Title: Just got a 2023 esseesse 9rs
Post by: joesedroid on December 22, 2022, 08:49:08 PM
Hello all,
Just got this bike this week, so far I think I really like it however I do have some questions im not finding answers for...
Cannot connect to app/Bluetooth on any phone Android or iPhone Any hints or tips? (found out my bike probably doesnt have the BT adapter?)
Seems like it is powered on when plugged in, tail light is on. Is that normal?
incorrect ambient temp (off by 15-20 deg)
So far I can go about 110 miles on a 100% charge. Seems a bit off from the 261 range. I averaged about 40 mph.
Thanks all any help would be greatly appreciated !!

Yes, it's normal for the lights to be on while charging, even if in the LPR mode. You will have a reduced range when cold, which it must be there in Colorado in December. On a nice warm day, you will notice a big difference in your range.

IAC, don't expect the range estimates to be accurate. Too many variables. But sometimes on warm days it will seem you're getting better than spec.  And average speed means little compared to a steady 40 mph.

There is no Bluetooth when the bike is off (unlike Zeros). I never use the Bluetooth with my Energica. I have a Garmin GPS on it with a directory for charge stations.

Nice christmas gift you got 🥳

My Ribelle‘s lights are off while charging. You can adjust that in the preferences menu (bike ON, kickstand down or quickstop enganged - press menu toggle left for 3 seconds).

The 110 miles range is not bad, depends quite much on your riding style. High accelerations though highly fun draw heavy on the battery. The 260 miles range are possibel for urban riding I think.

Incorrect ambient temp is not uncommon, my reading is 4 degree Celsius off.
Most probably you will also notice the speedometer reading to be about 10% higher than measured with GPS.

Good info, thank you
Yes, Ive owned about 25 bikes and really not one of them had an accurate speedo, this one is as close as any of them though so im used to it. Thought I heard somewhere its for safety. I really hope the ambient temp is something that is calibrating or can be fixed. I really like that on bikes.
Im sure the range drops in a linear amount due to temp but it would be cool to see numbers. Like at 80F its 200 range and at 35 and less is 100 miles, or something like that. Probably not near exact enough to do number.

Harley's and Zeros are on the nose (within one MPH). All European bikes read around 10% high. I think this is because of the speed cameras used in Europe that are almost everywhere.

What charging cable came with the bike?

I did not get a charge cable, thought that was odd. I called the dealer and they will get back with me.
Im guessing that too was removed from the 2023 models?

In Switzerland, only the RS versions of the SS9+ and Ribelle come with a free charging cable. With the standard versions it has to be purchased separately. Don't know about the Experia.

I confirm your bike includes a EVSE. Just let the team at Green Eye know what version you need (plug type) and they will get you taken care of.

In Germany my RS came including Mennekes charge brick, a cover for the bike and the splash guard.

Getting back to the Ambient temperature thoughts.
Does anyone know where the sensor is for it? Id love to take a look, maybe they left some foam packing material on it thats insulating it??
Ha, but if the sensor could easily be replaced maybe thats a place to start.
Anyone one have a manual that might show where the sensor is?
Thanks!

Whatever the issue is with temperature gauges reading high, it seems to be a thing with electric motorcycles. I have owned two Zeros with temperature indicators and both have read about 10 degrees F above the ambient air temperature before starting to ride with the motor cold.  ??? I have heard other Zero owners say the same thing on this forum.

Why are you so worried about what the temperature gauge reads.  if you are worried about freezing, being a few degrees off that low, is not going to help much anyways if you are that cold already.

You also have to remember these sensors are not hanging out in open air just flapping in the breeze.  If there is any sunlight or any light really on the bike, it's going to convert some of that into heat, which will be trapped with the bike until you get the air circulating so it's fresh and the temperatures are back closer to normal.  Just like its hot in your car with the windows rolled up, because of the lack of airflow.

Plastic gets hot in the sun, and can radiate that back out as heat.

With this though, that might be a nice little 'tweak' that Energica could add is an offset menu for the temperature so the user can adjust it up or down, say, 10 degrees or so to make it where they are happy with it.

Honestly should not be too hard at all to implement, just one or two logic blocks really.  Input A thermometer, input B, user offset, add them and output.

