thing works well in my Experia and I like the keyless.
And I have tried all three ways with the bike. Using the PIN number, using the FOB active and using the FOB passive (with the FOB battery removed). It all works quite well, I have no complaints.
But I have seen the "FOB out of range" message while riding. Perhaps because I keep the FOB in my right pocket.

Tested the range of the fob after I had firmware 042 installed yesterday. No chance to use it in a pocket of my pants or jacket. Even if it is placed in the middle of the "tank" of the SS, it does not work consistently. It must be no more than 35 cm from the steering head. And that's with a brand new CR2032 battery. Pathetic.

Same on my Experia, it has V042 and when riding I have the FOB in the frunk, less than 30cm from the sensor in the dash. On a 50km ride I can see up to 6 "Key Not In Range" faults.

Suggest a quick Keyless range test to verify interference from traction drive...place bike on paddock stand or get the wifey / good buddy to participate because the bike needs to be switched "ON" and motionless w/ side stand up.
Enable running by activating "GO". Slowly move FOB away from the bike until the out of range alert occurs.
Report back your results.
When motor is turning is when RF emissions occur, the greater the load the greater the interference inclusive of regen.
There's no magic here...software cannot fix the Keyless range functionality unless it ignores it or samples at no load which is a viable approach for future FW updates.

PWM, if there is RFI coming from the motor or inverter, or whatever, pretty much NOTHING is going to fix it besides a more powerful keyfob transmitter. That would have to be a custom thing, because they all pretty much use the same cheap piece of shit circuit board / xmit circuit in all of them. Now THAT is going to need a new certification from the FCC, etc etc, major pain in the ass. I don't see that happening.
Software CAN fix it, by turning that fkn nag OFF once the bike is in motion. Ok I start it, I get it in 'go' mode,now turn the GD keyfob error crap OFF until I park it again. OR... have it activate ONCE, to alert the driver, he acknowledges it and NOW it is deactivated until the bike is parked. Thinking here is OK, the sob is not talking, stop being like a wife I HEARD YOU THE FIRST TIME STOP NAGGING !!!
If it's out of range because you dropped your keys at 60 MPH, guess what, they are NOT going to undrop and FIX that situation, so WHY KEEP TELLING ME !!! Telling me again 10 miles down the road doesn't do dick, to help me reFIND THEM !! SHUT UP...
NOW...if you are nagging me and I got my keys in my pocket, then it's a nuisance alarm, STOP SHOWING IT. Turn it into a NON nuisance alarm. show it once, it gets ack then leave it alone until bike is RESTARTED.
You said to slowly walk away from the bike until the alarm comes up. That might not work. Is there a time delay on how long it has to be out of range? Let's say there is a 30 second delay. You go out of range at say 4 seconds / 5 feet from the bike but won't know until you are 50 feet from the bike. May not be very helpful info.
Why is it that some of the things that are really simple fixes, are the ones that are almost impossible to get anyone to work on?

Software CAN fix it, by turning that fkn nag OFF once the bike is in motion. Ok I start it, I get it in 'go' mode,now turn the GD keyfob error crap OFF until I park it again.

Just for a historical perspective on the "key not in range" problem but it was two years ago, April 2021 that I started a post on this problem after seeing after getting my firmware updated. So after two years this problem still hasn't been fixed. At the time the easy fix was to get the old Fw reinstalled which is what I did. Doubt that is still available though. Bottom line is software is not a strong point of Energica's.