Keep in mind there is more than one temperature sensor on the bike and chances are they are all the same model. The temperature sensor that measures ambient air temp that is 8-9 degrees high is likely to be the same model that measures your battery temp and it may also be 8-9 degrees high so the bike thinks your battery is a lot hotter than it really is. As richard mentioned Zero had this problem to. This was at a time when Zero was having problems with their motors overheating and I always wondered if they really just had a bad temp sensor problem, not a motor overheating problem.

Experia is "on the nose" when a 16T front sprocket is fitted.

My 2020 Esse Esse was spot on, as was my 2021 Ribelle. My 2023 Experia now displays 8° too high. So I come to believe it depends on the specific bike you have.
I like the idea of a user adjustable off-set value for the displayed value though…

That is strange, as my experience is the opposite.

I have a hard time buying it changes from one bike to the next of the same year, FW and model, but that would explain part of it. I then would want to know why the differences within the same year and model.

From my (limited) knowledge of thermocouples for temperature measuring I suspect that Energica got a bad batch of sensors they unknowingly put into the bikes.

I asked my dealer if he could change some parameters in the software to make the temperature reading more accurate, but he said he can't.
Title: Re: Just got a 2023 esseesse 9rs
Post by: Specter on April 17, 2023, 07:47:19 PM
I have NOT looked but have an idea they are just using a Thermocouple to measure the temperature, Probably a K type since they are widely available and the easiest to work with, AND don't cost a shit ton like a PMG based one would.

With that being said, TC's do not really go bad, they either work or they don't.  If you get one that is corroding out or something, that won't last very long at all  before it just opens.  It's like saying I have a fuse that is going bad.  Loose connections can cause an issue now, but you'd see that in an erratic display.  If the problems are happening right around 70 degrees, then there's a possibility you plugged the darned thing in backwards, but I doubt they that.  The 'thingamajig' that translates the TC input to human numbers, a possibility that the TC type changed in there?   Maybe a scaling issue in the software when they  upgraded it?

If you can, check the thing at night, when there is no sun shining on your bike, preferrably the bike is in a garage NOT by any heat / cold sources, and you have not ridden it for a while.  Try to get as many things out of the picture that could add / remove heat.  See what it reads.

Another thing, lets say it's mounted right next to your fork or on the motor block or something.  That's a lot of thermal mass.  The sun comes up, the air temp goes up 15 degrees to 20 degrees in an hour.  The bike is not sitting in the sun though so although the air temp is now up, that block of metal is still retaining it's cold from the night, it has NOT fully caught up with the air temp.... Just like your ice cubes don't instantly melt the moment you take them out of the freezer.  The 'zone' around that block of metal is going to be cooler than the ambient air temp as it sucks up that heat, to heat up itself.  the TC is accurate.

Before we go saying the TC's are bad, unless it's an absolutely KNOWN fact, you have to remove all other factors that can affect the temperature, including poor choices of mounting locations.

Ive done I&C for 38 years, been there done that a million times with, BDU, OE, Pebcak type issues  or people just not understanding how things work and immediately saying, OH, it's broke!!!

Certain colors of plastic, like the greys on the bike are HORRIBLE for retaining longwave radiation as well, they will trap the heat in and hold it

You can goto the grocery store and get a digital meat thermometer, some of them even have remote probes. They only cost a few bucks and have multi uses!!  Get yourself one and poke it here and there on the bike and let it wait a few minutes and measure temperatures at different places, in the sun, out of the sun, in the wind, under a fairing etc and see for yourself how wildly they can vary.

My Ribelle is in my garage when I am not on it and yes the ambient temperature is high compared to my KTM, Tesla and other thermometers in my garage. Both the KTM and Tesla are within a degree or two of the outdoor thermometer I have in the garage but the Ribelle averages about 8 degrees higher.

Looks like a thermistor to me...

Cannot speak to the physical location but one can follow #20 wire on VCU connector @ terminal 2E, sensor input.

I have not tore into it to look but,  if they are using TC's because they are cheap to use, then running regular wire back to the 'translator' board can be a problem.  You are setting up a dual junction there and that can cause issues, especially when the temperature is different between measurement and connection location.  Ideally TC's need to be K or Y or R or whatever type you are using, wire all the way back to the actual translation board, NOT plugged in somewhere and a copper wire signal brought back.

Them saying, 20 ga wire there, is kind of vague.  Is it just wire, or is it TC pair?  If it's TC pair then they should state that.

Dammit, now you gonna make me tear the bike apart, like I don't have enough get me in trouble projects brewing already !  :D

Apparently the latest firmware actually corrects the temperature reading but it, uh, has some other inaccuracies.
